Mission Impossible on Poker After Dark
Monday, 29. September 2008, 06:18:43
Season 4 of Poker After Dark has started airing again after a brief hiatus. Season 4 was shot in April at the South Point Hotel in Las Vegas and began airing on NBC from the 14th of July. After the completion of the first three events the show went of air on the 3rd of August. It has resumed this week.
This week’s episodes are titled Mission Impossible. One of the six players in the shootout is Mike “The Mouth” Matusow. Matusow is a regular on the Poker After Dark Show and at Full Tilt the online poker site but in eight appearances to date he has not yet won any event. His best performance was in one of the events of Season 1, when he was runner-up to Phil Ivey. Therefore Mission Impossible is a jibe on Matusow’s performance to date. What makes matters worse for Matusow is that each of his five competitors has registered at least one victory on Poker After Dark. Matusow is facing off with Phil Laak, Phil Hellmuth, David Williams, Clonie Gowen and Gavin Smith. Hellmuth has three wins under his belt, Clonie has won on two occasions and the other three have single victories to their name.
If anything “Mission Impossible” will egg on Matusow to put in his best. The “Bad Boy” of poker was never the type to shy away from a challenge. It is not that Matusow is not capable of winning. He has two WSOP bracelets and two WSOP Main Event final tables. It remains to be seen if Matusow achieves mission impossible, because his competitors are his equals in stature. Clonie is the only lady in the fray. She is so named because she was born in the middle of a cyclone and she has taken the world by storm. In her first major tournament this Miss Teen Oklahoma vanquished the likes of Jennifer Harman, Annie Duke, and Kathy Liebert. Smith is the WPT Player of the Year for 2006. Away from the tables he plays golf and hosts poker shows, in one of which he had his co-hosts initials tattooed on his body. Very little needs to be said about Hellmuth. 11 WSOP bracelets winner and the sobriquet “Poker Brat” sums it all. Laak can be recognized by his trademark hooded sweatshirt and dark sunglasses. He speculates in stocks and invests in real estate and is currently dating poker pro Jennifer Tilly. Jennifer has recently turned 50, but looks only 25. Williams started playing only four years ago and has already earned over $5 million in tournament money. In an era when poker players tend to be college dropouts Williams was a 4.0 GPA student.
Each player will put $20,000 in the kitty and at the end of the week the winner will walk away with $120,000. The episodes will be aired late night from Monday to Friday or more correctly early morning from Tuesday to Saturday. And even if you are not interested in the poker it is worth staying awake to watch the sexy Leeann Tweedeen host the show.
