My Opera Mail Team

Welcome to My Opera Mail Beta

Welcome to My Opera Mail Beta and the first post from the Mail Team!

From today, all My Opera accounts also have an @myopera.com e-mail address and you can try out our new mail service at https://mail.opera.com, just log in with the same user name and password you use for My Opera, Opera Link or Opera Unite.

Our goal is to make a fast and friendly mail service that is efficient and easy to use on any device, whether you prefer to access your e-mail from Opera Mini on a mobile phone (dedicated mobile interface), a tablet with touch interface (large, comfortable buttons) or a desktop computer (extensive keyboard shortcuts).

This is the first public release of the service and you can expect old features to be refined and new to be added both during and after the beta period. We'll announce news on this blog, so press that Subscribe button now wink

My Opera Mail Beta is brand new, but it is also based on the systems and experience of the FastMail.FM team that joined Opera last year.

Those who have already used FastMail.FM will recognize a few bits and pieces, but major parts of My Opera Mail Beta have been rewritten as an AJAX application to take advantage of modern browsers and speed up the entire experience.

One of the more interesting additions compared to FastMail is a feature we originally planned for the initial version of Opera's built-in mail client "M2" but that we never had time to complete before the release of Opera 7.0: Conversation view. Grouping all messages in a thread as a single page makes even more sense for a Web service than a native application, so we decided to put in the extra effort to support conversations across folders on our Cyrus IMAP servers.

The new system has been in closed beta for a few weeks already and one of our beta testers posted an entire collection of screen shots, but the best way to try it is to simply head over to https://mail.opera.com and play with it!

@Daniel Hendrycks Are you asking me? That's the one I'm asking about the web-mail? There's also a Mail feature if you look in the panels on the left. Just wondering if they're tied together?

Will http://operamail.com/ redirect to mail.opera.com soon?

Outskirter Friday, April 8, 2011 5:23:50 PM

@Chirpie: I use a mobile device exclusively. After trying IMAP4 in two different mobile e-mail clients, I found it too complicated to keep my folders in sync with the server, especially because my e-mail activity doesn't require enough categories to warrant more than a couple of folders, anyway.

Also, I like having my e-mail client clear messages from the mail server as soon as they're fully downloaded. In the case of Gmail, they're still up there in my Trash folder, so I log into the site once in a while to delete them permanently. This takes very little time. I'm a big fan of the KISS method; it stands for Keep It Simple, Stupid. lol

Cutting Spoonhellspork Friday, April 8, 2011 6:28:48 PM

Well there are several killer things that could be done:

1) Associate MyOpera file storage with MyOpera mail. Don't merge them, but make it easy to attach an uploaded file or photo gallery when composing a message.

2) Plan for mail integration in Opera Mobile, or perhaps build a dedicated widget for mail. Adding mail in Mini would be nice, but I don't know enough to judge the feasibility.

3) Assume that some users will be placing the mail website into Opera's sidebar. Shouldn't require much tinkering if already supporting mobile access. Actually may be fine as-is.

4) "Move attachment to storage" would be an awesome feature.

Will Opera Mail have a Polish translation soon?

perpetoom Friday, April 8, 2011 7:04:56 PM

Nice! Ability to grab emails from old accounts (ie. gmail) and tagging messages would be welcome..

BTW - Browsing https://mail.opera.com/ in google chrome* shows red screen with information that identity of this site could not be verified (ssl certificate problem).

The /mail/ one looks horrible right now.

Actually it looks very good in Panel yes So I've that one in Panel and the simple https://mail.opera.com on the personal bar bigsmile

You can set up any mail account with Opera's built in client, including of course this new My Opera Mail account. In the future, we'll make that even easier. So you have a choice on whether to read your My Opera Mail on a webpage (in Opera or in Firefox or in Safari etc) or in a mail client (in Opera or in Thunderbird or in Outlook etc).

That would be problematic for single-sign on. Just like Gmail is not actually on gmail.com...

That's a different service, not integrated with My Opera. You might ask about copying this new interface to that site though. But I wouldn't know the answer, maybe Johan knows smile

I hope fixing the issue can also open a way to making me (and other users with special characters in their username) become able to use Link and Unite. After all I was able to use Link until Unite came along. wink

Hmm interesting, I have had "_" in my username before Unite, I changed my username to eXtremo to make it work with unite when it was released. So it should work now because it is "eXtremo" right? But I get that error.

Looks great, I'll be waiting for a settings menu to change my sender's name. What's the disk space by the way? I don't see that info anywhere?

Ok, so I set up myopera mail account(hopefully right) in the built in Mail, and tried to send an email to my gmail account but it is still sitting in the outbox and not sending. As far as the server settings should I click the box 'Use Secure Connection(TLS)' in both incoming and outgoing servers. It's set up as an IMAP account.

Mimis Mum (MM)mimi_s_mum Friday, April 8, 2011 10:05:03 PM

Incoming: imap.myopera.com, port 993, TLS & "AUTH PLAIN".
Outgoing: smtp.myopera.com, port 587, TLS & "Auto".

I've meant that it myopera account would grab continuously (ie. every 30 minutes) messages from other accounts (ie. *@gmail.com, *@windowslive.com) and put them into myopera.com inbox with some custom tag (such feature is available in the gmail service) :]

What about making a SpeedDial icon that would display the number of new messages in the Inbox.
Even better would be if that speeddial also worked on mobile version so that we would be able to visit the page only when they are new messages (would be very helpful on slower connections/devices)

Some usability tips:

1. To show how many items there is in eache folder, that user could see if there is something in each of the folder.

2. Counter with items in each of the folder must distinguish between unreaded and readed items.

3. Add ability to clean spam & trash folder by clicking on dustpan/sweeper icon.

P.S. In general, look at Yandex.Mail ( http://mail.yandex.ru ) and look for some more usability tips.

Michelbudnyatski Saturday, April 9, 2011 8:42:40 AM

BTW, now when MyOpera account is not just login to another social network, but also email address is there some ability to change username in order to make it more suitible for email approaches.

EnricoEnrico89 Saturday, April 9, 2011 10:21:45 AM

A good idea is to implement the possibility to download in the myopera mail others email boxes via POP or IMAP. Like gmail, yahoo, hotmail...

Outskirter Saturday, April 9, 2011 2:12:01 PM

@Chirpie: No, POP3 can't manage remote folders on the server. However, incoming messages can be easily organized in local folders in the e-mail client. In fact, my client has filters that can move incoming messages to their appropriate folder. Currently I have one inbox for each of two accounts, and any incoming messages I want to keep go into a "saved" folder. Other than that, there's just an outbox, which also serves for draft messages.

Why is opera.com missing SPF records?

AAoprbrowser Saturday, April 9, 2011 3:08:49 PM

1. There is no settings page.
2. I need alias email addresses to use/test this service.

Seems pretty fast though.

Thanks.

AndréFillipe Saturday, April 9, 2011 3:19:56 PM

Your sign up form could be improved. It asks for an e-mail address, but:

- Is it asking me what address @opera.com I would like to create?
- Is it asking for another e-mail address?

The second one is the case, which is a little bit silly, no? What if I don't have one?

Hi

Your new email looks quite light and cool and very refreshing in feel. The loading speed is quite good. Your email could look more comfortable if you please consider these suggestions...
1) Tabs groups for reading multiple emails
2) Various Themes for dressing up.
3) Slideshow for picture attachments
4) Rich text signature.
5) Indrive Facility for storing docs and images.

Anyway it was a pleasant surprise that Opera has given by launching this new email service.

Thanks
Nanda Sendhivel

A lot of site do that. Helps with forgotten password retrieval and account issues. For the former at least, secret question(s) should be enough, but it all depends on the site.

It wasn't that difficult to get it working into the mailprogram of my Opera browser on my desktop as an Imap account (ooh, yes, I'm on Linux haha and that's real cool and fast with Opera. They seem to understand each other)

+1

I could understand "Junk" instead of "Junk Mail" though a little bit as "Junk" is the default spam folder in some mail clients. I still vote for "Spam" though as it matches M2 and is clearer on what it's for.

Should be "Sent" instead of "Sent Items" too, not just because it matches M2, but because "Items" isn't necessary for the description. Not sure on the reasoning there except maybe compat with OE's defaults.

Maybe it has to do with typical folder names on mobile mail clients?

Muttsfan Sunday, April 10, 2011 7:08:27 AM

darn, I haven't logged in a few days because I was busy, and I already missed a awesome announcement like this?

Furkan Eralpfurkaneralp Sunday, April 10, 2011 9:21:07 AM

The (smooth) scrolling in MyOpera mail with Opera is becoming sluggish when there are many messages (conversations) in the screen. Also, "reply" is quoting all the messages and they are not being shortened so all the messages are showed; it becomes a heavy load and maybe this is the bad scrolling performance, dunno.

(This scrolling issue is becoming a problem with some other sites too but here -my opera mail- it looks like a bigger problem. Ver. 2087)

Also, messages is not being refreshed when the mail page is opened. I use the mail tabs as "app tabs" but the MyOpera mail is not refreshing so everytime it has to be checked manually.
