If you check out the basic definition of the term, grout is a thin mortar that is used to fill the spaces in masonry. For our purposes, we will restrict our discussion to the grout that we use on the tiles in our homes. They are the ones that glue the tiles together, filling up the small void in between them. They basically keep the tiles in place.
Do not mindlessly pick the first grouting material that you find, and do not just wantonly apply it either. Consider such things as the composition of your grouting material, as well as the look of the hardened finish. If you just choose by the by, the finish might look downright silly. It may be doing its job as grout, but physical appearance is important in these matters as well.
For this reason, many people avoid the completely sealed grout. While it turns out to be non-porous, it also bears the side effect of looking like rubber in between your precious tiles. Instead, the more traditional type of grout is preferred. They just use a grout sealer after so that the contaminants are left out.
One other thing that you'll find yourself considering when grouting your tiles is the choice to have them dyed. By adding color to it, the normally white grout won't age too fast by dulling in color. When you choose this, however, you have to be careful when you're cleaning your grout. Some dyeing methods shyly fade off when met with an intimidating detergent.
In any case, grout will begin to look old faster than the tiles themselves. If you clean often, it'll fade, but if you don't clean, it'll turn brown. But that doesn't mean you should regrout often. Rather, just choose the right grouting material for you, and call grout cleaners if cleaning it becomes unmanageable. They can perform the job and make your grout look new again, even on the most ill maintained ones.
