I've been a full-time affiliate for 4 years now and have worked with tons of different affiliate networks. One mistake i see beginners making is failing to scout out independent affiliate networks or networks other than the obvious ones like CJ, LinkShare, and ClickBank.
Smarter affiliates also go for independent networks and ones like Hydra Media Network, Azoogle, CPAEmpire and others.
In fact a friend of mine makes an ungodly amount of money on independently run networks as well. You definitely have to be careful though on the single-owner ones and make sure you're getting paid before scaling out any advertising.
