Mac Team

Macifying Opera, one issue at a time

avatar

New Kestrel snapshot: 4784

, ,

We're rapidly approaching our second Kestrel Beta, and the bug fixes are pouring in  As usual, head over to the the Desktop Team Blog for a complete list of fixes, here's the in-depth list of Mac-specific highlights:

Highlights

  • Fixed the font crasher
We had a devious crasher that took on many forms, but it usually appeared when using GMail/Google Reader or having lots of open tabs. Fixed!

  • The print dialog is back
For a while now, Opera has skipped the print dialog and just printed automatically. This is fixed.

  • Drag and drop and clipboard handling of images has been greatly improved
We've had a few issues (color corruption, missing previews, etc.) with drag'n'drop and copying of images, but these should all be worked out now. Please test this, especially if you're running OS X 10.4 or below, and report any issues you encounter.

  • Fixed various bugs with CJK fonts on Tiger
We had some issues with various CJK fonts that made fonts ugly and/or made them behave unpredictably when highlighted. This should now be fixed.

  • File selector now remembers your last used folder again
The Open, Save and <input type="file"> file choosers have all had some memory problems for a while now. This is fixed.

  • Cut/paste works in rich text areas again
We had a bug that made cut and paste work unpredictably in Google Docs, but this should now work as expected.

  • Fixed Flash layering problems
We had some depth issues when there were several Flash plugins on top of each other, such as on StarWars.com and SciFi.com. Not anymore!

Thanks for thet font-crasher fix, Joachim!

I sleep/wake my MBP for weeks without shutting down or closing Opera, but when I installed this build...launch times are rocket fast now.

Great job on this pre-beta2.

Btw, any pending Macification we can hope to see in the near future? (hint, hint.)

Google Maps is fast in this build (or maybe the speed increase was brought forward by one of the earlier builds). Amazing!

Edit: Is the "drag-and-drop image to photoshop icon" bug being worked on as well? It's a real timesaver, which is deeply missed.

@kamalesh: you never know, you're just going to have to wait and see

@zyph: thanks for the heads up!

Great fixes, especially glad to see the print issue fixed.

Has bug #318901 been investigated yet? If it's not important enough to fix (which I could understand), I guess I could just reconfigure my keyboard shortcuts...

Oh, one other thing, are you guys aware that when Widget creators on Macs use the OSX "Compress" option to make a widget .zip, the widget doesn't work in Opera 9.5, whereas it does in Opera 9.2? I've had to use some alternative compressor lately for that, so that would be nice to see fixed.

Seeing artifact blurring on this build still after 1-2 days of use (no quitting). It's happening on the right edge as before...reload or clicking fit-to-width unblurrs but scrolling brings it back until I restart Opera. (v10.5.2-intel)

EDIT: Actually happening on the bottom edge also. Not sure if it's a function of my display and window size? (1680x1080, and my browser window size is 1060:977, so I stretch it from the menu bar all the way down.)

@zyph: Good point, dragging an image into Imagewell icon on the dock is non-responsive, also.

@blaabjerg: Oh, no teasing on macifying...not cool!

I'm still get sporadic crashes couple times with a background tab open in Gmail2. Once while scrolling in a complex HTML email in Gmail2. Some remnants from the font bug still?

No italics on Wikipedia in this build on Mac OS X 10.2.8

I just tested on previous build, 4758, which shows italics all right, and then again, on this one, 4784, where italicized text on Wikipedia shows as plain text. (Bold text shows ok.)

NO problem on XP Windows with corresponding build 9937.

And I do see italics on this blog page using 4784, so...

Italics on Wikipedia don't show whether rendered in MediaWiki markup with apostrophes or enclosed in html <i> </i> tags.

It seems right click-refresh is broken in this build :\

Thought I'd give an update on my trouble with copying images from Kestrel. I can copy and paste from the newest Kestrel build to Photoshop on PowerPC, but not on Intel. Copying to Photoshop results in an error dialog:

This does not appear to be a valid PICT. QuickDraw may crash attempting to draw it. Try anyway?

If I press OK it gives me this:

Could not import the clipboard because of a problem parsing the PICT.

When copied from Kestrel on PowerPC Photoshop will treat it as if you copied a PDF document's page and decided to paste it into the program, resulting in what Photoshop calls a "Vector Smart Object". In this case it's essentially the image itself as a PICT file with a vector mask inside a PDF document. Illustrator on both architectures just ignores the pasting. Other programs just copy the file as it is to the clipboard.

I've been keeping the Console open keeping up with errors posted to it. Coincidentally Kestrel spits out image-based errors frequently. I'm unsure if it's connected, but it wasn't present in Merlin:

[0x0-0x25025].com.operasoftware.Opera[197] Ignoring Quickdraw drawing between QDBeginCGContext and QDEndCGContext

Onto another issue. I'm unsure if it's unique to Mac OS X, but Unicode support in the newest build appears to be rather off. I've looked at changelogs and haven't found any known issues listed in the Desktop Team's blog, but you guys might already be aware, but viewing a combining diacritical mark table in Merlin and then in Kestrel shows that Kestrel fails to view some characters compared to its older sibling.

Why there is so few options in Additional Tab Options for Mac Opera?
I miss "click on tab to minimize"...

By FataL, # 24. April 2008, 22:23:51

avatar
@FataL: Yeah, I've asked about that also. I think they said it's against Apple's HIG. "Click on tab to minimize/hide" is something I miss from Opera Win, definitely...

By kamalesh, # 25. April 2008, 03:36:10

I just can't use Opera w/o this feature. It is so useful, and I don't care what Apple's HIG says about it.

I agree, Andrey, I agree, but maybe it's a small price to pay for enjoying Kestrel on Leopard, no?
