A Letter to the Editor in China Daily
by Leonard

Regarding the article “Oversight vs Privacy” (Opinion, China Daily, Dec.1):

The editorial has my wholehearted support in the real-name system issue. For my part, proper management that will clean up the online environment is worthy of expecting. However, the policy-maker must at first solicit public opinion before launching the regulations, and then carry it out faithfully and efficiently according to the law. The management should be proper, so that people's legitimate rights would not be encroached or suppressed.

Everyone on-line hopes not to be cheated, but at the same time, everyone to some extent cheats others. It is funny, but definitely the fact. As to the reason, I think it results from the lack of supervision. Usually, human-being's behavior in private differs from that in public. It is certain that there is much more freedom when in private. As the saying goes, there is no freedom without limit. Complete freedom cannot be achieved in real society. It is also true of the freedom on line. Therefore, oversight is necessary.

However, there comes the major conflict concerning the protection of privacy. As for most of the netizens, it is not the real-name but the safe of privacy matters much. People hope to get a clean online environment, not the leak or misuse of their personal information. Therefore, there must be clearly defined and applicable laws following the adoption of real-name system.

In a word, both the Internet users and the government call for clean and safe online environment, but whether the real-name system takes effect or not depends on whether there is proper management. People will not agree to get transient and apparent clean online environment at the expense of infringement upon their legitimate rights.

Someone said, "If the limited real name system really puts into practice, the passion and the desire of netizens to comment or to express the real thought will be cooled and gradually disappear."

Well, I don't agree this.
Do you mean you can only get relax on line by anonymity?
I think the main purpose of real-name system is to make us responsible to what we say.
It brings no inconvenience to those who are always honest on line,
but it surely will be a big trouble to those who usually get so-called relax by cheating and expressing irresponsibly on line.
