How to Perform Basic Car Maintenance
By Alex Wilkes
If you are a car owner it is fair to assume that you'd like to keep your car in good condition. Following these simple tips will help you to keep your car running like new.
Driving at a reasonable speed will help preserve your brakes. Unnecessary speed will mean that your brakes will wear faster from frequent hard stops. If driving a geared car use the gears to slow the car down gradually.
Not only your brakes will be saved by driving at a slower speed. Hitting speed bumps and pot holes at high speeds will not be good for your car, especially its suspension. Driving at a reasonable speed will reduce the change of damage to your car this way.
Take your car for routine checkups, especially if you think something is wrong with your car. When possible have the oil and air filters changed.
Check the oil regularly and top up when needed. Changing the oil is great for the cars health. Check the manufacturers handbook for advice on when to change your cars oil.
Keep your window washer fluid, coolant and antifreeze topped up all year round.
Look after your tires! Keep them inflated to the recommended levels and remember that the recommended pressures will change if you are carrying more weight in the car. Rotating your tires can also extend the life of a set of tires. Rotating your tires will mean that all tires will receive a similar amount of wear over their lives. Rotating tires basically involves moving the position of all of the tires around because the tires all take different amounts of wear depending on their position.
It sounds obvious but by washing your car regularly you not only to keep the car looking clean and new but it also removes anything that may cause the car to rust.
Keep the inside of your car looking clean. Vacuum the car, put down some floor mats, and considers putting seat covers into your car if you feel it is especially at risk of spill or dirt. Although this won't affect the performance or lifespan of the car it will improve the resale value if you can keep the interior looking as good as new.
