Customize the number of items in speed dial

Remco discovered a nice hidden feature in Kestrel that many people have been waiting for since the introduction of speed dial about a year ago:
You can edit the number of items shown in speed dial!

To do that browse to your "profile" directory (see "Help > About Opera" for its location), open "speeddial.ini" in a text edit (e.g. Notepad) and append the following lines:
[Size]
Rows=4
Columns=5

Don't use too large numbers though or Opera will use all your CPU for quite some time.

Thanks Opera developers for implementing this very popular request and Remco for finding it!

Opera Mini - in 1280*1024!OMG, I'm on the frontpage!

Does it sync with Opera Link and affect Opera Mini?

didn't test but wouldn't think so, the server prolly accepts 9 items only

MartinezZ 11. May 2008, 19:23

Not, it doesn't for the present.

TheAtilla 12. May 2008, 22:36

The server has no limits, but they're not synced nevertheless.

NoteMe 13. May 2008, 04:48

Thanks everyone, I'll put it on my wish list for the Mini and Desktop team then

this isn't an officially supported feature so I doubt this wish will come true

Hello,excuse my off-topic comment.
My name is kyoya,an opera user in Japan.

I like your 'IE6XP' skin very much, and modified a little, mainly around the pagebar, toolbar, mail header icon, added icons in the popup menu, and so on.
Would you mind if I upload this skin?

I couldn't find any other way to concact with you,so I posted this comment here.Sorry for my poor English.

I can't find speeddial.ini for Opera 9.5 beta on Windows Vista :frown:

Edit: Found and works okay :D

TheAtilla 10. June 2008, 22:04

In case I hadn't mentioned it - the items were, in fact, synced, just not used when received. It seems like it's working in the latest snapshot. But don't take my word for it, try it out for yourselves.

Also - I've no clue how many bad things could happen if the settings on synced machines are different. It's not something that is considered "supported".

Thank's for the warning. So, folks, remember you are testing/using this on your own risk!

Like I said in my previous post, I managed to get it work with Opera 9.5 on Windows Vista. I just had to make hidden files and folders displayed on Vista to find that speeddial.ini file.

And the answer to those who still wonder what will happen if you sync Opera 9.5 and Opera Mini via Opera Link: Only first 9 speeddials will be displayed on Opera Mini (and at http://link.opera.com/ ). This is very nice because now I can have speeddials on Opera 9.5 that are not needed on Opera Mini.

As soon as Opera 9.5 (final) become released, I will install it on my PC at work and take a risk to test what will happen if I have more than 9 speeddials on two PCs sychronized via Opera Link. In my case it would be nice to have a few different speeddials at work than at home.

WARNING!

I added 4x3 grid at first, which does not seem to have any effect, but when I took the extra speeddials from 10 to 12 into use, the problems started. Opera Mini throw me out from Opera Link and I could not synchronize again till I understood to remove those extra speeddials from Opera 9.5 beta.

In other words, Opera Link does not allow Opera Mini to synchronize if Opera 9.5 beta synchronizes more than 9 speeddials. Those extra speeddials are not displayed on Opera Link, but they still are there and mess the things.

Moreover I have noticed that changing the order of speeddials by dragging them around on Opera 9.5 does not fully work. Some speeddials just start to behave oddly by switching themselves back to some old bookmarks.

I only tested this in Opera 9.5 beta, so I do not know yet how it is with Opera 9.5 final.

Today I noticed there are additinal setting when you log-in Opera Link on Opera 9.5. Thanks to that it's possible to keep desktop speeddials separated from Opera Link and avoid messing your Opera Mini speeddials

Nice, I never knew about this, thanks for sharing, and congratulations

Hi I was thrilled to find out tht it's possible to customize speeddial. It seems to work for others. But when I opened the speeddial.ini, there was no line as mentioned for me to change. All I have is as below:

Opera Preferences version 2.1
; Do not edit this file while Opera is running
; This file is stored in UTF-8 encoding

[Speed Dial 1]
Title=
Url=
Reload Enabled=0
Reload Interval=0
Reload Only If Expired=0

[Speed Dial 2]
Title=
Url=
Reload Enabled=0
Reload Interval=0
Reload Only If Expired=0

.
.
.
.
.

[Speed Dial 9]
Title=
Url=
Reload Enabled=0
Reload Interval=0
Reload Only If Expired=0

Is it because m using Opera 9.6 Beta? Win XP?
Hope u can help. Thanks in advance!

larskl 6. October 2008, 10:20

to quote my post: open "speeddial.ini" in a text edit (e.g. Notepad) and append the following lines:

danaleks 24. July 2009, 18:00

For the record: in Opera 10 (introduced in Beta 1); you can click ‘Configure Speed Dial’ and choose between 2×2 and 5×5, and set a background picture.

No need to edit configuration files manually anymore!

ste-ven 3. September 2009, 04:02

i never understood what speed dial is good for, though on
Safari it is one even more sophisticated than in Opera
It looks good but it could miss....totally
well, just an opinion
