TZADIK POZNAŃ FESTIVAL - 9th - 11th August 2oo7

TZADIK POZNAŃ FESTIVAL will attempt to open a multistream dialogue with Jewish culture in a very special place in Poznań: in a synagogue which will just for a while stop its present function as a swimming pool to serve as the meeting centre of history, tradition, culture and people.

The core of the festival's first edition will be music associated with the cult, New York-based TZADIK record company, founded in 1995 by John Zorn. The bands connected with the company will present the most precious, truest and most creative aspects of contemporary klezmer music (or broadly speaking: culture).

TZADIK POZNAŃ FESTIVAL will attempt to describe a phenomenon of Jewish culture and tradition, its religious, musical, social and moral context. It will try to revive the spirit of that culture in Poznań, the spirit which - though never lost - should be given a special, sensitive way due to desacralisation of the synagogue.

TZADIK POZNAŃ FESTIVAL is a great festivity of music, tradition and memory.

Poznań June 1956 - The First Uprising in East Europe after The II World War against Stalinist terror

, ,

In June 1956 in the atmosphere of growing Stalinist terror, Poznań workers claimed their right to “bread and freedom”.
The demonstration of 100 000, mostly the employees of Poznań factories, met with violent resistance of the communist forces. Communist authorities ordered to smash the demonstration. Shots were fired. 70 people were killed, over 1000 sustained injuries.

The Stalinist system, introduced in Poland in the middle of 1940s, established a dictatorship of the Communist Party, liquidation of various organisations, forced collectivisation of villages, closing down of private trade and commerce. Anyone who opposed the system was prosecuted by the UB secret police. Numerous imprisonments, holding people in prisons without court sentence, show trials and tortures were an every day occurrence at the beginning of the 1950s. Working and social conditions worsened day by day; there was shortage of food supplies. At the same the authorities pressed on with increased work standards, demanding more and more efficient labour.

Poznań was the first city that rebelled. On the morning of 28 June 1956 the workers of the largest Poznań factory (Hipolit Cegielski’s factory which was at the time named after Joseph Stalin) gathered in the Wilda district and walked towards the city centre. Workers from other Poznań factories joined them on the way. Almost all city factories stopped working

A crowd of 100 000 people gathered before noon on the Mickiewicz Square demanding better pay and working conditions.

Just before noon, a rumour spread amongst the protesters about the alleged imprisonment of one of the workers delegations. A few thousand people moved towards the secret police prison at Młyńska Street. The workers stormed in, freed the prisoners and got hold of weapons. The demonstration moved through Kochanowskiego Street towards the headquarters of UB secret police. This is where the first shots were fired at the protesters, starting a regular fight between the militia and the protesting workers. The workers got hold of military facilities situated at each higher education institution.

The exchange of fire lasted all day until late evening. According to the official statistics over 60 civilians and 10 UB soldiers were killed. Amongst the victims there were children, such as 13 year old Romek Strzałkowski, who became a symbol of the Poznań Uprising. Today one of the streets in Poznań’s Jeżyce is named after him. Approximately 1000 people sustained injuries on the day.

After a few hours of fighting the city authorities called for the military help. Altogether over 10 000 soldiers, 400 tanks and 30 armed transporters were used in the pacification process.

On the same evening, the first workers were imprisoned and brutally handled by the UB secrete police. Hundreds of people were judged and sentenced.
However, the Poznań Uprising prompted the process of changes throughout the country. After Stalin’s death, the Autumn of 1956 brought the first signs of destalinisation. The Poznań workers were rehabilitated.

Polish workers rose against the Communists in 1968, 1970, 1976 and 1980. Finally, the events instigated by the creation and activities of the Solidarity movement brought the end to Communism in 1989.

The diversity of artistic trends marked out by the Malta International Theatre Festival determines its strength and identity: an interdisciplinary formula, the quest for new aesthetics and an insight into the significant social and political issues are the leads which will be present throughout the Festival this year. The dimensions of our artistic explorations embrace the theatre, music and dance as well as performance art and film. The goal of the Festival is to provide a plane on which all these dimensions merge, undertake a discourse and establish a new quality of drama. This also includes the outlining of a new artistic map of the city: discovering unusual sites for art to "happen" in has always been one of our greatest challenges. We enjoy observing how various spaces, be they post-industrial halls, old castle courtyards or abandoned abattoirs, determine and inspire the invited artists. This year, Komplex Kapharnaum from France will reacquaint us with the old tram depot at ul. Gajowa (Gajowa Street) where they will perform an inter-medial show which is representative of the French reality theatre.

One of the more significant motives of this year Festival is a reflection on corporality and Pippo Delbono, the Italian director who works with mentally and physically disabled people, will be this year's undisputable star. His distinctively wise and aesthetically sophisticated shows question the mainstream perception of beauty and make people accustomed to its diversified manifestations. Another special guest star who will appear in the Nowy Taniec na Malcie (New Dance at the Malta) programme will be Yvonne Rainer, the American choreographer, film director and icon of postmodern dance, whose range of interests include gender studies. The Malta will also live up to its reputation of a festival that does not avoid provocation with Generik Vapeur, one of the leading collectives of the French Art de Rue (Street Art) movements, inviting viewers, or rather drawing them into a mega street action that will reflect on the mechanisms of politics.

Another major feature of the Malta Festival is music: this was the venue of the legendary concerts of Goran Bregovic and the Buena Vista Social Club. This year's programme will focus on modern and sometimes surprising reinterpretations of ethnic music. We do not wish to conceal our ambition of creating new musical trends in Poland and we hope that Toumani Diabate's Symmetric Orchestra, a group of artists from Mali who won the 2007 BBC Award for World Music, will also be a great success on Lake Malta; whereas BEIRUT from New Mexico and the Polish group Dikanda will win popularity by presenting two different approaches to Balkan music. Also Tony Gatlif, a descendant of the Algerian Roma People, the outstanding director (Polish viewers could watch his latest film, Transylwania recently) and composer, will present a wild blend of traditional and modern music combining Romani melodies and Arabian rap as well as French electronic and Sufi trance music. The Festival will also include a viewing of Tony Gatlif's films.

Film will also be represented at the Festival by Ariane Mnouchkine. A review of her works will be shown for the first time in Poland. The renowned French theatre and film director and the cofounder of the Théâtre du Soleil in Paris uses her artistic productions to comment on important social issues, for example women's and refugees' rights as well as defending the secularity of the state.

The Malta in Poznań is a venue where the great stars and living legends, for example the Living Theatre from the USA who will also be performing at the Festival, meet with the youngest generations of artists. We hope that the Nowe Sytuacje (New Situations) competition will allow us to discover the most interesting young ensemble that in the future will join the group of our regular guests, including Teatr Usta Usta Republika and Teatr Porywaczy Ciał who will present their new premieres at the Festival this year.

This is just an outline of the Festival programme. One thing is certain: the Malta Festival confronts, provokes and searches making the viewers and artists alike more familiar with both difficult topics and spaces. The Festival is a living organism: it thrives on supplies of fresh air and openness without turning its back on the past.
