The incoherent ramblings of a Disgruntled-But-Hopeful, American Dissident

STICKY POST

Allow me to introduce myself . . .

Hi! I'm a 54 year old, mature (not old) professional, polyamorous, gay, white guy living in San Francisco, who is finding himself deeply in, um, like. :D I am a truly fascinating person as the entries below will attest. If you have a comment about anything, I'd love to hear from you.

Daily Dose of Irony

I pulled this quote off the web from a news report on the slowness of the government in Myanmar to accept aid following the cyclone:

***********

"We're outraged by the slowness of the response of the government of Burma (Myanmar) to welcome and accept assistance," U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad told reporters. "It's clear that the government's ability to deal with the situation, which is catastrophic, is limited."

***********

HEL-LOOO! Can anyone spell K-A-T-R-I-N-A??

Today's ICK Factor (Shudder)

No, it's not political and has nothing to do with Pres. Shrub.

It's CAMI.

Yesterday we went for our walk in the park. We have lots of gophers (little mole-like creatures who burrow underground). When it rains some of the little buggers drown and float out of their burrows.

Seems that Cami has an affinity for the lil dead creatures. Has a way of sniffing them out, then parades around with it hanging out of her mouth, and unless I can sneak up on her, she'll eat it--or parts of it. ICK :yikes: But it gets worse . . .

Yesterday she found one and ate it before I could sneak up on her to get it away from her. (Ok, I hear all the dog lovers. We're working on "off" and "drop it.") The lil bugger din't agree with her tummy, so after eating a biiig dinner, she upchucked it all, including the creature pieces -- outside, thankfully. :yuck:

This morning, apparently feeling better, and having totally forgotten that the critter had upset her tummy the evening before, I found her gnawing on the pieces she'd upchucked the night before, which she was trying to bring into the house to hide. :yikes: :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: :faint:

Sooo gross having to pick up the pieces and dispose of them. Needless to say she's not getting anywhere near my face for a few days.

Why Didn't Someone Find this, like 8 years ago??

Below is a quote from the REAGAN DIARIES about George "W", recently edited by author Doug Brinkley and published by Harper Collins.

"A moment I've been dreading. George brought his n'er-do-well son around this morning and asked me to find the kid a job. Not the political one who lives in Florida; the one who hangs around here all the time looking shiftless. This so-called kid is already almost 40 and has never had a real job. Maybe I'll call Kinsley over at The New Republic and see if they'll hire him as a contributing editor or something. That looks like easy work."

Jobs I wouldn't do . . .

If that weren't enough, a guy from your own team is throwing a hardball at your face at 90+ miles per hour. No thanks. :insane:

Cami's New Pic

On the Obama Bandwagon

It was a no-brainer once Edwards dropped out of the race on the eve of Super Tuesday. It's pretty amazing how democrats across the country seem to be supporting his campaign. The prospect of a black US president is pretty cool. Should he win, I hope he has the wisdom to surround himself with experienced advisors--people who will tell him when he's wrong, to whom he will listen (unlike another president I can think of).

Life is bopping along here. LP's taken control of the "garden" and has been making significant inroads hacking out the detrius. Pretty soon it'll be full of flowers and other bloomy things which will hopefully attract butterflies and humming birds.

Tomorrow is Valentine's Day. He'll be in class until about 10 pm, so I think I'll just surprise him with a late snack--pate and crackers and a little caviar on smoked salmon with some nice bubbly.

Cami is growing like a weed. Sometimes I swear that she's 5 pounds heaver in the morning than she was the night before. We've had to buy her a larger collar as she's outgrown the original one. She's now 7 months and counting. She's picking up on commands, is almost completely housebroken, is steadily increasing her vocabulary.

Today she invented a new game. She dug one of her stuffed toys that sorta looks like a squirrel, out of her toy box. She took it outside and dropped it into one of the holes she'd dug in the back yard. Then she just seriously attacked it, flinging it around, shaking it, tossing it across the yard, then pouncing on it and growling. I'd not seen such a display. Pretty funny to watch. Make ya wonder what's going on in their brains.

Gosh . . . I was just looking for a pic to attach to this post and discovered that I hadn't taken ANY pics of her since the end of last year!! OH MY!! Must rectify immediately! Here, poochie, poochie . . .

California Highway Patrol squares off with The Marine Corps

A friend sent me this news snippitt and it was too good not to pass along . . .

*********************

Two California Highway Patrol Officers were conducting speeding enforcement on Interstate 5 near MCAS Miramar. One of the officers was using a hand held radar device to check speeding vehicles approaching near the crest of a hill. The officers were suddenly surprised when the radar gun began reading 300 miles per hour. The officer attempted to reset the radar gun, but it would not
reset and turned itself off. Just then a deafening roar over the treetops revealed that the radar had in fact locked onto a USMC F/A-18 Hornet Fighter plane which was engaged in a low flying exercise near the location.

Back at the CHP Headquarters the Patrol Captain fired off a complaint to the USMC Base Commander.

Back came a reply in true USMC style: ( I Loved this one...)

" Thank you for the message, which allows us to complete the file on this incident. You may be interested to know that the tactical computer in the Hornet had detected the presence of, and subsequently locked onto your hostile radar equipment and automatically sent a jamming signal back to it. Furthermore,an air to ground missile aboard the fully armed aircraft had also
automatically locked onto your equipment. Fortunately the Marine Pilot flying the Hornet recognized the situation for what it was, quickly responded to the missile system alert status and was able to override the automated defense system before the missile was launched and your hostile radar was destroyed. Thank you for your concern."

Wonder if the CHP Captain ever told his troops how close they came to being blown up....

Tying the Knot (Loosely)

LP celebrated a year of togetherness this past December 15 during a whirlwind of holiday parties, including our own New Year's Eve party where we had about 60 guests! The last person left around 3:30 a.m. Well, not exactly, one slept over on the couch and left the next morning . . .

Cami was great. People couldn't believe how well-mannered she was. (She can be when she wants to be.)

LP has begun the process of moving in. We've started re-arranging the house, organizing, weeding out non-essentials and bringing in some of his stuff. We're hoping to have the clean up and organizing process completed in time for Chinese New Year.

After New Year's we got to talking and before we knew it, ended up down at City Hall registering as domestic partners! Still hasn't completely sunk in, but there are no regrets whatsoever.

We're finally getting a small break from all the rain. There were a couple of days when I thought the wind was literally going to rip my lemon and orange trees out of the ground. In the park where we walk two 150' tall trees were literally blown over. That's not taking into count all the broken limbs and eucalyptus trees that had been stripped of their bark . . .

Hope you all are having a treemendous New Year so far!

Hugs,
Larry

The GW Bush Presidential Library . . .

from a friend . . .

Subject: The Bush Library There's a show on C-SPAN about presidential libraries. Here're what the draft plans for the George W. Bush Library now call for:

The Alberto Gonzales Room - Where you can't remember any of the exhibits.

The Hurricane Katrina Room - It's still under construction.

The Texas Air National Guard Room - Where you don't have to even show up.

The Walter Reed Hospital Room - Where they don't let you in.

The Guantanamo Bay Room - Where they don't let you out.

The Weapons of Mass Destruction Room - Nobody has been able to find it.

The War in Iraq Room - After you complete your first tour, they can force you to go back for your second and third and fourth and fifth tours.

The K-Street Project Gift Shop - Where you can buy an election, or, if no one cares, steal one.

The Men's Room - Where you could meet a Republican Senator (or two).

To be fair, the President has done some good things, and so the museum will have an electron microscope to help you locate them.

When asked, President Bush said that he didn't care so much about the individual exhibits as long as his museum was better than his father's.

<sigh>

Happy Holidays to All!

Sorta glad this year is over. As I get older, I understand more and more why people celebrate the new year. When I was younger, I never much liked the holiday. It's kinda stupid, really, when you think about it. As you get older, you should covet your time, cling to every second, as one's seconds on this earth grow fewer, and fewer rather than celebrating their passing . . .

Even so, there have been things to celebrate over the year. I met LP juuust over a year ago. In actuality, we've been together since the day we met. This year, he'll move in--when his lease expires in June. He's already moving some stuff in, so I guess for the next 6 months we'll be merging households. (Somehow, I thinkI'd rather do it in a weekend. lol) We threw our first dinner party last night and had a great time. After the guests left, we sat in the living room and talked. Rather, he lay on the rug in front of the fireplace with Cami, and I sat.

Am potentially looking at a change of careers next year. We'll see how things go. Law has been more frustrating than rewarding of late. It's always been a love/hate relationship for me.

Flo died in September and in November, Cami came to live with us. She's been coming along nicely on her training.

Her cousin, Lance, an apricot standard poodle, came to stay with us for 5 days last week. They had a great time, never stopped moving. Sorta like a barrel of snakes. He's a good dog, but I'm glad he went home.

Last night at dinner, everyone brought their dogs. There were 5 altoghether. Two labs, a rotweiller and the poodle. Another barrel of snakes. lol

Today, I'm headed across the bay to have xmas eve with LP's adoptive family. Hopefully, he'll return home with me tonight and we'll have a nice quiet day tomorrow. Planning on taking Cami to the beach for a long walk and some play in the waves.

Hope you are all safe and warm and comfortable and in the company of those who care about you.

xoxo

Meet . . . Cami. 17 pounds (for now) of luv.

What a handfull! She's slowly learning about potty training. Understands her name and the word "no" plus a few others. She's never met a stranger--human or dog. She is very mellow, loves to ride in the car.

Sunday, we took her to Fort Funston, an old WWII military installation on the coast which is an off leash dog walking area. SO MANY DOGS! She was a bit overwhelmed . . . and then she found the ocean! That's her chasing another dog into the waves. After two hours of constant stimulation and lots of "Ooohhh, she's so cute!" she was exhausted.

She's a good fit into the family.

It's A Baby Girl!!!

:D

As you know, I've been scouting around, rather informally, for another dog. Well, I was out running errands yesterday (Friday), when the thought occurred to me that I should stop by the pound. When I walked into the area which houses the available dogs, there she was--in the third kennel on my left. She looked up, wagged her tail and came over to the fence, poking her nose thrugh it. She licked my hand (even though you're not supposed to touch the dogs). It was enough. I turned and left.

Outside, I called LP to find out if he was in the vicinity. He wasn't. It was nearly noon and he wouldn't be finished with his errands until about 2. "I think I found her," I said. His voice was excited, "I'll see you at home at 2."

She's really cute, I thought. We'll be lucky if she's still there in two hours. "She" is a 4 month old lab mix, with a white undercoat and a slightly brownish overcoat which gives here some very subtle "spots."

At 1:15, LP got home. "Ready to go to the pound?" I asked, and in 5 minutes we were in the car and headed back. When we got there, she wasn't in her kennel (out taking a walk), so we returned to the front desk and started filling out preliminary paperwork. While we were doing that, she came in through the front door, head and tail held high, alert and curious about everything. "LP! That's her!" I whispered. She immediately let her walker over to us and we got to pet her a bit.

The clerk looked me up in the computer and saw that I was a previous owner, so I got pre-approved pretty quickly. I told them about Flo and how she'd recently passed away, and about her memorial service, that I'd had a hunch about this puppy earlier in the day, etc (laid it on sorta thick). Then a supervisor came to the counter and told us that she'd been found by a family who had a very strong interest in adopting her, and that finders get first priority. They would be back at 4:30. If they didn't show, or didn't qualify, we could have her. The original clerk argued for us but his decision was final, so we we agreed to wait and if it was meant to be . . .

When we got home it was just after 2 p.m. Two and a half hours to wait and see. At 2:40, the phone rang. It was the clerk from the shelter. They had changed their minds. If we really wanted her, she was ours! "See you in 30 minutes!"

As I'm writing this, she's being spayed. We pick her up on Sunday. I think LP is even more excited than I am! She's had all her shots and got implanted with a locator chip. All this for just over $100 (including the surgery)!

Right now, we're calling her Zena. We'll see if that sticks.

Hugs to all!

Help Me Pick out a Pup

Hi, I need your help. LP has convinced me that it is time to look for another doggie. We've been to the pound a couple of times, but no one called out our names. Flo was half shar pei (Chinese wrinkle dog) and half golden labrador. I've always loved both those breeds. Pure bred Shar pei's come with their own set of problems, as do all purebred dogs. (Once upon a time ago, I seriously thought about getting two labs, a black one and a white one, and naming them Yin ang Yang. But I was the ONLY one who thought that was even REMOTELY cute.)

I've thought about a brown lab, and I'm giving serious thought about weimeraners. (If you have any horror stories, now's your opportunity to let me hear them.) Don't like collies, little yappy ankle biters, anything much over 50 pounds, german shephards. I'm not averse to the pound, but haven't found anything there yet.

I'd get a rescue dog, but I really want a puppy. I want to be able to imprint the dog with all my bad habits (sorta like your Dad teaching you how to drive a car). I work at home all day, so I have to teach the dog to behave on its own when I have to go to court and such.

So, I'm open to your thoughts and suggestions!

Pre-Digital Doggie--Some Puppy PIcs

Flo was a pre-digital dog, so most of her early pics were 35mm. Since I just finished scanning a bunch of them in, I thought I'd share a couple with you.

Banned???

What happened to my blog? Thanks to JCL, I realized that not pulling up any entries wasn't just happening to me, but to anyone else who tried to go there. I've contacted Opera to find out what's up. Hopefully they'll all be visible again soon.

On another note, thanks to all of you who've sent their condolences about Flo. I am missing her greatly and keep expecting her to walk into the room. She used to make this sound from the other side of the door when I'd return home that sounded remarkably like Homer Simpson's "DOH." Homer: Doh! Always used to make me laugh. She made me laugh a lot.

I'm slowly getting her things together and put away. I think I'll soak and wash all her toys and when the new puppy comes along, she can work those over first. Hopefully, I won't wash the squeek out of them.

For now, I'm having to retrieve my own newspaper off the porch. (That was her job.) There's lots of room in the draawer that used to hold her treats, and a brand new, unopened bag of kibble. Anyone got a "senior" dog who needs some food? <sigh>

Rest in Peace: Jan 14, 1993 - Sept 22, 2007

Friday evening, Flo suffered another brain seizure and by Saturday moning, it was apparent we had only one option. So, at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, surrounded by me, her other dad, HD, and two uncles, a veterinarian sdministerd the anesthesia and she slipped peacefully into another world. She is greatly missed. Next month, there'll ce a celebration of her life. Contributions of any amount payable to PAWS (Pets are Wonderful Support . . .) www.pawssf.org (click on donate) in her memory will be accepted.

It only hurt a little . . .

A couple of Sundays ago, I got a bit woozy, passed out and hit my head. At least I figure I must have hit it to cut it open. I really don't remember. What I do remember is regaining consciousness with LP standing over me and being sort of surprised by all the blood and the pain in my head.

LP called the paramedics, who arrived very quickly as the station is only a block away. A large woman burst through the door first ahead of the guys (there must have been 10 of them in all), and in her best command voice started asking me questions and ordering LP around--something he did NOT take kindly to.

She wrapped my head in a HUGE pressure bandage, strapped on a neck brace and loaded me on a back board, all of which was pretty uncomfortable. I asked to be taken to my favorite hospital, but she had already decided to take me to SF General, the county hospital because of its trauma unit. LP and I both got to ride in the ambulance.

General has great doctors, but otherwise sucks. I spent 16 hours in a gurney in the hallway until they found a bed for me upstairs. Even though I'd asked to be transferred to another hospital, they'd apparently found some fluid around my heart and decided to keep me overnight.

By the time I got to the room, I was dehydrated. They couldn't even draw blood. I wouldn't even bleed when they took out the needle. I finally convinced them to hang some saline which solved the problem. Good thing I have no problem using a bed pan.

And the food (if you can call it that) is AWEFUL. Honestly, if the food in prison was that bad, there'd be daily riots.

Good news is that I'm nome. Got the stitches out last Tuesday and it looks pretty good. Back at work and all is pretty normal.

Flo was a bit miffed with me when I got home and took a couple days to warm up. Today, she's been snoozing happily in the sun. One thing about that girl--her snooze control works flawlessly!

How's your week been?

Ya Gotta Have Heart . . . And Other Nonsense

Well, hello there!

Since I last wrote y'all . . . (which isn't quite true) I got a call from my doctor telling me he thought I'd had a minor heart attack. :yikes:  :faint: Scary stuff. Well, they ran me through a BUNCH of tests (I must have really good health insurance) and it turns out that all is well. No heart attack. Must have been gas . . .

***************

Aside from that, yours truly is a VERY happy camper! LP and I are back from a 5 day camping trip in northern CA with about 180 other kinky summer campers, which was REALLY fun. It was his first time in my little camper and he loved it. People usually ask me how long it takes to set it up and my reply is, "About 30 minutes, 45 minutes with help." Well, LP and I set it up in about 20 minutes!

Back now at the grindstone getting ready for a 2 week trial in September.

LP and I have decided that we are "partners," the name we've given to our relationship, and we've definitely moved beyond dating behavior. LOL I used to make sure the house was immaculate before he came over, but I'm allowing him to see a few "warts." (He doesn't seem to mind them.) I've made room for him in the medicine cabinet as he's got a few supplies here and I'm working on a couple of drawers in the dresser and donating some stuff out of my closet. But full time residence is several months away . . .

Today, while I worked, he studied on the other side of the desk. Quiet time together pursuing different paths is nice.

So far, we've taken two long weekends together and have had a great time both times.

Flo is great, for those who keep track.

Hugs to all,
Larry
