The Man who could talk to Bears

Like many stories this one starts once upon a time in another place......

The Man had moved into the mountains to get away from other men, he was sad, upset and disillusioned by all the human things he had seen. As he was traveling about one day he noticed a large male bear that was seemingly in a bad mood seeing as how the bear was the largest and strongest in the forest he felt it wise to stay back and let the bear pass. A few days later the Man ran across another bear except this time the bear was playing and frolicking and having an obviously great time. The months went by and the Man saw these same things over and over so with a little fear and a lot of curiosity he set out to learn the bears speech for it became clear to him that they did speak. For years the Man followed and watched and learned.

Finally one day when he felt that he had learned enough he decided to try it out. This was the day he had been working for but still there was some fear for after all these were bears. finally finding one that was not angry or overly playing he slowly approached. As he got closer he saw that the bear was a bit elderly figuring that this might be the safest he approached "Hello Sir" the Man said in bear. "may I speak with you?" The bear drew back startled and for good reason for never had he been addressed by Man in his own tongue. Quickly composing himself however the bear replied "certainly you may, I enjoy a good conversation. May I suggest we settle down over by the river there under the trees for it is nearly dark and I know Man likes his fire."

So the Man and the Old Bear walked over to the river and as they walked the Bear asked “Whatever possessed you to learn our speech?” the Man replied “I have spent some time now here in the forest” “I know, we have seen you watching us” the bear said. The Man continued “I have watched and noticed the actions of many of your fellow bears and I became curious for the reasons behind their actions.” At this point they paused for they had reached a lovely little place under the trees near the river. The Man set about gathering twigs and wood to build a fire. The Old Bear helped him by knocking down some of the dead limbs and breaking them up. The Man somewhat surprised said “How did you know what kind of wood I need for the fire?” The Bear laughed “I have seen fire, both mans and natures, I know it is the dead dry things that burn the best.” The Man somewhat chagrined simply nodded and started his fire, he kept it small for he did not wish to offend or frighten the Old Bear. While The Man was busy with this the bear wandered off into the woods for a bit. When the fire was going nicely providing good light and heat, the Old Bear returned placing a bundle wrapped up in leaves at the Mans side. “Open it up and lets have something to eat” the Bear grunted as he settle himself close by the fire. The Man did so and found a rabbit and a large amount of berry and apples. The Bear said “Please feel free to cook the rabbit for yourself I have had all the meat for today that I wish.” As the food was cooking the man asked “Do you mind if I ask some questions of you?”The Bear replied “Not at all, if you don't mind me being long winded in my answers for you see now that I have gotten old I love to talk, for nowadays it is what I do best.” The Man grinned “Not at all I am not that old but it is what I do best as well”

“So” the Man said “where do I begin heh I guess at the beginning of course. One of the first bears I noticed was a large male crashing angrily through the forest growling at everything and just plain being mean. What in a bears world could cause such an action, after all you are the lords of the forest few if any others would dare mess with any bear”. The Old Bear looked at him and seemed to smile “that must have been Brogun, for at the time we first saw you he was in a very bad mood. However in order to explain his mood I must tell you something about bears and the easiest way to do this is to tell you one of our stories”. “Please do” The Man replied “for that is exactly what I have been wanting”

The Time of Longing

Long ago when this race of bears was young we found that there was more to life than just eating sleeping and making more bears. So in our simple stoic way we began to explore our emotions, what do we like, how do we feel and what do we want. One bear Breshin, realized that pleasure and joy was increased when shared with another. He taught this to all bears and soon we had paired up and was very very content with our lot. However, there was one fellow Briten, that was unable to find a mate he looked high and low far and wide but to no avail, yes there were single females but all were too young or too old or simply not the right one. Sparks didn't fly the feeling wasn't there. So Briten continued to wander aimlessly in the hopes of finding the love of his life. Years came and went and still no one. This of course, made him sad at first then as more time went by and he saw the happiness in others he grew bitter then angry, shouting out his anger to the world he became maddened nearly to the point of insanity. He drove all of his friends and family away, other bears for miles would hide, until one day several of the leaders got together and decided that something had to be done for this could not keep going on. A group was picked to try and talk to him and if that failed then they would have to ask him to leave forever. They found him later that day raking a large tree and told him that he had to stop or leave he turn and sat then said “I'm sorry I will go I do not know what is wrong with me I am glad for your happiness but the longing just got to me” There was such sadness in his voice that one of the bears simply said “I would be happy to go with you” and with that his need to leave and his time of longing was gone.

“So” The Man said “his anger and bad mood was because of not finding a companion?” “Somewhat” the Old Bear remarked “His bad mood was from lack of love.” The Man just sat there for quite a time and thought then said “For the lack of Love friends were lost, for the want of Love family was lost” The Old Bear did smile this time and said “Just remember though, For the finding of Love a soul was saved”
