Locum is a Latin term which means a standby or a substitute. Locum doctors are temporary doctors appointed in hospitals and health care centers for a particular period of time. Locum jobs are of a temporary nature. These locum doctors are constantly on the move visiting places where they are wanted.
Locum jobs are preferred by people who have just come out of medical school or those who have recently finished post graduation who are desirous of exposure. The experience gained by the doctors taking up locum jobs is worthwhile before landing in a permanent job. In many cases locum jobs help the doctors in selecting the location for permanent practice.
Locum jobs are obtained through agencies. Many of these agencies have websites and online application and appointments are made. About 50 to70 % of doctors in hospitals hold locum jobs. The specialists sometimes hold locum jobs in a number of hospitals that makes them act like visiting doctors to various hospitals. This enables them to treat many patients and also earn plenty of money.
When permanent doctors go on vacation or when they are not available for some reason doctors holding locum jobs fill the gap so that patients don’t have to go away without a doctor.
