We're rapidly approaching our second Kestrel Beta, and the bug fixes are pouring in  As usual, head over to the the Desktop Team Blog for a complete list of fixes, here's the in-depth list of Mac-specific highlights:

Highlights

  • Fixed the font crasher
We had a devious crasher that took on many forms, but it usually appeared when using GMail/Google Reader or having lots of open tabs. Fixed!

  • The print dialog is back
For a while now, Opera has skipped the print dialog and just printed automatically. This is fixed.

  • Drag and drop and clipboard handling of images has been greatly improved
We've had a few issues (color corruption, missing previews, etc.) with drag'n'drop and copying of images, but these should all be worked out now. Please test this, especially if you're running OS X 10.4 or below, and report any issues you encounter.

  • Fixed various bugs with CJK fonts on Tiger
We had some issues with various CJK fonts that made fonts ugly and/or made them behave unpredictably when highlighted. This should now be fixed.

  • File selector now remembers your last used folder again
The Open, Save and <input type="file"> file choosers have all had some memory problems for a while now. This is fixed.

  • Cut/paste works in rich text areas again
We had a bug that made cut and paste work unpredictably in Google Docs, but this should now work as expected.

  • Fixed Flash layering problems
We had some depth issues when there were several Flash plugins on top of each other, such as on StarWars.com and SciFi.com. Not anymore!

New Kestrel snapshot: 4758

New snapshot! A nice mix of fixes and enhancements for you today. As usual, head over to the Desktop Team Blog for the full changelog and known issues list.

Highlights

  • Launch time optimizations
Our developers have worked on optimizing the font loading code, so Opera now starts up 13-14% faster on both cold and warm launches using a clean profile on our test machine. These optimizations were already in the previous snapshot, but a bit buggy.

  • Keyboard input might be fixed
Thanks to your feedback to our previous blog post, we believe the keyboard input issue with special characters is fixed. Please test this if you've had this problem and let us know if it's fixed

  • Changed "Meta" to "Control" in the Keyboard Shortcut editor
Previously, the control key has been named "Meta" in the Keyboard Shortcut editor, but this understandably caused some confusion. We have now changed it to the much more intuitive "Control".

  • Importing Safari bookmarks works again
It is once again possible to select the Safari bookmarks plist file and import it.

  • Scroll bar issues fixed
The scroll bar should now behave properly again.

  • Fixed a font issue with serif/sans-serif fonts
We had an issue with serif fonts overriding sans-serif fonts due to the optimizations in the font loading code, but this is now fixed.

  • Fixed an issue with lingering Real Player video plugins
Fixed a bug that made some Real Player videos stay on screen even when switching tabs.

New known issues
  • You might bump into a seemingly random font-related crasher if you have many open tabs. A fix is in the works.

New Kestrel snapshot: 4716

New snapshot today, and the main Mac-specific highlight is a bunch of keyboard fixes. Function keys, Shift+space and a few other keyboard issues are fixed. There's still one issue left, and we need your help to fix it. More on that after the highlights and known issues. The complete changelog and known issues list is available in the Desktop Team blog.

Highlights

  • Shift+space for Page Up works again.
You can use Space and Shift+space for Page Down and Page Up, respectively, and the latter now works again.

  • Function keys work again.
F2, F4, F5 and friends should now work reliably again.

  • Opera now uses the proper OS X Downloads folder by default.
We used to download stuff to the Desktop by default when you clicked "Save to Download Folder". We have now changed it to use the default Downloads folder on Leopard, so your downloads show up in the Downloads stack in the Dock.

  • Changed the icon in alert and prompt dialogs to something prettier.
A small Macification, but a Macification nonetheless. The default exclamation mark icons in prompts and alert dialogs has been changed to a more native-looking icon. Enter "javascript:alert()" in your address field to see it.

  • Fixed outgoing encoding selection in Opera Mail for non-English installations on Intel hardware
There was a bug that made the outgoing encoding on non-English setups default to UTF-8 instead of the appropriate local encoding on Intel machines; this is now fixed.

New known issues
  • The scroll bar is a bit dodgy
  • Unicode keyboard input might still be buggy

Help!
Some testers reported that keyboard input was somewhat broken in the previous two snapshots, particularly accented characters. To help us figure out what's causing this, we've made a special debug build that prints some debug info to the terminal. Here's what you do if you're having problems with special characters:

  1. Download and install this build instead of the one below
  2. Instead of launching it normally, right-click it and choose Show Package Contents
  3. Enter the Contents/MacOS folder
  4. Right-click the Opera file and select Open With > Terminal
If everything went according to plan, a Terminal window will appear together with the usual Opera window. You should be able to use Opera as usual, but whenever it encounters some funky character that's not supposed to be there, it will print some debugging info to the Terminal. Please copy this debugging information and send it to us.

Thank you, enjoy, and have a nice easter!

First of all, welcome to the Mac Team blog!

We figured it would be nice to have a place where we can share a little more in-depth information about Opera for Mac in particular, and gather feedback from you guys and gals. You're getting a snapshot with lots of Mac-specific changes today, so we have an excellent occasion to kick off the blog. Consider this an experiment for now, and don't expect a new post here for every Kestrel snapshot we release. If you have any particular wishes for this blog, please let us know in the comments

Highlights

  • Fixed quadruple mouse click
Two clicks selects the word, three clicks selects the sentence, four clicks selects the paragraph. The latter now works again.

  • Fixed Event.ctrlKey and Event.metaKey with onkeydown
This fixes a few cases where web applications check for metaKey and ctrlKey on onkeydown events, particularly Cmd+Left/Right on Facebook.

  • Fixed plugins
Yes, QuickTime and friends are finally back! There have been a lot of changes to the plugin code lately, so please test them extensively. Report all bugs :ninja:

  • Emacs-style keyboard shortcuts are back
Ctrl-A, Ctrl-E, Ctrl-D, Ctrl-K, Ctrl-Y, etc. should now finally work again in text fields

  • Reactivated the asynchronous draw timer
We've had a long-standing issue with Opera's rendering "freezing" when opening context menus and drop-downs. This is now fixed. Please play around with it and see if it breaks anything.

  • Fixed "Activate the next tab" preference
This preference, described in the previous snapshot post, should now work on Mac as well. "Activate first tab opened from current tab" still doesn't work.

  • Fixed an issue with Java disabling minimization and quitting
There's been a long-standing issue where Java applets have prevented you from minimizing and/or quitting Opera, this is now fixed.

  • Fixed a very common crash related to plugins and links with anchors
This is one of the Mac-specific general stability fixes that went into 9.26. The symptom was seemingly random crashes when you clicked links on pages with plugins on them, and it caused a lot of crashes. This is now fixed :headbang:

  • Fixed fscommand Flash/JavaScript interface
This was actually fixed in the previous build, but it didn't make it to the changelog. This should fix the MySpace profile editor, VectorMagic, the menus at CSTV and several other Flash sites.

New known issues
  • Opera does not currently work on Mac OS X 10.3
  • Keyboard input is buggy (Unicode, function keys)
  • Print dialog no longer shows up
