Rajesh Khanna - The Original Super Star of Indian Cinema.

Today we speak of movies that makes 100 and above crores at the box office and are declared blockbuster, but very few of us know that there was this superstar during 1970’s and 1980’s whose movies used to run for 100 weeks and more uninterrupted, and were re-released several times for the entertainment of movie-goers. That shining real star of 1970s and 1980’s was none other than Rajesh Khanna. Girls/Women used to get married to his photograph and his cars used to get kissed by desperate fans. He is also the only superstar to have had 15 hit movies on the trot. The real fact during 1970’s and 1980’s in Amritsar which has 16 theatres and once all the 16 theatres were playing his films. This has never happened in the history of cinema world that all the theatres in a town were playing the films of just one actor (Rajesh Khanna). He never had use the borrowed crutches to rule Bollywood

RAJESH KHANNA’S METEORIC RISE IN THE EARLY 70S WAS CRAFTED TO A LARGE EXTENT BY SOME MEMORABLE SONGS COMPOSED BY RAHUL DEV BURMAN AND SUNG BY KISHORE KUMAR. A MONTH AFTER THE DEATH OF INDIA’S FIRST SUPERSTAR, DEBASISH MAHAPATRA DECODES THE MUSICAL MAGIC OF THE TROIKA...
Rajesh Khanna and RD Burman during the making of Kaka’s home production Jai Shiv Shankar (1990). (Author’s collection)

What made Rajesh Khanna “the phenomenon”? Was it those crinkling eyes? The charismatic, warm smile? Was it that nod? Who knows?

And then, who knows why his superstardom, anointed by the film industry after delivering 15 blockbusters in 18 successive super-duper hits, went on a downslide from the mid-70s?

His disarming screen presence, freshness and simplicity began to wane, when the star overcame the artiste in him, bringing in its place a sense of complacency and smugness. The same (hand and head) gestures and mannerisms that had the audiences swooning earlier now appeared “puppet-like”, mechanical and calculated.

Even directors whose films Kaka had scored in at the box office, including bigwigs like Yash Chopra, did not want to repeat casting him because of his unpredictable manners and indiscipline. Though Yash had paid Rajesh the signing amount, Salim-Javed refused to part with the script of Deewar unless the “pig-headed phenomenon” was chucked out. Yash, embittered during the making of Daag, decided to go with Salim-Javed. And Amitabh walked in — the rest, as they say, is history.

Analysts can argue ad nauseam as to what could be the reason behind the rise and fall of the superstar. What one can’t take away, after all these years, are the immortal, lilting, romantic and melodious numbers, picturised on Kaka, most of which were sung by Kishore Kumar, composed by RD Burman (Pancham) and written by Anand Bakshi.

Incidentally, both Pancham and Kaka rose to superstardom with a common film in 1970. That was Kati Patang, and as if by providence, with the birth of these two superstars the resurrection of Kishore Kumar was also enabled.

It was during the making of Aradhana (1969), however, that the trio of Kishore, Pancham and Khanna would mould a bond of friendship and professional camaraderie. While Aradhana’s fresh and melodious music was composed by the legendary Sachin Dev Burman, there is a little story behind the composition of Roop Tera Mastana. Originally inspired by a Bengali ‘bhatiyali’ tune and scored by SD, it was on Pancham’s insistence that Kishore suggested an alteration in the number to Sachinda. Kishore sang a rhyme from his childhood days — “Ektu porey soshur baadi...deeye debo ghoda gadi”. With the changes incorporated, the result was an upbeat, contemporary, jazzy and erotic number, which fetched Kishore the Filmfare award for best male playback singer.

When Shakti Samanta selected Rajesh Khanna for Aradhana, Kishore insisted on meeting him, and observing the actor’s voice, mannerisms and gestures. He wanted to make sure that his voice and singing style would fit Rajesh’s persona to the hilt.
Author’s sketches of the legends Amitabh Bachchan, RD Burman and Rajesh Khanna

Rajesh once mentioned in an interview that, during the Aradhana days, Pancham had told him about a tune that he had composed, keeping him in mind and that he would use it if given a chance to compose. And finally he did. The song was Ye Jo Mohabbat Hai in Kati Patang (1970), which was the turning point in Pancham’s life. Samanta decided to give Pancham a break after seeing his dedication and contribution during Aradhana. Kati Patang became a landmark in Hindi cinema. The trio — Kishore, Kaka and Pancham — seemed tailor-made for each other. Pyar Diwana Hota Hai, Ye Jo Mohabbat Hai and Ye Shaam Mastani were all sung by Kishore, and were spectacular hits.

Amar Prem (1971) was a real showcase for Pancham’s musical genius, especially his flair at Indian music, effectively quashing his detractors who felt Pancham was more Westernised in his musical outlook. Kishore’s rendition of Chingari Koi Bhadke (hailed by purists and commoners alike), Kuch Toh Log Kahenge and Ye Kya Hua was superlative.

Pancham in an interview in Movie (published in February 1994, a month after his death) says: “Amar Prem has been my most inspired film. It was a challenge in more ways than one. The film was a hit in Bengali. So I had to make it even better with the Hindi version. I hit the bullseye with this film. Of course, there was a combination of several factors. Rajesh Khanna was magic in those days. He looked so good singing those songs, perhaps if Amitabh Bachchan had to sing all those songs then, they may not have been appreciated. His image was different. Those songs fitted Rajesh Khanna like a glove. Its songs were superhits and they remain my personal favourites.”

Incidentally, the maximum number of hit songs composed by Pancham and sung by Kishore (Kati Patang, Amar Prem, Namak Haraam etc) were also written by Anand Bakshi, an ex-army officer. Bakshi was destined to become a lyricist and carve for himself a special place in the history of Hindi film music.

Mere Jeevan Saathi (1972) was the first film that exposed the chinks in the armour. The first song that Pancham composed was rejected by both Rajesh Khanna and the director, Ravikant Nagaich. A disturbed Pancham came back with an alternative tune within 15 minutes. And O Mere Dil Ke Chain was born; penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri, Kishore added the sparkle. The film also featured the melancholic Deewana Leke Aaya Hai, and Kishore was at his yodelling best with Chala Jaata Hoon, a peppy and racy number that seemed tailor-made for Kaka. Pancham had delivered some of his best creations for Mere Jeevan Saathi, but a poor screenplay couldn’t salvage the film.

Namak Haraam (1973) witnessed the resurgence of the Pancham-Kishore-Anand Bakshi lucky charm. Diye Jalte Hain was a hummable ode to friendship, with simple lyrics, but it was Main Shayar Badnaam which took the laurels. It ranks among Pancham’s best scores and among Anand Bakshi’s most evocative lyrics.
Made for each other: Kishore Kumar and Rajesh Khanna

Raja Rani (1973), Humshakal (1974), Aap Ki Kasam (1974) had little to offer. The only exception being Aap Ki Kasam’s music. Pancham delivered a sparkling gem in the form of Zindagi Ke Safar Mein Guzar Jaate Hain. Anand Bakshi’s superlative lyrics and Kishore Kumar’s amazing rendition made this song an all-time classic. The music was simply magical with different sound patterns signifying changing seasons and time shift. It was sheer innovation by Pancham.

The most popular number from Aap Ki Kasam was Jai Jai Shiv Shankar. Rajesh Khanna had once mentioned in an interview that he had gone to a temple with Pancham. The clanging bells had a distinct sound and a peculiar rhythmic beat which caught Pancham’s attention. The result was Jai Jai Shiv Shankar — an all-time hit with revellers.

On the other hand, there were limited Kishore Kumar gems from other composers for Rajesh Khanna. Such as Laxmikant Pyarelal’s Mere Deewanepan Ki Bhi (Mehboob Ki Mehndi), Mere Naseeb Mein Ae Dost (Do Raaste), Mere Dil Mein Aaj Kya Hai (Daag), Aap Ke Anurodh Pe (Anurodh) etc. Also, Kalyanji Anandji’s Zindagi Ka Safar (Safar), Jeevan Se Bhari (Safar), Hemant Kumar’s Woh Shaam Kuchh Ajeeb Thi (Khamoshi) or Shankar Jaikishan’s Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhana (Andaz).

Interestingly, Rajesh wasn’t able to avail much of the creative partnership of the Gulzar-Pancham duo. The closest he could get was when Gulzar penned lyrics for Anand (music by Salil Chowdhury), Khamoshi (Hemant Kumar), Thodisi Bewafai (Khayyam) and Palkon Ki Chhaon Mein (Laxmikant Pyarelal). For Namak Haraam, Gulzar wrote the screenplay but no songs.

Ajanabee (1974) was a moderate success at the box office, but Pancham’s score was a chart-buster. Ek Ajnabee Haseena Se was an out-and-out romantic song, which Kishore excelled at. In Bheegi Bheegi Raaton Mein Pancham used asbestos sheets to create the effect of thunder in the beginning of the song. Hum Dono Do Premi had pre-recorded interludes as the musicians were on strike. Pancham even chipped in between the song — Hey Babu Kahan Jaibo Re.

Incidentally, the only song Pancham ever sang for Kaka was Duniya mein logon ko in Apna Desh (1972). A high-octane number with Pancham singing with amazing breathing patterns, this is a party favourite even today.

The ambitious Mehbooba (1976) by Shakti Samanta banked heavily on classical music, with masterpieces by Manna Dey, Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore. The piece-de-resistance however was Mere Naina Sawan Bhadon based on Raag Shivranjani. Kishore was reluctant to sing the number, saying it was beyond his capability. After a lot of persuasion by Pancham, Kishore agreed to hear Lata’s version first. After listening to it for a week, he finally recorded the song; the result was sheer magic. Kishore ranked it among his 10 favourites. Mehbooba though failed to strike gold, given an overweight Rajesh. Kaka’s tantrums also led to a rift between him and Pancham. This standoff forced Shakti Samanta to sign Laxmikant-Pyarelal for his next Rajesh venture — Anurodh. But despite a rich score, Anurodh failed to weave magic.
Music maestros: RD Burman and Kishore Kumar

It was finally in 1983 that Kishore Kumar received yet another Filmfare award for the Best Male Playback Singer for the song Agar Tum Na Hote, composed by Pancham for Agar Tum Na Hote. The film did just about okay.

In 1985, Kaka and Pancham came together again in the actor’s home production Alag Alag, directed by Samanta. At that time, Pakistani music had a strong influence on Hindi films, post Nikaah (1982). Ghulam Ali’s Chupke Chupke Raat Din was a big hit and set a trend compelling film producers to include Pakistani ghazals in their films. Pancham couldn’t help but comply with the producer’s wishes. The songs turned out mediocre with the exception of Kabhi Bekasi Ne Maara which was a direct take-off on Kabhi Khwaishon Ne from the Pakistani movie Mehrbani, sung by Ikhlaq Ahmad.

The other films that had the magical combo of Kishore-Rajesh-Pancham were Awaaz, Hum Dono (both 1984), Awara Baap (1985), Anokha Rishta (1986) and finally Shatru (1986). Sadly enough, none could come anywhere close to their predecessors. Kishore Kumar passed away on October 13, 1987, Pancham on January 4, 1994, and India lost her first superstar on July 18, 2012.

To quote from Anand Bakshi,

Phool khilte hain, log milte hain,

patjhad mein jo phool

murjhaa jaate hain,

wo bahaaron ke aane se khilte nahin.

kuchh log ik roz jo bichad jaate hain,

wo hazaaron ke aane se milte nahin.

umar bhar chahe koi

pukaara kare unka naam,

wo phir nahin aate...wo phir

nahin aate

Mohammed Rafi sings for Super Star Rajesh Khanna

The Legend Indian Singer - Mohammed Rafi and Super Star Rajesh Khanna of Indian Cinema

Mohd.Rafi sings for Romantic Icon Rajesh Khanna. Mohd. Rafi Sahab was also golden voice of Indian superstar Rajesh Khanna.

Raaz - 1967 :

In this mind-boggling hunting song from G.P.Sippy’s suspense thriller was directed by Ravindra Dave, which may also be considered the first notable film of the superstar. The young Rajesh Khanna was looking very smart, handsome and charming in the song with the magic voice of Mohd. Rafi. The song was two times in the film: first time in female voice by Lata Mangeshkar and second time in male voice by Mohammed Rafi that was picturised on Babita Shivadasani and Rajesh Khanna respectively.

Another Rafi-Lata duet from the film “Sochta Hoo Ke Tumhe Maine Kahi Dekha Hai Yaad Karta Hoo Magar Yaad Aata Nahin Hai” was also picturised on them. The music of the film was penned by Kalyanji-Anandji and lyrics of the song by Shamim Jaipuri. Thus, Rajesh Khanna started his career with the golden voice of Mohd. Rafi like Manoj Kumar (Shaheed, Do Badan) and Feroz Khan(Oonche Log, Ek Sapera Ek Lootera), though later on Kishore Kumar was recognised the voice of Super Star Rajesh Khanna.

Kalyanji-Anandji composed music for Rajesh’s debut film RAAZ and SACHAA JHUTHA (1970). The music of RAAZ was penned by Kalyanji-Anandji and lyrics by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, Qumar Jalalabadi, Gulshan Bawara, Shamim Jaipuri, Akhtar Romani & Noor Dewasi. In addition to the hunting Rafi number “Akele Hai Chali Aao Jaha Ho“, the other popular track from the film: “Sochta Hoo Ke Tumhe Maine Kahi Dekha Hai Yaad Karta Hoo Magar Yaad Aata Nahin Hai” by Rafi-Lata, “Dil Sambhale Sambhalta Nahin Aaj Tu Paas Aane Ki Dedo Izazat Hamein” by Mukesh-Lata was picturised on Rajesh Khanna and Babita.

The Rafi-Lata duet from Sachaa Jhutha “Yunhi Tum Mujhse Baat Karti Ho Ya Koi Pyar Ka Irada Hai” was picturised on Rajesh Khanna & Mumtaz. The other popular track of the film “Dil Ko Dekho Chehra Na Dekho, Chehere Ne Lakho Ko Luta“, “Meri Pyari Bahenian Banegee Dulhaniya” was sung by Kishore Kumar. Rajesh played dual role in Sachaa Jhutha under direction of Monmohan Desai for which he got his first Filmfare Best Actor Award in 1971 and the film was reprise in early 1990s as AFLATOON under direction of Gudu Dhanoa with his real life son-in-law Akshay Kumar.
Rafi-Rajesh Khanna and composer Laxmikant-Pyarelal:-

Laxmikant-Pyarelal had composed music in the lyric of Anand Bakshi for this combination in the films: DO RAASTE (1969), AAN MILO SAJANA (1970), MEHBOOB KI MEHNDI (1971) and HAATHI MERE SAATHI (1971). Raj Khosla’s golden jubilee hit Do Raaste was a great musical of HFM, which was released in December 1969 and run in theatres with Aradhana simultaneously. The songs of the film “Yeh Reshmi Zulfen Yeh Sharbati Aakhen” by Rafi, “Dil Ne Dil Ko Pukara Mulakath Ho Gayee” by Rafi-Lata was so popular which were picturised on Rajesh Khanna & Mumtaz, one of the best popular pair of Hindi Cinema.
Laxmikant, Pyarelal

Laxmikant, Pyarelal

The title song of film Aan Milo Sajana, “Rang Rang Ke Phool Khile Mauhe Bhai Mere Angana, Aab Aan Milo Sajana” by Rafi-Lata was picturised on Rajesh Khanna and Asha Parekh and the solo by Rafi “Koi Nazrana Lekar Aaye Hoon Main Deewana Tere Liye” is one the best and deliberate party song of Hindi Film Music. The other popular track of the film, “Achha Tu Hum Chalte Hain” and “Jawani O Diwani Tu Zindabad” was sung by Lata-Kishore & Kishore Kumar respectively.

The songs of Mehboob Ki Mehndi, “Yeh Jo Chilman Hai Dushman Hamari, Kitni Sharmilee Dulhan Hamari“, “Pasand Aa Gayee Hai Ek Kafir Hasia Umar Uski Soolah Baras Aur Say Mahina” solos by Rafi and “Itna To Yaad Hai Mujhe Ki Yunse Mulakat Huee” a duet by Rafi-Lata was also popular which were picturised on a rare pair of Hindi Cinema, Rajesh Khanna and Leena Chandravarkar, again they will set to pair up in a TV serial “Bhabhima”. The other popular track of the film “Mere Diwanepan Ki Bhi Dawa Nahin” and “Jane Kyon Log Mohabbat Kiya Karte Hain” was sung by Kishore Kumar & Lata Mangeshkar respectively.

Above all the stand out high pitch song “NAFRAT KI DUNIYA KO CHOD KAR PYAR KI DUNIYA MEIN KHUSH REHNA MERE YAAR” from Haathi Mere Saathi which totally supersedes all lovely Kishore numbers from the film with emotional singing by our all time great Mohammed Rafi Sahab. It was one of the best background songs of HFM in the climax of the film which was picturised on superstar Rajesh Khanna after killing of his elephant by villains which was the central character of the film.
Rafi-Rajesh Khanna and composer S.D.Burman:-

Dada Burman had composed music for this combination in only one film that is Rajesh’s first hit “ARADHANA” which made him a star. After recordings of two duets, S.D. Burman became ill and his real life son and assistant, R.D. Burman took over the charge of recordings who hired his friend Kishore Kumar to sing the two solos “Mere Sapnon Ki Rani Kab Aayegee Tu” and “Roop Tera Mastana Pyar Mera Deewana” which led to Kishore’s credentials. The two popular Rafi-Lata duets from the film, “Gun Guna Rahe Hain Bhawarein” and “Baaghon Mein Bahar Hai” were picturised on Rajesh Khanna & Sharmila Tagore & Rajesh Khanna & Farida Jalal respectively. The theme song of the film, “Sapna Hogi Teri Aradhana” was sung by S.D. Burman himself which was in background.
Mohd Rafi with S.D.Burman, Hasrat and Vijay Anand

Mohd Rafi with S.D.Burman, Hasrat and Vijay Anand
Rafi-Rajesh Khanna and composer R.D.Burman

R. D. Burman had composed music for this combination in the films: BAHARON KE SAPNE (1967), THE TRAIN (1970), SHEHZADA (1972), HUMSHAKAL (1974), BANDALBAAZ (1977), and PHIR WOHI RAAT (1980).

The theme song “Zamane Ne Mare Jawan Kaise Kaise” from Baharon Ke Sapne is the beginning of Rafi-Rajesh-R.D.Burman combination which ends with the song “Aa Gaye Yaro Jeene Ke Din, Khele Khane Pene Ke Din” from Phir Wahi Raat.

Rose Movies’s The Train is the best film of this combination and romantic number “Gulabi Ankhen Jo Teri Dekha Sharabi Yeh Dil Ho Gaya” by Rafi & “Mujhse Bhala Yeh Kajal Tera Nain Base Din Rain” by Rafi-Lata was so popular, which were picturised on one time pair Rajesh Khanna and Nanda.

The Rafi-Lata duet “Kahe Ko Bulaya Mujhe Balama Pyar Mein Naam Se” from Humshakal was superb. Rafi Saheb was also the voice of Rajesh Khanna in the duet with Lata “Naghma Hamara” from the film Bundalbaaz, the only other film directed by Rebel Star Shammi Kapoor after Manoranjan.
Rafi-Rajesh Khanna and composer Ravi:-

Ravi composed music for Bahar Film Combined’s DOLI (1969) starring Rajesh Khanna and Babita in the lyrics of Rajinder Krishan. The Rafi-Asha Bhosle duet “Sajna Saath Nibhana” was picturised on Rajesh Khanna, Babita & Prem Chopra and solo by Rafi “Danton Tale Dabakar Hooth Aakhen Karke Bari Bari Kha Jayeegi Mujko Aise Dekh Rahi Hai Khadi Khadi” was picturised on Rajesh & Babita. Mahendra Kapoor sang the title song of the film “Doli Chadh Ke Dulhan Sasural Chali” and “Aaj Pila De Saqi“.
Mohd Rafi with Shakeel and Ravi

Mohd Rafi with Shakeel and Ravi
Rafi-Rajesh Khanna and composer Naushad :-

Naushad used the voice of Rafi to playback for Rajesh Khanna in Sultan Ahmed’s multicast film DHARAM KANTA (1981) starring Raaj Kumar, Waheeda Rahman, Rajesh Khanna, Reena Roy, Jeetendra, Sulachana Pandit and Amjad Khan in dual role. The songs from the film: “Yeh Gotey Dar Lahenga Nikele Jaab Chaal Se” by Rafi-Asha was picturised on Rajesh Khanna & Reena Roy in a train and “Duniya Chhoote Yaar Na Chhote Dil Ki Dharam Kante Par Dekha Pyar Ka Palla Bhari Hai” by Mohd. Rafi & Bhupinder was picturised on Rajesh Khanna & Jeetendra riding horse. Another Rafi-Asha duet from the film “Tera Naam Liya Dil Tham Liya” was picturised on Jeetendra & Sulachana Pandit. The lyric of the songs was penned by all time favourite lyricists Majrooh Sultanpuri. It was the last notable film of the composer Naushad and Naushad-Rafi matchless combination which was started with film the Pehle Aap (1944) and perhaps of the Rafi-Rajesh combination.
Rafi-Rajesh Khanna and composer Bappi Lahiri:-

Bappi Lahiri had also used the golden voice of Rafi Sahab for Rajesh Khanna in a qawwali in the film Suraag (1980).

An account of popular Rafi gems from different films picturised on Rajesh Khanna: -
SL No. Year Film Song Music Lyrics
1 1967 Raaz Akele Hain Chale Aao Kalyanji Anandji Shamim Jaipuri
2 1969 Do Raaste Yeh Reshmi Zulfen Laxmikant Pyarelal Anand Bakshi

Mohammed Rafi and Rajesh Khanna both were the ICONS of Hindi Cinema born in Punjab, former one was the first recognised playback singer of Hindi Cinema who dominated HFM from 1949 to 1969 and then to 1980 in second rank after popularity and emerging of Kishore Kumar in early 1970s and later one was the first officially declared superstar of Hindi Cinema who had 15 consecutive hit films in 5 years from 1969 to 1973. Recently, Rajesh Khanna got the “Phalke Legend Actor Award” on 139th birth Anniversary of Dhundi Raj Govind Phalke, the father of Indian Cinema, popularly known as Dada Saheb Phalke. Rafi Sahab playback for Rajesh Khanna in countable songs with limited films: Raaz, Baharon Ke Sapne, Do Raaste, Doli, Aradhana, Sachaa Jhutha, The Train, Aan Milo Sajna, Mehboob Ki Mehndi, Shehzada, Humshakal, Bandalbaaz, Phir Wohi Raat, Suraag and Dharam Kanta. Though Rafi-Rajesh Khanna permutation is very little but too rich and wealthy in regards to piece of music and the work of composers like Kalyanji-Anandji, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, S.D.Burman, R.D.Burman, Ravi, Bappi Lahiri and Naushad are everlasting.
Rajesh Khanna

Rajesh Khanna

Even though several of the popular songs picturized on Rajesh Khanna were sung by Kishore Kumar, the songs like “Yeh Reshmi Zulfe Yeh Sharbati Aakhen” from DO RAASTE, “Gulabi Aakhen Jo Teri Dekha Sharabi Yeh Dil Ho Gaya” from THE TRAIN, “Koyi Nazrana Lekar Aaya Dewana Tere Liye” from AAN MILO SAJNA and “Yeh Jo Chilman Hai” from MEHBOOB KI MEHNDI sung by Rafi Saheb for romantic icon Rajesh Khanna are real diamonds with ceremonial melody and which are still popular and long lasting.

The last popular song of the Naushad-Rafi matchless combination from Dharam Kanta which was picturised on Rajesh Khanna and Reena Roy: -

Asha:Â Yeh Gotey Dar Lahenga Niklu Jaab Daal Ke 3

Churiya Chal Jayee Meri Matwali Chaal Pe 2

Rafi:Â Â Jalwaee Phir Dekh Gori Meri Bhi Chaal Ke 2

Sunri Baan Jayee Teri Mere Rumal Se 2

Asha: Deerdar Deerdar……………

Ek Tu Babu Shishe Jaise Chikni Meri Jawani, Dooji Umar Mastani 2

Ho…. Meri Badan Par Aise Phisle Teri Nazar Deewani, Jaise Jhalakta

Pani Pani

Aankhiya Milana Humse, Chalia Sambhal Ke 2

Churiya Chal Jayee Meri Matwali Chal Pe

Rafi:Â Chunri Baan Jayee Teri Mere Rumal Se

Rafi:Â Aaj Hamari Ek Nazar Ne Kiya Aafat Kar Dali Dekh Zara Matwali 2

Kaha Kaha Se Masti Teri Kurti Reshamwali, Jhalake Badan Ki Lali Lali

Tu Bhi Kamal Ki Hai Hum Bhi Kamal Ke 2

Chunri Ban Jayee Teri Mere Roomal Se

Asha: Churiya Chal Jayee Meri Matwali Chaal Pe

Asha: Dirdar Dirdar ………………….

Maan Ke Chor Nahin Chal Ne Du, Aaj Tuhmari Chori, Main Albeli Chodi 2

Rafi: Main Tu Udanlu Aankhon Se Kajal, Kahe Khuli Ho Gori, Dono Aankhiyan Tori 2

Asha: Aise Ko Rakhti Hoon Main Shishoo Mein Daal Ke 2

Churiya Chal Jayee Meri Matwali Chaal Pe

Rafi:Â Chunri Baan Jayee Teri Mere Rumal Se……………….

Music Director : Kalyanji Anandji
Movie : Raaz - 1967
Song picturised on Babita & Super Star Rajesh Khanna.

Lyrics :

Sochta Hu Ke Tumhe Mene Kahi Dekha Hai
kya soch rahe ho tum
nahi kuch nahi

sochta hu ki maine tumhe dekha hai
yaad karta hu mager yaad nahi aata
mere humraj mujhe tumne vahi dekha hai
dil jaha hose me
rah kar bhi bahk jata hai
jane kya baat hai
hum jab mila karte hai
dil me chupake se
koi chot ubhar aati hai
dil se dil milte hai
afsane bana karte hai
or takdir mohabbat ki savar jati hai

apne chehere pe mere
khawab paresa ki tarah
aaj in reshami julafo ko machal jane do
dil me uthte hue jasba ke tufa ki tarah
aaj har khawab hakikat me badal jane do

vo jo ehasas halka sa
kya tum gair nahi
aaj vo ek yaki banta nazar aata hai
kho diya jo kabhi yaad ki surat me kahi
aaj vo pyar mujhe milta nazar aata hai
aaj vo pyar mujhe milta nazar aata hai

Lyrics :

Yunhi Tum Mujhse Baat Karti Ho Lyrics

Yunhi tum mujhse baat karti ho - (2)
Ya koi pyar ka irada hai
Adayein dil ki janata hi nahi
Mera humdam bhi kitana sada hai
Yunhi tum mujhse baat karti ho.

Roz aati ho tum khayalon mein, - (2)
Zindagi mein bhi meri aa jao,
Beet jaye na ye sawalon mein,
Is jawani pe kuchh taras khao,
Haal-e-dil samajho sanam - (2)
Kahenge munh se na hum,
Hamari bhi koi maryada hai.
Adayein dil ki janata hi nahi,
Mera humdam bhi kitana sada hai.
Yunhi tum mujhse baat karti ho.

Bholepan mein hai wafa ki khushbu, - (2)
Tujh pe sab kuchh na kyun lutaau main
Mera betaab dil ye kehata hai,
Tere saye se lipat jaoon main,
Mujhse ye mel tera - (2)
Na ho ek khel tera,
Ye karam mujhpe kuchh ziyada hai.
Yunhi tum mujhse baat karti ho
Ya koi pyar ka irada hai
Adayein dil ki janata hi nahi

Ban gayi ho meri sada ke liye - (2)
Ya mujhe yunhi tum banati ho
Kahin baahon mein na bhar lu tumako
Kyon mere hausale badhati ho
Hausale aur karo, hausale aur karo,
Paas aake na daro
Dil na todenge apana wada hai

Yunhi tum mujhse baat karti ho.
Ya koi pyar ka irada hai
Adayein dil ki janata hi nahi
Mera humdam bhi kitana sada hai
Yunhi tum mujhse baat karti ho.

Mukesh sings for Super Star Rajesh Khanna of Indian Cinema

Mukesh sings for Super Star Rajesh Khanna of Indian Cinema

Mukesh has sung few songs for Super Star Rajesh Khanna and all of them are great songs.

Songs :

1) Song Title : Maine tere liye hi saat rang ke sapne

http://youtu.be/SC8DuvNCjbY
Movie : Anand - 1971
Singer : Mukesh
Lyricist : Gulzar
Music Director : Salil Chaudhary
Song picturised on Super Star Rajesh Khanna.
Star Cast : Super Star Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Sumita Sanyal, Ramesh Deo & Seema Deo.

Super Star Rajesh Khanna plays the character of a cancer patient in this movie, he knows he’s going to die and has just a couple of months left to live. But he doesnt let that dampen his spirits. On the contrary, he tries living his life to the fullest. I wont start with the dialogues all over again. I wont be able to stop at one or two if I do. I’ve seen this movie so many times but I was never sure who this song was actually meant for (in fact never thought about it). When he gets his jhola and refers before starting the second antara, there’s a hint of sadness, loneliness in his eyes. He doesnt have a heroine paired opposite to him here though he mentions a girl who he was in love with. Is he thinking of her while singing this song or is he singing this to himself, to his life. Now the more I listen to it the more I feel it’s Anand’s life from his point of view. Both Mukesh and Super Star Rajesh Khanna have done an outstanding job and brought out the right emotions in this song.

Music Director : Salil Chaudhary

Star Cast : Super Star Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Sumita Sanyal, Ramesh Deo & Seema Deo.

It’s quite a strange thing that Mukesh has sung two songs for Super Star Rajesh Khanna in the same movie which are very top songs. This is the only time we see Anand (Super Star Rajesh Khanna) sad, weak and vulnerable in the movie. It’s so poignant – the setting sun, the longing : longing for life and what couldn’t be his, there’s so much of sadness in it and yet it’s so beautiful and so soothing.

3) Song Title : Jis gali mein tera ghar na ho baalma

http://youtu.be/o6niIzcjGa0
Movie : Kati Patang - 1970
Singer : Mukesh
Lyricist : Anand Bakshi
Music Director : R.D. Burman
Song picturised on Asha Parekh & Super Star Rajesh Khanna

Another favourite Mukesh-on-Rajesh Khanna song of mine. I grew up listening to this song but saw it for the first time only while watching the movie. And Kati Patang is among the movies I saw right after Amar Prem. And this was the first time I was listening to Mukesh and watching Rajesh Khanna on screen, it kind of felt odd. He declares his love to his best friend’s widow, with a style and a charm that was uniquely his. Any girl would be on cloud nine listening to someone sing such beautiful poetry to her, but Asha, impersonating her friend, holds herself back but that doesnt discourage him a bit.

4) Song Title : Phool aahista pheko

http://youtu.be/J_RLTi5ufCI
Movie : Prem Kahani - 1975
Singer : Mukesh & Muskes.
Lyricist : Anand Bakshi
Music Director : R.D. Burman.
Song picturised on Super Star Rajesh Khanna, Mumtaz & Shashi Kapoor.

This is one movie I’ve never been able to get hold of till now. But the songs, be it cheerfully romantic title track or this one, they are just terrific. And the exchange of sher-o-shayaris before the song is masha-allah!

5) Song Title : Zubaan pe dard bhari

http://youtu.be/0qTmusL11e0
Movie : Maryada - 1971
Singer : Mukesh & Lata Mangeshkar
Lyricist : Anand Bakshi
Music Director :
Song picturised on Super Star Rajesh Khanna

Mukesh’s voice is usually referred to as dard-bhari awaaz. And we all know, he was the best when it came to bringing out the sorrow. Nobody can sing tragic songs like him, one of the main reasons why I have resisted him for so many years. And here he is singing Zubaan pe dard bhari. I wonder if he was roped in to sing this song because of the lyrics. But whatever it may be, this song wouldn’t have been the same if somebody else had to sing it. I dont remember much of this movie (probably because I didnt find it all that great) except for the fact that Mala Sinha was in a double role. I have vague memories of Raj Kumar wandering with a cage, and just Chup ke se dil de de and this song.

6) Song Title : Dil sambhale sambhalta nahin

http://youtu.be/h81IOyTjySA
Movie : Raaz - 1967
Singer : Mukesh
Lyricist : Anand Bakshi
Music Director : Kalyanji Anandji
Song picturised on Super Star Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan.

This is one hell of a romantic song (Mukesh doesnt sing only dard-bhare songs) and a very catchy one. It’s one of those let-me-go shaam dhalne lagi songs which I totally love. Such beautiful background (blue sky spotted with fluffy white clouds, snow-capped mountains glistening, greenery, cattles grazing) , two very good looking people romancing onscreen and two of the greatest singers singing it for them – all one has to do is just sit back and enjoy and let it’s beauty sink in. They sound so helplessly in love and that just adds to the cuteness factor of this song.

7) Bina Badra Ke Bijuria

http://youtu.be/azYclDkkGp8
Singer : Mukesh
Lyricist : Anjaan
Music Director :Kalyanji Anandji
Song picturised on Anju Mahendru, Mumtaz & Super Star Rajesh Khanna

Lyrics :

Naa To Aaj Barasaat Kaa Mausam, Binaa Badaraa Ke Bijuriyaa

mu : naa to aaj barasaat kaa mausam naa kahi chhaa_i badariyaa
phir bhi more jiyaraa me chamake are tham-tham ko_i bijuriyaa
ko : vaa-vaah-vaah toharaa javaab naahi

mu : binaa badaraa ke bijuriyaa kaise chamake
ko : ho binaa badaraa ke bijuriyaa kaise chamake
mu : kaise chamake ko_i puchhe re hamase
ko : kaise chamake ko_i puchhe re hamase
mu : ho binaa badaraa ke
ko : ho binaa badaraa ke

mu : raaho me jab gori nayanaa milaaye ke
ko : nayanaa milaaye ke
mu : muskaaye ghunghataa me mukhadaa chhipaaye ke
( to mar jaa_en ) -2 ham to qasam se qasam se
mu : binaa badaraa ke
ko : ho binaa badaraa ke
mu : kaise chamake
ko : ho binaa badaraa ke

mu : baithe ho jab mithe sapane sajaaye ke
ko : sapane sajaaye ke
mu : aise me haule se paas kabhi aaye ke
( jo bichhavaa ) -2 bajaaye de gori chham se qasam se
mu : binaa badaraa ke
ko : ho binaa badaraa ke
mu : kaise chamake
ko : ho binaa badaraa ke

Chevrolet Apsara Awards 2012 - Super Star Rajesh Khanna

Super Star Rajesh Khanna at the 7th Chevrolet Apsara Awards 2012 Red Carpet in Yashraj Studio, Mumbai on 25th Jan 2012.

The 7th Chevrolet Apsara Awards 2012 powered by Venus Soap saw a glittering, star-shimmering event held at Mumbai’s plush Yashraj Studios. The Film & Television Producers Guild of India and Wizcraft International Entertainment announced its much awaited winners for the finest talents in Film & Television for the year 2011.

The red carpet was rolled out as stars and celebrities walked down to celebrate the greatest and the best in Hindi Cinema & Television. This was one day in the history of Bollywood when stars sashayed stardom, dressed in their classiest, gorgeous best. The 7th Chevrolet Apsara Awards 2012 ceremony paraded the who’s who of the industry. With the legendary stars along with new league of actors emerging in Bollywood, this night got hotter!

The original superstar, Rajesh Khanna, was seen in all his glory at the recently held Apsara Awards 2012 in Mumbai recently. Dressed in his trademark white starched kurta-pyjama with a maroon waistcoat, Rajesh regaled the audiences with some of his legendary dialogues of the 70s and 80s hits. “Main derr se aata nahi hun lekin kya karu, der ho jaati hai. Isliye maafi ka haqdar hu, agar phir bhi kisine na maaf kiya ho toh main yahi kehna chahta hu ‘Humko maafi dedo saahib’” was the dialogue that received maximum applause from the audience. As he was being felicitated by Ramesh Sippy, President of the Guild, Rajesh found it ironic that it was Ramesh’s father, GP Sippy that gave him his first break with Andaaz, and whom he fondly referred to as his ‘ann-daata’ that set him off on his journey from being an actor to a star and ultimately a superstar.

Life Time Achievement Award - 2008 for Super Star Rajesh Khanna

Super Star Rajesh Khanna's Life Time Achievement Award at the 10th International Indian Film Academy Awards in Macau on June 13, 2009

Thanks Babumoshai

Indian Cinema's Super Star Rajesh Khanna was at his dramatic best when he received the lifetime achievement trophy at the IIFA awards from his Anand co-star Amitabh Bachchan.

Super Star Rajesh Khanna, kept referring to Big B as "babumoshai", in the manner in which he addressed Bachchan in their 1971 heartwarming hit Anand.

It took me 40 years and 180 films to get this IIFA Life time Achievement award-along journey I must say. I am very grateful to IIFA, Wizcraft, committee members and babumoshai. Babumoshai, thank you very very much, "Khanna said in his acceptance speech.

"Life should be big, not necessarily long, and my babumoshai is living life kingsize. (Look) from where to where he has reached in so many years. We started with Anand and today we are on this platform. He is very dear to me, he is my babumoshai," he said.

Babu

Super Star Rajesh Khanna's Babu - 1985

Introduction :

Babu is a 1985 film starring Super Star Rajesh Khanna in the lead supported by Hema Malini, Mala Sinha and Rati Agnihotri. Music is by Rajesh Rosahn. It is a remake of a Tamil film directed by A.C. Trilogchander from 1971 with the same name starring Shivaji Ganeshan, which in itself was a remake of the 1965 Malayalam film Odayil Ninnu (film).

Summary :

Babu is a young man who works as a rickshaw puller and he has fallen in love with Kammo. His only true friend is Shambu Nath. One day he helps Shankerlal and his family and in return Shankerlal invites him to his house. Instantly the whole family including Shankerlal's wife and Pinky both begin to shower love on Babu. Bbau having led a tough childhood feels very ecstatic and feels grateful to Shankerlal on having provided him food, clothes and more importantly respect given to him.Meanwhile a goon in the village rapes Kammo and Babu kiils him and thereby lands in jail. After his release he finds Pinky begging in the streets and then he gets shocked as to how a rich girl has been forced to beg. Then he realises that now Pinky's mother is a widow. His sole aim now becomes to help this widow and her child. He gives up his personal life, drives a hand-drawn rickshaw, saves some money, so that he can buy provisions for them, as well as send the child, Pinky, to a decent school. Pinky then grows up and later starts disliking Babu. The rest of the story is how Pinky realises her folly later on, how Pinky's mother feels indebted to Babu for having helped them in return for one nights shower of affection on Babu by Shankerlal.

This song has two versions. The happy version shows Super Star Rajesh Khanna (playing a hand rickshaw puller) pulling a hand rickshaw thoughout the city of Calcutta with a young girl seated on the rickshaw. Super Star Rajesh Khanna, who was once treated well by the family of the girl was repaying for that by helping her and her by then widowed mother to survive and come up in life.

The sad version of the song takes place towards the end of the movie when that girl has grown up to become Rati Agnihotri and who has come up in life largely because of Super Star Rajesh Khanna.

This lovely song is sung by Kishore Kumar. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Rajesh Roshan.
