Who excites you. Seriously who?

, ,

Increasingly, i'm becoming more aware of how a lot of things around me tends to set me brooding.

One such incident occured today when i was skimming through the feeds on my facebook page.

One dear friend of mine had posted about how elated he was that a renowned preacher cum motivational speaker was visiting Ghana.

I must admit i was quite pleased myself when i saw the ad. on TV announcing this forthcoming event with this renowned motivational speaker. And then the thought hit me...BANG!

Wondering the thought that hit me? Well, it was this seemingly innocuous thought: Will you be this excited if it was announced Jesus was visiting your hood?

It then it hit me that i will dread that news(at least, in my present state)...Ouch! :-(

I'm sure my 'spiritual' brethren will be yelling, "Yeah, i'm gonna excited!", but i felt differently because of the sin i know to be present in my life which i grapple with daily and struggling to repent(Have mercy on me Lord!).

I've come to notice how we sometimes delude ourselves into thinking we're something when in reality, that may not be the case. The heart is truly decietful(Jer.17:9) so some introspection will be in order. The Bible teaches that those anticipating the return of our savior keeps themselves pure(1Joh3:3).

Though i do not think it's a sin to be happy about our mentors(in fact, 1Thes.5:12 says to honor elders), the Bible says our pleasures/interests lie where treasure is(Matt.6:19 see also Col.3:1-3).

So before you answer, take time to ponder: Who really excites you. Seriously, who?

Nana Poku writes: Well I presume that that which is tangible appears rational and gratifying. Hence, all humans have a much higher tendency to relate or react to instances which provides them with instant satisfaction than otherwise. I believe one can easily fathom the the excitement upon hearing good news which has been experienced previously or by others. It's human nature. On the other hand, how do you create that feeling of excitement to circumstances never experienced before? Although we have come to believe with faith and reason, the value of Christianity, the expectation we attach to meeting our Savior sadly declines in comparison to another leader whom we can still have a tangible relationship with. The truth is, we shouldn't be ashamed of this. We should rather acknowledge how our feelings dominate over our beliefs and find measures to balance the order. Feelings aren't suppose to be interwoven with beliefs. For instance, if we were to gratify most of our "good feelings", then we would have been raging war against our beliefs (Galatians 5:17). Lastly, lets consider this simple analogy. Your dad comes home everyday not giving you your birthday gift; a bicycle. Few days later, you here your favorite uncle is visiting. This uncle of yours always has a package for you anytime he visits. It can be inferred from this situation that, you'll have a feeling of excitement towards your uncle's coming in comparison to that of your dad. This feeling shouldn't be categorized as a priority of choice over your dad. Its an indication of your humanity.

interesting analogy Nana...but wouldn't you agree that a possible reason we'll be underwhelmed is not just because we haven't had a palpable experience with Jesus but because we do not fully appreciate what he did for us?

Nana Poku writes: Of course we fully appreciate it. Otherwise, we wouldn't have been defending our faith with all our might whereas no life would have been precious. The sum of our actions and values depict our acknowledgement to what he has done for us. However, the fact still remains. Acts of humanity are there to remind us that we are still humans with feelings.

hmm, you make a good point but it still strikes me as incongruous to "fully appreciate" someone and then not feel a certain kind of fondness for such a one! it smacks of ingratitude to me.

anyway, thanks for the comments. you've given me a new thought for another post :-D
