beta, opera, 5, mini

Thanks to
Opera Mini 5 Beta my SonyEricsson P1i is now more iPhone than ever, with a soft keyboard, tabbed browsing, mobile speed dial (!!) and a password manager. The new User Interface is simply great, just what I missed when I looked at
Opera Mobile Screenshots! Thank you, Opera, unbelievable what you can do with such a small Java App.

Today Opera Mini 4 final was released. It's a great update, I especially like the introduction of Opera Link. Now it's super easy to have the same bookmarks everywhere. The upgrade of my Opera Mini 3 version went smooth, so I can recommend it to any user. Links for further reading:

I guess you all know already that there's a new Beta of Opera Mini 4 available but just in case anybody missed it,
get it from here. Oh and it's free (as have all Opera Mini versions been)! Opera Mini is a fantastic browser to access the full web from any phone that has a J2ME Java runtime environment, so basically every phone including yours

I'm happy to report that the update went super smooth on my K800i.
The new functions include one feature that I always wanted to see: Landscape mode. While I also love the new desktop view because the zooming is a real eye catcher my preferred set-up currently is: Landscape view with fit to width and medium size font. Being able to add just about any web search is great, it makes the browsing experience even more desktop-alike.
When you use Opera Mini you have to remind yourself from time to time that you're using a tiny device only. Oh and don't forget to make sure your contract includes an affordable data plan! Have fun surfing with the new Beta and thank you to Opera for giving us one more exceptional product to improve our web experience on any device.

Today Opera released the first Beta of
Opera Mini 4.0 Dimension. I am really impressed by
all the new features and speed. Unbelievable that it can show full pages and offers a mouse pointer and dynamic zooming in a 91 KB Java package for my handset! Feels like I now have my beloved
Wii Internet Channel in my pocket. Made me think about
a better codename: Opera Mii-ni 4.0 Beta "Meistersurfer".
Get it while it's hot!

Opera Software just released
Opera Mini 3.0 (see also
the press release and the
Opera Mini Blog entry). Since it's a final it replaces Opera Mini 2.0 upon install. It has great new features like feeds, photo blogging (I'll surely test that one again here soon), content folding, secure connections (!) and faster page loading in addition to all the great functionality version 2 already had. The upgrade of my version 2 went smooth, all personal data was kept and the new functions were added. Great experience, great update!

The
Opera Mini 3.0 beta sports an excellent feed reader. This one makes it easier than ever to keep up-to-date with what happens on your favourite sites. Here's a pic of my current subscriptions.

I have the feeling that the transcoder servers fetch new messages even when the phone is offline, thus you won't miss a single news on heavy traffic servers. So what do you feed your phone with?
Not so funny: On Saturday we played cards all day, Doppelkopf, which I really like. However not even some beer-dope helped me, I lost badly
I hope I'll do better this weekend when there'll be a more official cards competition ...

...

On Monday the SonyEricsson K800i that I won arrived. Since I was still in bed when the postman arrived and my wife was off to do some shopping he decided that my elder daughter (7 years) was old enough to sign for the package. I guess this is usually not ok but that time I really liked it otherwise I would've had to wait much longer to grab it since we celebrated the German reunification yesterday.
I started unpacking it and setting everything up right after I stood up. All I can say is that the phone is absolutely great. Not as small as mobile phones usually are today but small enough. I wanted it because it has such a big screen and the cyber-shot camera. I used my K750i to take pictures all the time since I use them as a visual diary in iPhoto and on a family website. The K800 will do a much better job, the first pics showed some great quality. The only thing that I'll miss is the electric torch that the K750i had. However the real flash that the new one has makes it possible to take real pics at night.
Of course
I installed Opera mini on the phone as soon as I had set-up the Internet connection. Surfing on the big screen is even bigger fun -- however a horizontal surfing mode would be nice, especially if it could make use of the additional buttons that the K800i has. Of course Opera Mini does a much better job than the built-in netfront browser

I also have the 512 MB memory card installed that I ordered when Opera confirmed that my choice was valid, it seems it's impossible to get the 1 GB version in Germany right now. Since the phone is playing nicely with the Mac I now have some music and pictures on it and some extra space for new pics. Now all I need to do is to tweak iSync to make it recognize the phone model and then find out if there is a possibility to teach a Norwegian phone to talk German -- especially needed when SMSing. Perhaps the next Firmware Over The Air will be German, I really hope that the phone will tell the update server that it runs on a German SIM card.
Thank you once more, Opera

blog, thank, you, opera
...
This is my first public blog entry ever -- and the first in English aswell. Usually I don't want to bore people with what happens in a tiny village in the German countryside. However I really feel that I want to say thank you to Opera out of several reasons and this seemed to be the natural way.

I'm an Opera fanatic since 2000 when Opera 4 came with an internal mail client. I joined the community in 2002 I think. Since 2004 I use Opera extensively on my Mac at home and for about a year I also use Opera mini heavily on my mobile phone. I really am addicted to all this. However what do I get for all the fun? I not only get help and fun in this community I also
won a prize and was chosen as the
member of the week, yay.
Therefore I'd like to say thank you to Opera. Thank you for giving me the best Internet experience
with your products, thank you for giving me
the best community experience and thank you for
the K800i that I was allowed to choose and that should be on its way now. Btw, my wife will get the K750i that I currently use and my sister will get the K700i that my wife currently uses. So you made a whole family happy.
All this might sound a bit pathetic but I really felt I had to say it here. You even made me start a blog of my own to have a possibility to really say thank you to the community. Don't expect too many posts here but I hope I'll find the courage to post some more from time to time.
