A prison? Uhm... I know a place like this: that was an ancient prison, from the Borboni. Now there's a museum and places for exhibitions.

Bingo! its the model of the prison which was used by the British to send the most notorious of the people fighting for the freedom of India at that time. Its location on this remote island gave it a very strategic position. The punishment to be sent to this jail was so dreadful that it was called the punishment of "kala pani"(kala=black, pani=water) meaning that no one can return alive.

yeah now its been turned into a National Memorial and the govt. sings about how cruel the Britishers were.

yeah to some degree they might have been while the rest is probably exaggerated by the current governments for political purposes.
