Google sponsored Wiki in China ?

, , , ...

I am wondering if I can finally make it.Yesterday , I wrote email to Kaifu lee, the head of Google China.Today , I wrote email to Jimmy ,the founder of WiKimieda Org.

I hope all the Chinese netizen will soon have a free accessing ,trouble free Wiki mirror site in China (It will be two way updated but with some restrictions)

The lettle I wrote to Jimmy..
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello Jimmy and other board members:

I am a Chinese blogger and a big fan of Wiki's global Wikipedia project. Wikipedia has been growing so fast during last several years.I noticed that in last three years Wiki's page views had been soared about 3 times .More and more people start relaying on Wikipedia website to get latest , updated knowledge and information.

However, the Chinese version Wikipedia ,especially simplified Chinese version (mainly China Mainland visitors) is underdeveloped for some reason. By far , it only has 44,002 items available for checking. Obviously , China has special political situation and in this sense, some necessary censorship mechanisms are unavoidable at the moment.Main while , China also has huge potential for developing wiki Chinese content. Globally , there are more than 1.5 billion people speak Chinese as the first langague ,plus , there are more than 30 million Chinese learners all over the world.Apart from this , China also has longer then 5000 years civilization and history. This all advantages can be the driving force for wiki Chinese site.

Under this circumstance, in order to develop the content on Wiki Chinese site, I want to propose a project with the sponsorship of Google China , to speed the content construction on wiki Chinese site. Based on this thoughts , I've exchanged some ideas with Dr. Kaifu Lee, the president of Google China. He said in our conversation that he will be considering the possibility of cooperation with Wikimedia Foundation and he's asking for my advice on what google can do to promote wiki site in Chinese world.

Briefly,my idea was:

1.With the help of Google China, to establish a branch of Wiki organization.

2.Mirror all the Wiki Chinese as well as other language content in China (Omit some of the political sensitive items)
The reason for building the mirror site is because most of the Chinese college student could not access oversea websites, suffering oversea sites will be resulting unaffordable expenses.

3.Sacrifice small fragment of political sensitive to exchange the FREEDOM OF KNOWLEDGE (to some extend, Which is considered more important then rights of free speach)

Other details are all negotiable , I hope to see the day Chinese culture and history can be universally accessible by outside the world. I hope Google and your org can ultimately reach the agreement.

Looking forward your reply..and comments on this topic.I'd like to serve as a intermedia of this process.

sincerely ..

Leo

Kaifu-lee gives Chinese CS students some advices for their career planning

, , , ...

Translated from Google China recruiting website.

Accumulate your energy; find the right target to release it.
Kaifu-lee gave Chinese CS students some advices for their career planning.。

Many college students asked us : “ I am not in senior year right now ,but I really wanna know ,if I want to apply a position of Google China R&D center, what is kind of preparation should I do in order to finally achieve this. The following words were Dr. Kaifu-lee and his great colleagues said to all the students who, are or about, thinking about this.

1. Do your homework and get to master those fundamental things.
Students should not just spend plenty of time on learning prevalent programming tools and languages. You need to have a profound understanding and knowledge about some subjects, such as data structure, algorithm, database, and the principles of operating system, computer architecture, computer networking, discrete mathematics and other fundamental things. And you can also try the exercises from Donald Knuth’s “Art of Computer Programming”. If you find you can handle most of the questions from it, you should have enough confidence with your ability of developing algorithm.

2. Give it a try.
Getting more experience through programming practices. This process can finally give a sense of how knowledge will help you with structuralizing your problem solving skills. Personally, I suggest CS students should at least have 100 thousand lines programming experience.

3. Practice makes perfection.
Don’t neglect the impertinence of sample works, just simple like coding and debugging works. You should be always acting professional and willing to pay attention to details.

4. Don’t give up learning mathematics.
Mathematics is everywhere, it is the art and will eventually benefit you in many ways, especially when you are interested in some fields like video, photographic processing, and you need to use this weapon to arm yourself.

5. Learn how to work in a team, be a good team player.

6. Don’t be limited by textbooks and authorities’ frameworks, always having a sense of creativity.

7. Strategically and carefully select your part-time jobs. Under the principle of not influencing your study, you should go out and find some meaningful summer internship or part-time jobs. It is important to work for a company really attaches importance on the quality of coding, find a good boss to instruct your work and do some things will be tested by the users. You need to bear in mind, you are learning from others, instead of instructing others what should do and what should not be doing. Don’t care too much about the salary and title, pick up a good environment for self-improvement, a company gives you opportunities of your personal growth, a company needs your expertise. Last but not least, you should find yourself a good boss.
