In some parts of Georgia

In Georgia we have our equivalent of Santa Claus, though we call him Snow Grandfather, and he has the same function- to give presents to children from a big sack he carries on his shoulder. But New Year traditions differ from country to country and from region to region.
Khevsureti- (it is one of the regions of Georgia)
Khevsurians make special preparations to celebrate New Year. The woman of the house usually makes one big cake for the mekvle-the first person to enter the house on New Year's day. The cake has the figures of a cross, a man, a bull, a cow, a horse and an ear of wheat. When the cake is baked, everybody comes to see which of the figures has risen most. Khevsurians believe that the most visible figure on the cake shows what the family will have plenty of in the coming year. Then the woman of the house bakes separate cakes for the whole family and the person whose cake bakes first is believed to be the luckiest.
Pshavi
The mekvle brings luck and happiness to the family. So when this person comes in, the woman of the house meets him and offers him food and drink and he proposes a toast to the New Year. Pshavians believe that what they do, and the way they behave on the first day of the New year, will decide how they behave for the rest of the year. For this reason they try to be kind and generous on this important day.

The difficulties of a foreign language

smile idea cool There are numerous anecdotes about the difficulties of people travelling in foreign countries without a knowledge of the language of that country. Here's the story of a Frenchman travelling in the United States who, while eating in a restaurant, wished to order some mushrooms. Unable to make himself understood, he asked for a pencil and paper and carefully drew a picture of a mushroom. His drawing, however, was not too good, for the puzzled waiter returned in about ten minutes, not with an order of mushrooms, but with a large man's umbrella.smile sad
Another similar story concerns two Americans travelling in Spain. They were both unable to speak a word of Spanish and one day, while eating in a restaurant in a small village, they were having considerable difficulty in explaining to the waiter what they wanted. One of them wanted a glass of milk. The waiter seemed unable to understand. Finally, on the back of the menu the man drew a picture of a cow. The poor waiter, however, still seemed puzzled. Finally he left and was gone from the restaurant for half an hour or so. He returned very pleased with himself. There were two tickets for a bullfight in his hand.bigsmile happy
