Writing is the language of ideas and the spirit

I’m working with award winning Georgian writer Mikho Mosulishvili. This is an interesting and an amazing experience as we are working with roughly translated text which was originally written in Georgian. I am then editing the work then going back to him to check that I’ve understood what he is trying to say. The reason we are engaged in this collaborative exercise is that I really enjoy his use of language.

For example here is part of one of his ‘miniatures’ below.

This is the first one that caught my eye and is just on 220 words long:



Lady with Poppies

A twenty-year-old girl with an excited appearance is walking in the room which is lit in a very low light of the lamp light. The nervous paintings on the walls and the sound of rain coming in from the street create a specific feeling of comfort. The girl is a painter. She is trying to take her eyes off the guest – a writer, and thinks that taking too many drugs overdosing is the best way of suicide. “One will leave this world without pain,” she says.

I loved this prose and as we continue to work on putting these stories together I become excited by the insights I gain. It is also something I have never done before and would never have dared attempt once. But Mikho is patient and explains what he is trying to say. I believe we are working on a unique piece of writing that will add a unique and wonderful dimension to The Story Mint’s collection of publications.



His work reminds of the Russian writers I have studied and loved and of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, which was translated by Fitzgerald. All tese novels are translations and I have often wondered what we miss when a piece of writing is taken from one language to another.



I hope that as Mikho and I work together we capture Mikho’s intention and the spirit of his writing. That is certainly my aim.





By the way, these blogs are now public. I could see no advantage in continuing to keep them private now that we are getting so close to launching The Story Mint.

In 1986 He has graduated from Tbilisi state university (TSU), geological-geographical faculty on a speciality of the engineer-geologist (Specialization: geological shootings, searches and investigation of mineral deposits). And also 1981-1984 He studied as secondary faculty on a speciality Scriptwriting (creative masterful Erlom Ahvlediani and Davit Agiashvili). He has been working at editor and playwright. Mikho Mosulishvili has published books of stories and of novels which are translated into several languages. Since 1998 Mikho Mosulishvili is honored to be the Cavalier of “Honor” Medal. “Honor” Medals are awarded to Georgian citizens who actively participated in the revival of Georgia and devoted themselves to noble deeds. And as Mikho Mosulishvili thinks: "The word has begun all and the word will finish all in this world..."

Review by Nino Kajaia of the novel-menippeah ‘The Knight of All Times’ (Tbilisi, Bestseller Publishing, 1999) by Mikho Mosulishvili


On December 28, 1998 “The Knight at All Times” - action novel-menippeah by Mikho Mosulishvili was awarded with first prize of the literary competition of Tbilisi City Hall, Management of Youth Affairs and the Union of Bookfans “Bestseller”.

This extensive work (approximately 95 700 words) reflects spiritual state of Georgia during the last two centuries (1801-1993), and it’s read with inextinguishable interest. The author together with the protagonist of the novel, Vache Andronikashvili is looking for The Knight at All Times, and the reader also is looking for him.

The genre of the novel as identified by the author as menippeah. Menippeah is a variant spelling of Menippea, referencing the Menippean satire in classical literature and in the literary theories of scholars including Mikhail Bakhtin and Northrop Frye. These scholars mentioned it as the generalization of the Antic genre Menippean satire.

Menippean satire or Varon’s satire is the genre of Antic Literature and is characterized by the confluence of philosophical discussions and parody satire, and regard to the form, it is characterized by free fusion of prose and poetry. The nomination is associated with the famous philosopher and satirist of the III century BC Menippus of the Gadara.

According to literary critics, the difference between menippeah and menippean satire is that menippeah covers the literary events of different ages – short stories of the Renaissance, satire and philosophical stories of the Middle Ages. The satire of Antic novels is expanded in the novels of Francois Rabelais and Jonathan Swift, and menippean elements are found in the literature of the XX century (Thomas Mann, James Joyce, Mikhail Bulgakov, Thomas Pynchon and others).

The novel ‘The Knight at All times’ is a mixture of eccentric and scandalous events that ends with Carnival - one of the main character of menippeah - which brought together the living and the dead.

Novel time - background covers Georgia's spiritual adventure in XIX-XX centuries. This a small country aspiration for independence from the Russian Empire; or this is the adventure of a family, the story of Andronikashvili’s seven generations from Russian Empire's annexation (1801) until Abkhaziane war (1993).

The author's narrative is based on approved historical references and sources, and it follows the testimony of chronicles. So the reader has a convincing feeling of real events. Not only the historical and fictional characters, but the gravestones have spoken and we see the scenes of the heroic past lively.

The novel is built on cinematographic principle of the parallel narrative: it describes the persecution and destruction of members of the secret organization “Giorgi” in 1983 by State Security Committee (KGB) officers; on the other hand, there are tragicomic or dramatic episodes of seven ancestors of Papua Andronikashvili, and we see what happened to this noble Georgian family after Russian Empire invasion (1801) in Georgia.

Local or worldwide memorable stories are described by the skilled writer, who feels perfectly nuances and their capacities. Good example of above is the passage with terrible story of beheading of the priest Zirak, Gija and Datia. Unmerciful attorney of KGB enjoys the spectacle: he forces his subordinates to roll the heads downhill to see which one is faster and to amuse himself. Mihko Mosulishvili acknowledges, that this is the real story – the same terrible fact took place in the village Arashenda, when the Bolsheviks conquered Georgia for second time in 1921, and it happened to the ancestors of the author...

The depressed hero of Abhkazian war (1992-1993) Papua Andronikashvili decides to commit suicide and the imaginary, strange guest – archimandrite Iostos Andronikashvili prevents him. Cleric brings his descendant the book, written by himself – “The Chest of Mystery” and tells him the ancestors’ order – to postpone the suicide until he finds The Knight at All Times.

From this moment the novel continues in two dimensions: on the one hand further developments can be considered as an image of objective reality, and on the other as the shifts in Papua Andronikashvili’s soul. He is the only man, who stayed alive in the novel – and the protagonist is visited by already dead ancestors and their contemporaries.

The Chest of Mystery, created by sinful hand of archimandrite Iostos is binded organically in the plot of the novel. The patrimonial chronicles of Shishioni, or Andronikashvili are told in different languages. According to the book, the eternal existing is ordered by god on the generation of shishions with green eyes and the book tells that the age of domination of the Scythians is to be ended by seven generations of Shishions (Scythians were called the Russian invaders in Georgia).

In 1983 the secret organization “Giorgi” and the members of this organization set a goal of freeing their homeland from the rule of Russia through the peaceful disobedience. Their conspirative activities – editing of the journal “Amirani”, preparation for spreading leaflets and the secret meetings did not escape from the watchful eye of KGB, based on distrust and seeking the victims. The loyal officials of expansionist policy of the orthodox Russia value the personal benefit and career more than the independence of the insulted country, so they guard and pursue the young people, who dream of freedom of their homeland, the KGB officers plan their arrest and enjoy the results of their gendarmes activities in advance. Immoral and greedy Russian doesn’t disdain anything, struggling explicitly or implicitly against the people who seek the ways to freedom.

In the vision of dying Vache, who climbed on the eaves of the abandoned church and was shoot by KGB snipers seven descendants of great and incomparable warrior Mahkaz Andronikashvili merged into a single entity and fought the biblical dragon...

Only after viewing the enchanting and fantastic carnival (where the Russian writers Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Leo Tolstoy demand from Georgia to liberate Russia from colonial oppression (we are dealing with a situation typical of the carnival, when the opposite is true), the reader finds himself the main character of the novel – yes, in the novel the reader is The Knight at All Times, who has to fight the biblical dragon – or to try to overcome the evil in his own soul and if he can’t win, at least to weaken it. This is the most important idea of the novel.

"GALA" Literary Awards celebrates its 5th birthday. The awards ceremony, opened by the founder of "GALA" ─ Zaal Samadashvili, took place in National Museum's yard.

"At its 5th birthday "GALA" presents a new, additional nomination called "Scenario of the Year". Only 60 books participated in our contest 5 years ago, whereas this year, the jury had to choose best works from 140 books. For my turn, I especially support authors of children's books. Literary contest is one of best ways to popularize reading. I am sure that 18 books nominated for the award will have lots of readers," declared Zaal Samadashvili.

"GALA" Literary Awards was founded upon the initiative of Tbilisi City Assembly Chairman. In the contest participate authors that have published books and scenarios during last year. The event is aimed at supporting literary men and script writers.

"GALA" competent jury elected 7 best works from 20 ones nominated for the contest. Each nominee winner received GEL 4000 prize and small copies of bronze age Kolkh axe (symbol of the contest).

The best "Scenario of Year" award went to script "Ada's Film" by student Maka Kukulava. She received the prize from the hands of Minister of Culture of Georgia ─ Nikoloz Rurua."

"Gala" is an extremely important event for development of modern Georgian literature" said minister Rurua.

"Let me thank the jury, Cinema Centre and my friends. I've created this work for my dear friends. I frequently say that my scenario is about teenagers that have freedom but in fact they do not enjoy it. The final stage of the film may reflect mere illusions. If so, let it simply be a film and viva cinema!" said Maka Kukulava.

The best "Translated Book" award went to the translation of Humberto Ecco's book"Rose Name" preformed by Khatuna Tskhadadze. The best "Illustration" award went to Loreta Abashidze-Shengelia.The best "Children's Book" award went to Natalia Davitashvili's book "In the Clouds and above them".

The best "Project of the Year" award went to Zaza Abzianidze's " 100 books ─ People that Changed the World". The best "Book of the Year" award went to Mariam Tsiklauri's poems' book "White Cows".The best "Hand Book the Year" went to Mikho Mosulishvili's "Vazha-Phavela".

The author received the prize from the hands of Tbilisi Mayor Gigi Ugulava. "If we review the past years of "GALA" we shall clearly see that the project does not stop searching for new faces. Hereby, I can bravely underline that this contest differs from all other of the same type. Each year "Gala" appears with a new interface," stated Gigi Ugulava.

"This prize makes me happy and loose my head," said Mikho Mosulishvili.

5 member jury formed by: translator Nino Kajaia, artist Dimitri Eristavi, writer Zurab Samadashvili, writer Mamuka Kherkheulidze and National Cinema Centre Director Nino Kukhalashvili, worked on revealing the winners from the list of books presented by publishing houses.

"This year, significantly good books formed the shortlists. Thus, it was truly difficult to make choices," said Nino Kajaia.

"In general, being jury member is a thankless job, as the winners usually consider themselves very gifted and think that the jury has rendered no service to them. And vice versa: the ones that loose, want to kill the jury. For us, it was truly difficult to choose best works from presented 138 ones. This year, much more authors were interested in participation," stated Mamuka Kherkheulidze.

"41 scenarios were presented to the contest held by National Cinema Centre. Our internal commission chose 7 best ones. From them, "GALA" jury named 3 nominees. Each of them is a high quality work. If producers show interest in them, we shall receive great films," said Nino Kukhalashvili.
The literary contest was broadcasted live by Tele Company "Imedi".

Մեկ անգամ այսպես խոսեց ինձ հետ բավականին գինովցած, արդեն միջահասակից անց, և եթե նրա մտերիմները չեն նեղանա, իսկապես որ էշի պես խոնջացած, աստվածատուր տաղանդի տեր նկարիչը, որ ավանակների կենացը խմելուց հետո դիմեց ինձ. «Մի՞թե դու չէիր ուզենա ինձ նման լինել մեկն այն էշերից, որոնք պիտի հանդիպեն Ֆրանսիս Ժամին»:
Պատրվակելով իմ ծուլությունը՝ բացասական պատասխան տվեցի, թե չէ քիչ էր մնում ինձ էլ էշ դարձնի...
Խեղճը լյարդի ախտահարումից վախճանվեց...



ՎԻՊԱԿԸ

-... Նա մեծ է, շատ մեծ: Նրա մասշտաբային պերսոնաժները համարյա թե դղրդացնում են աշխարհը...,- ասաց, խորասուզվեց մտքերի մեջ և փոքր-ինչ լռելուց հետո բացականչեց,- թե չէ մարդը այդչափ մեծ չէ:
-Իսկ դո՞ւք:
-Ես փոքր եմ, հոգնած, ձեռնափայտին հենվելով՝ նստում եմ այս զառամյալ կաղնու տակ և նայում ոչ թե դեպի երկինք, այլ ցած՝ հետամուտ մրջյուններին, որ իրենց չափակշռից շատ ավելի ծանր բեռ են կրում...
Լռեց, հավանաբար, արձագանքիս էր սպասում:
-Չեմ ուզում «նա» լինել. ինձ մրջյունի տեղ դրեք:
Ժպտաց միայն իրեն հատուկ ժպիտով ներողամիտ, բայց տրտմուրախ, և կոշտուկավոր ձեռքը դրեց գլխիս:
Հետո ձեռնափայտին հենվելով՝ ծանրորեն վեր կացավ: Ծանրորեն վեր կացավ ու այդպես էլ հեռացավ:
Գնանք, գնանք ու... աներևութացավ:
Փառահեղ մարդ էր: «Գրում եմ երանությամբ,- ասում էր,- որպես թե հոգուս աղոթք է անհրաժեշտ»:
Նրա պարզությունը թող ձեզ չանհանգստացնի, «Սայլուղու գրող» չհորջորջեք, նրա «Սայլուղին» բովանդակ Վրաստանը կտեղավորի իր մեջ: Այսուհանդերձ, ինչպես Նիկո Փիրոսմանիի պարագայում էր, դեռ Եվրոպան պիտի ճանաչի, հետո միայն ուսերս ցնցենք ու սկսենք կոկորդիլոսի արցունքներ թափել:


ԲԱՇԱՐՁԱԿ ԵՐԿՆԱՅԻՆ ԱՌՅՈՒԾԸ

Սկզբից այնպես է երևում, իբր թե ձևազուրկ ինչ-որ բան է փայլածում: Գործում է կուրացնելու չափ, աչքերդ լցնում արտասուքով: Եթե դիմանաս ու չփակես, քիչ անց կնկատես կլոր, շիկավառ մի մարմին, որից շուրջանակի ճառագայթներ են դուրս գալիս, ինչպես նաև սկավառակ... Այլևս չես դիմանում. արցունքակալ աչքերդ ինքնին քողարկվում են կոպերով, թեև, առմիշտ քեզ հետ է մնում լուսավորող տեսքը նրա՝ մարմին, լույս և սկավառակ՝ երրորդություն...

ՆՈՒՅՆ ԶԳԱՑՈՂՈՒԹՅՈՒՆԸ

Մայրը եղինջով դաղում էր ոտքերը: Ցավում էին: Սառը ջրով լվաց և դստերը՝ տիկնիկի նման երկարաթարթիչ ու քնքշահայաց աղջկան, ասաց.
-Ոնց որ թե անձրև գա ոտքերիդ:
Անցան տարիներ:
Այդ գեղաչյա աղջնակը փայլատ, աղոտահայաց կին է արդեն: Վաղուց չկա մայրը: Այժմ էլ ինքն է ոտքերը դաղում եղինջով: Մոր արցունքոտ աչքերը տեսնելով՝ տիկնիկի նման երկարաթարթիչ ու մոշակն դուստրը հարցրեց.
-Ոտքերդ շա՞տ են ցավում, մայրիկ:
-Ոնց որ թե անձրև գա ոտքերիդ, աղջիկս:

Մայրս ու հայրս ինձ կատու նվիրեցին, մռռալու փոխարեն տկտկում էր, մլավելու փոխարեն՝ զնգզնգում: Կենդանի ժամացույց էր... Թևեր չուներ, բայց ագռավի պես թևածում էր շուրջս, երբեմն էլ երկնքից խոյընթաց սահում էր ցած և երեսս ճանկռտում, կամ էլ արյունս էր ոթում ու կաթի նման լակում: Այս ամենը զգում էի, նկատում, կատաղում, ատրճանակ հանում...
Կրակելիս դառնում էր ավտոմատ, նշանառում էի զնգզնգացող շնչավորին... Բայց և այնպես չէի սպանում, որովհետև այդ պահին էլ ժամացույցի զանգի պես զնգզնգում էր: «Լիմոնկան» հանեցի ու պահպանակը ձգելով՝ նետեցի, ամբողջովին մաս-մաս եղավ:
Ամաչեցի, քանզի չգնահատեցի ծնողներիս նվերը, աչքերս փակեցի ու այդպես մեռա. զարհուրելի է բացաչք մեռյալը...
Հանկարծ ամեն ինչ այլագունեց, ու ես ինքս կատվի փոխարկվեցի: Ինչ-որ մեկի ծնողներն ինձ նվիրեցին այդ ինչ-որ մեկին: Մռռալու փոխարեն տկտկում էի, մլավելու փոխարեն՝ զնգզնգում. դարձա կենդանի ժամացույց...
Այսպիսի երազներ եմ տեսնում Սուխումի անկումից հետո...»:

The wood-goblin

The radio play tells the story of crazy countrymen who saw off the hands to the hermit, the man who is of course unlike them – “The Wood-goblin”.

They have committed this repulsive crime and then tell the story, as they would like it to be; of course they then try to justify their action.

It is incomprehensible whether it is recollection or deposition or confesses… So, the tragedy, which happened in the abandoned village Archanda, is painted by the monologues of seven personages.

The death of Guaram Mampali

(1989, director Badri Mikashavidze)

This radio play is dedicated to the memory of Irakli UchaneiSvili. It can be said that the role played by this artist in the radio play is one of his best roles.

Anyway, the author thinks, that Irakli Uchaneishvili’s play was so refined and charged with emotions that author saw his character more prominently.

The radio play concerns a difficult period in the history of Georgia. At that time this small country was between Arabia and Byzantium and was a subject of their direct or secret aggression. The hero of the play – Guaram Mampali, a real orthodox Christian, Firmness Based on his faith, is a representative of Bagrationi’s royal family and the King’s brother. This hero stands out against a background of such characters that use any means to reach the King’s throne. In their struggle for material welfare they didn’t disdain to use any means: they carry on intrigues, can shoot the bow from the back, can use the poison, and can use an enemy for fratricidal wars.

Guaram Mampali took the monastic vows. Satan visits him and conducts him a trial. At the beginning Satan struggles secretly and then directly, by can’t subdues Guaram spiritually and dumps him into an abyss. But the monk from Bagrationi’s family will join the suite of Divine angels.
