Our two days road trip to Maine

, , , , , , , , , ,

Ever since we checked in our apartment at Quebec, we been wanting to visit the state of Maine. So last Friday after Lorenzo finished his work, we took off and heading to Maine. From Quebec city to Augusta city, Maine was about 150 miles drive. It took us about 45 mins to drive out of Quebec city because of heavy Friday traffic, but once we left the downtown Quebec, the drive and the scenery were just beautiful.

Beautiful Canada country side scenery. Unlike many cities in California, Canada doesn't seem like have those crazy building codes or HOA stuffs. Each building we saw on the road all got its unique and gorgeous style.

It didn't take us long to reach US boarder, had to say the moment we cross that boarder, we felt like we were home again.

After crossed the boarder, we were driving thought an endless ocean of trees, just like those heros advanture though the middle-earth in Lord of the Ring. Oh, we also drove by not only our first moose, but also saw our first moose crossing bigsmile

Jackman, Maine

"Jackman" was the first town we drove by after passing the boarder. We stop by a little lakeside park for a break and also enjoyed the beautiful sunset scenery.

What a great idea to get you slow down!! The little roadside gift shop got some good sense of humor...

Axell's Scandinavian Inn - Manchester, Maine

Finally reached our motel at Augusto. We hardly pre-booked our lodging, we always called around the area for pricing and also check reviews online. This little Scandinavian motel got a very friendly lady who answered our called and their room featured a functional kitchen. A good night sleep and we were so ready for our lobster search the next day.

Next Day

Maine Coast Welcome Center - Belfast, Maine

On our way to Bar Harbor, we drove passed this little information center, we decided to stop by for some recommendation to any local good eat and attractions. We thought we were just going in to crab some pamphlets, but out of our surprised, this lovely couple who run a really beautiful center gave us such warm welcome when we came in. They gave us great tips for where to visit and great recommendation for all the great places to eat around Bar Harbor and even Augusto. If you ever travel passed Maine, stop by Maine Coast Welcome Center, this lovely couple, oh, and their cute pet dog, will be there welcome you in.

Bar Habor, Maine

Jeannie's Breakfast - Barhabor, Maine

By the time we reached Bar Harbor, it's already nearly 2:00. Both of our stomach were protesting. We stopped by "Jeannie's Breakfast" for their famous home-made Oatmeal Bread and Strawberry Rhubarb Jam!

Most of their breakfast plate come with your choice of bread, however, if it was your first time to Jeannie's, try out their famous oatmeal bread, it was heavenly delicious.

Pancake with famous local Maine blueberry, best blueberry pancake we ever had.

In Jeannie's, they always served their freshly made strawberry rhubarb jam, it go so well with their oatmeal bread. You can also order their jam and pancake mix online at their website.

After our wonderful meal at Jeannie's, we continued our exploration of this lovely harbor town. There's lots to see and shop here. We really have lots of fun being a tourist there. All the locals were really friendly and chat were always welcome here.

Very cute local wood workshop, selling lots of hand-made wood tools and DIY toy kits.

We stopped by this cute ice cream shop for their famous Maine blueberry ice cream. Their ice cream taste so natural and delicious, None of those artificial taste like most store-brought brand.

Maine also famous for their "Whoopie" pie, many Maine bakers had their own recipes for it, some prefer cream cheese icing filling, some used fresh wiped butter cream filling. They all got great taste.

As much we would like to stay a bit longer, but we had to continue our journey to great tasty Maine lobsters.

Bass Harbor Head lighthouse - Mount Desert Island, Maine

Bagaduce Lunch - Brooksville, Maine

The couple at the marine welcome center highly recommended this lobster roll place "Bagaduce Lunch", we of course need to take a look of this place which even all the locals were talking about it.

We ordered the seafood sample plate and a large lobster roll, this giant lobster roll only $13, a deal you would never found at anywhere outside of Maine.

This seafood sample plate came with variety of local seafood, like delicious Maine Soft-shell clam, sweet Maine shrimp, lots of giant scallop, and 2 huge pieces local Haddock fillets.

If not because we want to save some room for our lobster dinner, I think we can gobble another 2-3 of this lobster roll, it so X 100000 times good, yeah, it's that good...

Little picnic area behind Bagaduce, it got a great view and lots of spring mosquitoes were so eager to join our lunch party as well.

Penobscot Narrows Bridge - Prospect, Maine

There's observatory right on top of bridge tower, they closed right before we reached there, so we can only take a snapshot from distance.

Young's Lobster Pound - Belfast, Maine

Yes oh mighty, we were finally here!! Famous Young's Lobster Pound. You can't have lobster fresher than this, all seafood here, especially lobster, all came directly from boat to their pound after been fished up.

Order from Young's was simple, you pick the size of the lobster you want, 1 - 1 1/4 lb (small), 1 1/2 - 2 lb (median), 2+ lb (large), different size got different price per lb. Young's also got crab, maine soft-shell clam (must try), corn on the cob and more.

We got ourselves a 2 1/3 lbder and a 3 lbder, we never ordered lobster this big. we were so excited.

We also got ourselves a lb of soft-shell clam, they are not really soft-shelled, but since they live in mud and sand, their shell is relatively thinner compare with other clam family. They were the most delicious clam we ever had, so if you travel to east coast, you owe yourself to try some of these juicy clam.

Young's also got a little dinning area right behind their pounds, so you can enjoy your lobster dinner with a great view of the harbor and salty sea breeze smell enhance your experience to another level. Look at this seagull, he was patiently waiting for any chance to snap a piece of two from your plate. But not from us, we decided to bring our lobsters back to our motel, to avoided a embarrassing scene we were about to cause.

At Young's, they will cook your seafood free of charge. We highly recommended letting them cooked for you, because they use sea water to cook their seafood, and that huge pot of sea water can only get better and better with all that lobster, clam and corn juice cooked into it.

Their famous lobster dinner plate, come with one lobster of your choice, one corn on the cob, some clam and a large dish of butter.

It took about 25-30 mins to get our 5+ lb lobsters ready, look at the color of these beauties.

Young's staff will help you crack your lobster ready, or you can choose keep the whole thing intact and do it yourself later. They also help packed the whole thing for us in a box with bags carefully wrap around them to prevent any leakage. What a service!! Highly recommended Young's Lobster Pound for anyone who want the best Maine lobster experience.

A whole basket of just cooked crabs, I think they were for some local market or restaurant.

Oh yeah ~ never had a lobster this big, and the best part, we have TWO!! So no more fighting or sharing this time. To make the experience even better, we also got some local blueberry soda, we were truly in heaven that night.

Our pet lobster "Butter" also enjoyed his share~ yup, his name is Butter bigsmile

Each craw was bigger than our fist!! "Stop taking pictures and start eating!!"

The crazy aftermath, this was truly our first time got completely defected by these sheer amount of lobster meat, I think at the end, we still about a lb of lobster meat left. They had to be tomorrow's lunch.

All the souvenirs we got from our two days Maine journalism.

Beautiful night color in front of our parking lot.

Maine State House Capitol Building - Augusta, Maine

Heavy fog sweep though Augusta downtown that day, great view of Maine's capitol building.

Nearby downtown street scene. Very peaceful little town with lots of history. Many building can be dated up to 1850's.

Wicked Whoopies - Farmingdale, Maine

We stop by this little bakery specialized in making whoopie pies, We asked the staff why they named their pies "Wicked". It turns out in Maine, the local used "wicked" to describe things or stuffs which are super or crazy good. They said "it's wicked good". They featured a long list of different flavor whoopies and you can order them online as well.

The Red Barn - Augusto, Maine

The couple in the welcome center also highly recommanded this little drive-in place, they said "the Red Barn" served the best and award winning seafood chowder in Maine. The Maine seafood chowder is different than normal new England chowder. They don't use flour to thicken their soup. Some place use potato instead. But in Red Barn, they just used fresh cream, butter, and variety of local Maine seafood, included lobster, clam, shrimp and haddock. This bowl of seafood chowder was only $ 6.25, you got got lots of lobster meat, it featured a whole lobster craw sticked out of your bowl.

Portland Downtown, Maine

J's Oyster - Portland, Maine

These two bowls of clam soup supposed to let you wash your clam meat in case of some left over sand. But we end out drink the whole bowl, and oh my god, it was so so so good, best clam juice we ever had.

This was our first time found these oyster crab in our oyster. They said if you eat enough oyster, you will found these crab in them. They are completely harmless, in fact, since they are rare to collect, some locals consider these tinny oyster crabs highly prized delicacy.

Public Market - Portland, Maine

We found this little PB&J sandwich shop in this publish market at downtown Portland, we ordered ourselves a peanut butter, blueberry jam and "Fluff" on whole wheat bread. From west cost, we hardly use "Fluff" on our PB&J, in fact, this is my first time of trying Fluff. I immediately fall in love with this magical combination.

Good-bye Maine, you are a truly amazing and beautiful State, we will surely be back to visit again soon.
