Macifying Opera, one issue at a time

New Kestrel snapshot: 4758

, ,

New snapshot! A nice mix of fixes and enhancements for you today. As usual, head over to the Desktop Team Blog for the full changelog and known issues list.

Highlights

  • Launch time optimizations
Our developers have worked on optimizing the font loading code, so Opera now starts up 13-14% faster on both cold and warm launches using a clean profile on our test machine. These optimizations were already in the previous snapshot, but a bit buggy.

  • Keyboard input might be fixed
Thanks to your feedback to our previous blog post, we believe the keyboard input issue with special characters is fixed. Please test this if you've had this problem and let us know if it's fixed

  • Changed "Meta" to "Control" in the Keyboard Shortcut editor
Previously, the control key has been named "Meta" in the Keyboard Shortcut editor, but this understandably caused some confusion. We have now changed it to the much more intuitive "Control".

  • Importing Safari bookmarks works again
It is once again possible to select the Safari bookmarks plist file and import it.

  • Scroll bar issues fixed
The scroll bar should now behave properly again.

  • Fixed a font issue with serif/sans-serif fonts
We had an issue with serif fonts overriding sans-serif fonts due to the optimizations in the font loading code, but this is now fixed.

  • Fixed an issue with lingering Real Player video plugins
Fixed a bug that made some Real Player videos stay on screen even when switching tabs.

New known issues
  • You might bump into a seemingly random font-related crasher if you have many open tabs. A fix is in the works.

OK, thanks for the font-related crasher "new issue."

I'm seeing a random crash when Opera is just sitting (2 windows, ~14 tabs total). I thought it may have been Gmail2-related, since I've kept it open in a background tab lately...

nice build! i've found a new bug however: sorting mails by "sent" (date) always shows latest mails at the bottom, reverse order is not possible.

Let me take this opportunity and say that I think it's a great idea to have a platform-specific dev blog! That way the things important to users of one platform are much more obvious... Imho, great idea, keep it up

And that's although I don't even *have* a Mac :D

Macify suggestion:

Please consider adding 3-D rounded shadows between tabs. The appearance is too flat and "squeezed" currently, I think...

Looks great, generally, though!

@kamalesh: the Gmail2 crash might be the font crasher in disguise.

@felixmuc: hm, I can't reproduce that bug. Sorting by date works like a charm here. Anyone else?

Glad to hear that the keyboard issues are fixed. Thank you all!

@blaabjerg

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, Joachim. The random crashes don't seem to happen if the Gmail2 tab isn't left open.

Btw, the RAM usage is much better in this build, I'm noticing, also. Keep up the great work with the Mac builds!

Hi, I use the mail client in Opera. Once upon a time when composing a letter I could use a spelling checker. It worked well with the system dictionary. Then there was a problem with Opera crashing when one pressed the "Learn" button. The "fix" for this was to remove the "Learn" button! Now in 9.26, 9.27 and 9.5 there is no spelling checker. The link to the system dictionaries seems to have been removed and a message comes up asking if one would like to install a dictionary! Definitely UN-Mac. One is still told that the Mac version of Opera works with the system dictionary, but it doesn't any longer. I am not aware of moving any dictionary folders or files. And I do find a spelling checker useful, like the one in Thunderbird or Apple's Mail. Both are still working well with the system dictionaries and thesaurus.

Regards, Alan
