My Opera Mail Team

Brand new contacts interface

We finally have some visible news to present again at mail.opera.com smile This time it's the contacts screen that has received a serious makeover. We will roll it out over the next few weeks but here is a quick preview.

Not only is the new interface faster and easier to work with, it also makes switching between the mail and contacts tab much faster than before since both screens now are part of the AJAX application.

Editing an entry in the new contacts tab

Finding a contact is done with auto completion, no need to wait for a page to load with results. Important contacts can be pinned and just like with your Inbox, you can choose to display pinned contacts on top. Sort by first name, last name or company and the list is updated immediately.

There will also be an associated Contacts tab in the preferences where you can import and export contacts from a wide range of clients, including Opera's own built-in mailer.

This is great! The old contacts make bad impression on new comers!

Just the copyright below the contacts looks weird.

Now for the labels... whistle

Martin KadlecBS-Harou Friday, June 15, 2012 10:15:50 AM

btw, when changing position of folders in preferences they sometimes try to be subfolders (even though in the end it doesn't work). Do you think you could disable it?

Martin KadlecBS-Harou Friday, June 15, 2012 10:20:35 AM

One more thing, could you add "Sort by: e-mail" which would sort by e-mails and display e-mails instead of names?

Mağruf ÇolakoğluZAHEK Friday, June 15, 2012 10:43:51 AM

Is that implemented? I did not see it...

I will also ask another question. Do you set up myopera mail account into default android e-mail client? such as galaxy s2. I do not mean 3rd party apk, suc as. K9, andromail...

I couldn't manage it as manually or automatic smile

timoti-mo Friday, June 15, 2012 12:03:55 PM

Me neither, I don’t see it.

Oh, and where can I change the icon associated with my profile, so that it appears in the emails I send ?

I've done that myself with the Samsung mailer (yeah, each manufacturer has their own), just follow the details here: http://my.opera.com/mailteam/blog/2012/02/29/client-setup Make sure to use the full e-mail address as login, require authentication and TLS for SMTP sherlock

Mağruf ÇolakoğluZAHEK Friday, June 15, 2012 1:57:13 PM

Sorry but doesn't work smile BUt it works 3rd party apllications well.

Nimesh nimeshthakkar Friday, June 15, 2012 3:30:32 PM

Nice change after a long time
Switching to edit mode/new contact enables the edit mode for all contacts. Is that normal?

Client Setup worked for me on Android default mail client for Motorola Blur

the shortcut to discard mail (draft) is Ctrl-Shift-Esc is directly triggering Task Manager in Windows so I think it should be changed or the event should be handled properly

Mağruf ÇolakoğluZAHEK Friday, June 15, 2012 7:34:06 PM

sorry but really do not understand why mine ls not working. it is galaxy s2.
when I try to set up, I am not able to pass the first screen:)

I can't wait when Opera Desktop will finally do this...

This all looks very nice, but there are two missing features that prevent me to definitively switch from GMail to My Opera Mail: labels and filters. Both can be used via M2, but without a web interface to any of these, is is a show-stopper.

MyOpera mail has folders and rules instead of labels and filters

Filters are already there! Just look into preferences wink

Filters <-> Rules yes .. but folders are not the same thing as labels

Awesome, just like filling contact information on my smartphone.

Yes, that is so. But without being able to apply labels, the Rules felt pretty useless to me. (No wonder I thought there were no filters available.)

Yes, I would second that. It is one thing *moving* a conversation to one folder *or* another; and another thing to apply multiple labels to a conversation and remove the 'Inbox' label (or in Gmail terminology, "Archive" the message). For my using My Opera Mail these features are an absolute must. Keep up the good work!

Alaknár Thursday, June 21, 2012 8:21:04 AM

I've got a bit of a problem with your mail... :/

As you can see I've got a special character ("á") in my nickname. I like it there, wouldn't want to change it. The problem is, when I log to my.opera.com and click the mail icon, the only thing I get is this:

"Opera

Your username (Alaknár) is valid.

Pamiętaj, aby zawsze logować się za pomocą swojej nazwy użytkownika, a nie adresu e-mail." (I'm using the Polish version).

So, my username is valid... By I can't get to my email page? smile I'd only use this mail account for RSS feeds in Opera browser so it wouldn't bother me if people couldn't write me because of that special character.

So here's the question - is it at all possible to get this account working? Or is it actually working (as in "I can configure it in Opera browser to get my RSS feeds") only without the webmail interface (which I don't need)?

Sorry if this isn't the appropriate place for issues like this, I couldn't find a support mail or site anywhere.

Johan Borgborg Thursday, June 21, 2012 1:14:43 PM

No, sorry, your mail account isn't even created before you have a valid user name. However, you should be able to subscribe to RSS feeds in the Opera browser without setting up a mail account. Just click the RSS icon in the address bar on a web page (for example this blog) and then select "Subscribe to this feed using Opera Mail" when the feed displays.

Unrealmirakulix Saturday, June 23, 2012 1:57:43 PM

nice plan.

PS: Could you please fix the displayed time in the speeddial preview?

-> 15.51 (central european) gets 2:51 PM...

areteichi Friday, June 29, 2012 8:44:49 AM

May I point out that there is one option that is left untranslated (i.e. remains in English) under the German interface? Under 'Rules' ('Regeln') in the settings, the option ("Do not discard message sent from my contacts") appears in plain English, while everything else is properly translated into German. I wouldn't dare to propose a translation for this missing option, as I myself am a German learner, but it would be nice to see consistency throughout the interface wink

Johan Borgborg Friday, June 29, 2012 10:00:36 AM

Yes, and there will be a few more untranslated strings for a little while when we introduce the new contacts interface. It's one of the shortcuts we allow ourselves as long as we haven't removed the Beta label whistle But yes, we prepare a new translation round which should fix these new strings.

Unrealmirakulix Thursday, July 5, 2012 12:20:15 PM

I think I found a bug:

when you choose to load images (external content) in mails from known (what ever this definition means) people, there is no difference to "always ask".

I manually added contacts and also tried to import vCards. No auto-loading of the external images. A bit annoying when reading newsletters...

down

Bucic Thursday, July 5, 2012 4:44:13 PM

I'm pretty sure my contacts interface doesn't look like the updated one.

Johan Borgborg Thursday, July 12, 2012 7:19:25 AM

Unrealmirakulix Saturday, August 11, 2012 11:36:35 AM

two bugs:

#1: loading images when contact is known/saved, doesn't work for me on newest final, nor snapshot on W7x64

#2: also the .... just opens the opera mail page but doesn't open compose and also doesn't copy the mail address in the text box.

;( Help please ;(
