Understanding climate change

Lately, it seems that the media has been flooded with climate stories and (as I am a climatologist) I have been asked by many friends and acquaintances to help them unravel science from conjecture. Fortunately, the good folks at RealClimate have now done a lot of this hard work for me and put together a list of resources that people can use to get up to speed on climate change. This is a great starting point for understanding one of the key issues that will shape our world over the next generation.

It's scary how often I hear people say something like "so what if the polar ice melts?", where my initial reaction is a mental image of me smacking the person in the face, telling them to wake up. Let's hope that there's still chance to save the planet.

That's kind of my reaction when I hear politicians talk about buying offsets and emissions trading. These are solutions that may ease our collective conscience in the short-term but which do nothing to address the causes of climate change in the long run.
