Slow computers? A fix.
Bottom left on your keyboard is the little windows emblem.
Hold down the windows emblem and clear across the keyboard hit pause/break. (different on laptops)
Alternatively go to menu - control panel - system.
System page opens. Write down your ram and processor speed.
Low ram can be upgraded easy. Low processor can not be upgraded easily.
Write down your ram now. Ram is xyz gb of ram.
Click on - advanced tab
-settings for performance - its the first settings button.
Third button down is 'adjust for best performance'.
Click it so the dot appears at 'adjust for best performance'.
click apply - computer will think for a bit.
Top of this page is 'visual effects'. Next to it is 'advanced'. click the 'advanced' tab.
The dot next to programs should be checked then click, at the bottom, change.
Under the big box is "space available". This is the amount of space on your hard disc available. This is important b/c we need to use some of that space.
Ok remember the 'Ram' number you wrote down? Multiply it by 1.5. This is the amount we would like to use. If the "space available" is twice the amount of ram we need then go ahead and change the following - click on the dot 'custom size' then enter the number we just figured. Your ram x 1.5. So if you have 512 ram you would enter 512 x 1.5 = 768. change initial and max to 800 (768-no need to be exact exact)
-click set and were done here. click ok ok ok till all the windows are closed. sweet
Ok now to speed up your net...
open up internet explorer. go to www.opera.com and download opera. Install Opera and watch your net rock. Stop using internet explorer.
If you refuse....dont use toolbars. Toolbars are viruses. When you install programs watch the screens for the "install xyz toolbar?" - say no!
If you must internet explorer do the following:
top click 'tools' - go to internet options
window opens up. Theres three sections top, middle, bottom.
In the middle section on the far right is 'settings' - click settings.(you might get a message saying too much space -close it)
Go down to 'disc space to use' Whatever number is there change it to 50. yes 50. New computers come preset to 50. The old theory was.. nvm If you wish to know the reasoning message me.
Ok Now below 'disc space to use' click 'view files'.
Click edit (top left) - select all - hit delete on your keyboard or the red x at the top.
Dont be afraid. This is all your temporary internet files. Last week when you went to yahoo or aol and you saw that photo of Angelina Jolie? Its still here in this folder. So are things from a year ago and its slowing you down.
The computer may freeze for a bit. Its deleting a ton of garbage. The longer it takes the more good you are doing.
When it comes back close the folder 'temporary internet files'. Click ok on the settings page.
Now your back on 'internet options'. On the tabs across the top click 'connections'.
Connections opens up.
The top box should be empty. If you see some old dial up you used to use or something else you're not familiar with take it out.
To take it out click it once and click 'remove' on the right hand side.
(If you know what it is you know if you're still using it. If its a work computer and it says 'vpn' leave it alone)
Ok same page bottom right click 'lan settings'. A page opens up check 'automatically detect'.
Were done. Click ok and ok and your back on crappy internet explorer. (You really should use Opera)
But ok it should be much speedier.
