Kaifu-lee gave Chinese CS students some advices for their career planning.。

Many college students asked us : “ I am not in senior year right now ,but I really wanna know ,if I want to apply a position of Google China R&D center, what is kind of preparation should I do in order to finally achieve this. The following words were Dr. Kaifu-lee and his great colleagues said to all the students who, are or about, thinking about this.

1. Do your homework and get to master those fundamental things.
Students should not just spend plenty of time on learning prevalent programming tools and languages. You need to have a profound understanding and knowledge about some subjects, such as data structure, algorithm, database, and the principles of operating system, computer architecture, computer networking, discrete mathematics and other fundamental things. And you can also try the exercises from Donald Knuth’s “Art of Computer Programming”. If you find you can handle most of the questions from it, you should have enough confidence with your ability of developing algorithm.

2. Give it a try.
Getting more experience through programming practices. This process can finally give a sense of how knowledge will help you with structuralizing your problem solving skills. Personally, I suggest CS students should at least have 100 thousand lines programming experience.

3. Practice makes perfection.
Don’t neglect the impertinence of sample works, just simple like coding and debugging works. You should be always acting professional and willing to pay attention to details.

4. Don’t give up learning mathematics.
Mathematics is everywhere, it is the art and will eventually benefit you in many ways, especially when you are interested in some fields like video, photographic processing, and you need to use this weapon to arm yourself.

5. Learn how to work in a team, be a good team player.

6. Don’t be limited by textbooks and authorities’ frameworks, always having a sense of creativity.

7. Strategically and carefully select your part-time jobs. Under the principle of not influencing your study, you should go out and find some meaningful summer internship or part-time jobs. It is important to work for a company really attaches importance on the quality of coding, find a good boss to instruct your work and do some things will be tested by the users. You need to bear in mind, you are learning from others, instead of instructing others what should do and what should not be doing. Don’t care too much about the salary and title, pick up a good environment for self-improvement, a company gives you opportunities of your personal growth, a company needs your expertise. Last but not least, you should find yourself a good boss.
