what is your 'takiya kalaam' ?

, , , ,

'takiya kalaam' is a term from Urdu language, used as a metaphor. It roughly it means
'a habit to say particular words(sometimes with no meaning),even when not neccessary'.some good instances that i would like to highlight are :

1. Mostly my father says 'wrap up your work',even when we are just screwing around & not doing any kind of work!
2. My english teacher always says after every 5 min , 'keep quiet' or 'shut up',even when no one is making noise or talking!!
3. My younger brother's Chemistry teacher always use the suffix 'Aayen' after completing every sentence.Such as : "In an atom 'aayen',the electrons revolve around the nucleus 'aayen', in their particular orbits 'aayen'.Did you understood something 'aayen'. Then one of the student says 'sir i could'nt understand this 'aayen'!!!
4. My mathemetics teacher always says "'abey gadhey'(abey=you;gadhey=donkey)! .You cant even do this question!"
5. Some people, after listnening every sentence just say 'ya ya,ok'.No matter what they are being told or asked!

Even my 'takiya kalaam' is 'achcha'(achcha=oh yes) in the first place, no matter what is being said or asked!!
And also some people has made a habit to say 'Kya'(kya=what) atleast for one time before properly listening what the other fellow is saying!!
i wonder what is your 'takiya kalaam'?

Silly Names?Religious songs?

The first thought that came to my head before I finished reading your post was, I say 'What?' a lot. But then I read to the bottom and see that is yours as well.

But others I say is, "yeah" or "okay" but mostly, "what"

Very good post!!

No, I do not have that friend anymore.

And to answer this,

But still you must be knowing basics of Urdu?(only if you didnt skipped ur classes)

They didn't teach us that in school. Only Spanish. smile

How stupid of me,i could'nt understand it(thanks to my poor english)!
Holly Molly! you really know Spanish!!(advantage compromised!!)
do you have a good command of it?
& did your friend taught you the basics of Urdu?(sorry for asking it again)
As in my family everyone knows Hindi,Urdu,English & Arabic!!(wow).
Hindi is taught in school & spoken in most parts of India,Urdu is spoken mostly in muslim families so we naturally have to know it.English is a global language & taught in school & medium of studies & examination is also in English. & finally as i am a Muslim,i was taught Arabic from my childhood so as to read the Quran!!(advantage priority increased!). PHEW!!

I say "oh well" a lot. And, i often say "Život je plaža" ("Life is a BEACH").

Zaki Khanliquid snake Saturday, September 2, 2006 7:11:06 PM

i initially thought that 'takiya kalaam's' are the habit of people
familiar to me,or in my contacts only.
but that is proving to be wrong!!
which language do you speak?

Shazaan writes: Say for example, you have two or more names.. Say original name is Akbar, family calls u Sonu and friends call you Zaki .. Then, in general, you'll use urf Akbar urf Sonu urf Zaki..... So URF would mean 'also known as'.

Zaki Khanliquid snake Friday, April 8, 2011 9:17:13 AM

And i would also add to this that urf is used also to refer to a title that is associated with you and makes you popular. This title may have a humourous side to it too, like - lets say someone's name is Amir and he is always very forgetful, and he is sort of popular for his stories forgetfulness, then it would be like Amir urf bhulakkard.
