As expected there couldn't have been a bigger culture shock than from an empty, relaxed New Zealand to an crammed, overcrouded. overpriced, "all hail the tourist('s wallet)" Waikiki.
Weather and beach were really beautiful, the tourist not so much (well, there were exceptions).
So, after 2 days off to the east coast of the Big Island (Hilo). Much less people there. reasons are probably the daily rain and the lack of beaches. But there is a shoppingmall and 3 Starbucks.
On the other side (not of the island) there are 2 very high mountains (Mauna Kea, with one of the largest observatories on top(the volcano itself is extinct!), and Maund Loa, the largest mountain in the world (by mass).
A smaller, but more active is kilauea in the volcano national park. It's also called the drive-in volcano, beause you can actually drive through the caldera and to the edge of the crater (google for specific difference). But as it is more active at the moment (mostly steam, but also too much sulphuric air/gas/whatever it is you can't go too near. Thankgod my camera has a good optical zoom! Next to the nationalpark is a nice, but very windy golfcourse. Well, imagine the rest. Hopefully they are less windy in canada.
after flight back i had about 2 days in waikiki to collect enough sunrays for the rest of the year. I tried my best, but i don't think it was enough.
