Paul compares casting off old self and putting on new self to stripping off old soiled clothes and wearing new clean clothes. He asks us to strip off six sins that enslave the emotions and tongue. First is anger. Anger that broods, that is selfish, that which harbours malice, that which wishes to take revenge, is a damaging one. There may be times when anger is called for. But we are to guard against sinning when we become angry (Ephesians 4:26). Second is rage. This is bursts of anger, indignation, and a violent explosive temper. This anger subsides just as quickly as it rose and does not last long. Third is malice. Malice is deep – seated feelings against a person, it is hatred that lasts on and on. It is intense and long lasting bitterness against a person. In I Corinthians 5:8, Paul compares malice to the yeast which even when added in small quantity ferments the whole dough. Similarly, a little malice hidden in one’s heart mars his entire character. Fourth is slander. It is talking bad about a person behind his back. It is insulting, hurting and showing contempt at someone. Leviticus 19:16 says, “Do not go about spreading slander among your people. Proverbs 10:18 says, “Whoever spreads slander is a fool”. Fifth is filthy language. If a believer is to follow and imitate God, he has to be pure in speech and conversation. He has to speak clean words. He cannot let his mouth become foul and polluted, filthy and vile. Sixth is lying. We, as believers should speak only the truth because we are members of the body of Christ, the church.

Dear friends, let us remember that our words can break or build people’s lives. Our words are distorted easily, sometimes even causing irreparable damage to others. The following small story talks so much about the power of words! One day a dog stole a baker’s roast. The baker said to the dog, “I will not whip you or stone you but I will give you a bad name”. As the dog ran away the baker shouted, “Bad dog! Bad dog!”. Soon a group of people started running, chasing the dog shouting, “Mad dog! Mad dog!”. And a blast from someone’s gun ended the dog’s life. So let us commit our emotions and our words to God everyday.



PRAYER: Heavenly Father, give me Your grace each day to strip off garments of anger, rage, malice, slander, filthy language and lie. Let me put on the new garment which is holy and incorruptible, because I am a member of the body of Christ. Let me be holy in all my words, thoughts and deeds. Amen.
