aria, harrahs, las vegas, poker room
A brand new poker room has opened up on the Las Vegas Strip, promising players one of the most sophisticated and luxurious poker experiences to date. The poker room is situated at the Aria, a new mega hotel that forms part of the spanking new Vegas CityCenter complex which boasts just over 4000 rooms.
Despite the fact that the hotel planners initially intended creating a 12 room poker room, optimism must be high because the Aria boasts no less than 24 poker tables. Players should be able to find poker games at all levels, from the mid to the high ranges to suit a good range of bankroll sizes.
One of the more interesting features of this new poker room is the fact that it offers 11 am tournaments for players who dare to venture out at that time of the morning to enjoy a gaming session.
Eighteen out of the 24 tables will be situated on the main floor, while five others are elevated near the poker room cashier cage to serve particularly high stake players.
The Aria is situated right in the heart of the Vegas Strip, rubbing fences with the Bellagio and the creators of the poker room are hoping that the close proximity will pull in the crowds.
Some people are skeptical that this is the time to introduce a new poker room to the Strip when hotel rooms are standing empty and the country is only crawling out of a recession.
Many poker rooms have been forced to shut down in the last few months, including some in top hotels such as Tropicana and the Hilton. Others are doing slightly better by keeping partial hours only.
Yet there are some classic poker rooms where the recession managed to bypass all those in it. Caesars, MGM and the Wynn are always buzzing with poker players looking for some action at every level, which means that there are customers out there.

doyle brunson, poker, shaved head
It’s not every day that you’ll see over a dozen professional poker players sitting around the table with shaved heads, but that is exactly what happened on the first day of the World Poker Tour Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic this week in Las Vegas.
No less than 19 pros who had descended on the city to play in the tournament decided to show solidarity with their fellow poker player, Thuy Doan who is suffering from cancer, and have their heads shaved. Because of tough chemo treatment, Doan has lost all her hair and her poker pals wanted to show her that she’s not alone in her ordeal to fight the cancer.
Phil Ivey’s personal barber gathered the 19 the pro’s villa at the Bellagio and trimmed their heads for this very good cause. The pros included Tom Dwan, Joe Sebok and Barry Greenstein, and even Ivey agreed on a slight trim!
According to a reporter who went in the villa to watch the pros have their locks cut, the group flipped to see who would be the first one to meet the buzz machine.
The reporter also described Ivey’s amazing home that boasts views of the entire Vegas Strip and the Bellagio fountains. The house also features a huge outdoor entertainment section complete with a swimming pool, hot tub and rolling grass.
Other ‘perks’ of being one of the best poker players in the world include a private butler, a wet bar and a private gym.
In her blog, the 23 year old poker pro, Thuy Doan describes her discovery of the cancer, her battle to ensure that she benefits from health insurance cover and the chemo itself.
“One of the disadvantages of playing cards is the lack of health insurance and we've accepted that reality as we hit the tables day after day. There are no group policies to join, no protections from the insurance companies as they hold the power to judge and discard us at will,” wrote Thuy regarding her battles with the insurance companies.
Kudos to the 19 pros who took some time out to show solidarity for their fellow player!

Calvin Ayre, founder of
Bodog gambling website and subsequent brands such as Bodog Poker, has featured in a National Post article entitled: “Calvin Ayre Online Gaming Tycoon”.
The article, written by top financial reporter, Diane Francis, interviewed the ‘semi-retired’ Ayre in his new adopted home in the tropics of Antigua.
Ayre was first asked about the reasons why the Americans cracked down on internet gambling. The Canadian native replied that the
US authorities became concerned and passed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act which restricts the transfer of funds between banks and international gaming and poker sites.
“It's not illegal for Americans to place bets, but it's illegal to solicit them,” said Ayre.
Ayre said that he does not enter the United States “because nobody in our space will go there.”
“It’s just standard procedure,” he said.
When asked by Francis whether he has managed to avoid some of the problems faced by UK and European gambling operators by US authorities, Ayre replied: “They [the Americans] have left me alone. I voluntarily exited that market in 2006. I don't think any of us are important in the big picture. The U.S. has a few other problems to think about these days. It's flattering but there are much bigger issues right now.”
Calvin Ayre recalls how his entered the online gambling world after starting out in the real estate world: “I read the newspaper one day about Ron "the Cigar" Sacco who was taking bets in Dominican republic from the phone. That was the light bulb moment for me -- sports betting over the net. Nobody else was doing this so I started building the software. With money raised in the market in 2000 I put up my website in three months and hired Carl Schmidt, a brilliant and hardworking software architect right out of university.”
By 2006, Ayre had appeared on the cover of People magazine as one of the world’s most eligible bachelors and one of Forbes 100 Richest People.
When asked about plans for the future, Ayre said that he would be launching a Bodog Poker Network in September. “Poker is not illegal to bet online in the U.S. because it's considered a skilled game,” he said. “It's a grey area but there are lots of American companies with poker sites. I hired a guy who ran one and in 2010 we will have our site.”

World Series of Poker, closed, harrahs, WSOP
The establishment that will forever be linked with the origins of the
WSOP has been forced to close its doors.
Binion’s Casino, which was home to the WSOP for its first 36 years, has hit financial troubles and its owners have decided that the time has come to shut down the part of the casino.
The casino floor itself, poker room and sports book offering will remain open to visitors for the time being, but the owners have shut down the hotel, coffee shop and keno parlor. 100 out of the 800 employees have been laid off.
Binion’s owned and operated the WSOP until it was sold to Harrah’s Entertainment in 2005. However, recently the parent company of Binion’s Gambling Hall and Hotel in Las Vegas announced that it was carrying out the partial closure.
The company said that it hoped to be able to pull through the recession and reopen the establishment once more.
“We plan to reopen it, but we can’t speculate when that will happen. Las Vegas has been hit so hard with the dramatic drop in visitor spending and the average daily room rate has plummeted,” said a spokesperson for the company. “Our hotel rooms were no longer competitive in the market. We had to make cuts where our biggest drains were, the hotel and coffee shop.”
Financial problems began for the company long before the current recession, however. Becky Behnen acquired the business from her father, the original owner Benny Binion, in 1998 and issues began to surface from that time on.
In 2004, US marshals seized money from the business to pay employees and the hotel and casino were closed in that year. Things improved after Harrah’s purchased the WSOP brand and the casino, and the hotel reopened soon after. Binion’s (without the WSOP brand) was eventually resold by Harrah’s Entertainment.
Tournament director, Matt Savage, commented on the Binion’s closure on his Twitter page this week. “Binion’s Horseshoe was both hated and loved by poker players over the years, but it is definitely missed by those that played the WSOP there!” he wrote.
