Johnny Come Lately

, ,

Last week was a very cold week for me…literally! For the uninitiated, imagine yourself in an air-conditioned room with the fan set to maximum speed. Yep, that’s exactly how it felt like. Being the first time I’m travelling outside of my home country, it was quite an experience. The irony of it all is that, amidst the cold, some ladies were dressed down in skimpy skirts and sleeveless tops. You can imagine how gawked at them with my Johnny-come-lately countenance. The effect of the cold weather on my limbs gave me a palpable appreciation of the word ‘numb’. I’m just hoping I didn’t make my greenhorn status too obvious.

The flight was uneventful yet enjoyable save that one obnoxious incident of someone breaking wind. Trust me, it wasn’t pleasant. The view from above was breathtakingly magical! Seeing clouds like little puffs of smoke over a long stretch and getting to see the sun rise for the first time like it’s often depicted in desktop wallpapers was simply beautiful. Mountainous and hilly ridges from above only appear like blobs than can be picked with the hand and with small water bodies snaking their way amid them. The sea looked like one dark endless expanse dotted with lights from ships, boats and canoes at night.

The people were no different. They were just that; People! But I did observe some briskness in their movements. It was as if people were always in a hurry to get to their destination. It left me wondering: could it be they were walking briskly in order to mitigate the effects of the cold weather on their bodies or was it just a part of their regular working milieu? I’m tempted to think it’s a bit of both and more so the latter given how developed they are. Though I do not have a compressive overview of their history, if judgement can be made from mere appearances, then they do appear to be a serious minded people but then again, I’m only making conjectures based on intuition and nothing empirical. How I wish it were so in my country.

With regard to food, they didn’t appear to eat much at a sitting yet often nibbled on some snacks from time to time throughout the day. Was this because they had such a wide assortment to choose from at every meal setting or was it because their food often appeared to be parboiled? Whatever the reason(s) may be, I found their food mostly colorful and looking nutritious. I wished though their steak was tenderer.

On the whole, it was a good trip with lots of new information for assimilation and for the betterment of my job prospects. Time to put my freshly acquired knowledge to work and make some gains!
