Saintis Inggris Beri Penghargaan Ilmuwan Muslim

LONDON--Nama baik Islam terukir di kalangan saintis Inggris. Hari ini, Kamis (8/10), seorang profesor ahli sejarah dan peradaban Islam, Salim Al Hassani, dianugerahi penghargaan oleh perkumpulan saintis Inggris atas kiprahnya di bidang akademik. Guru besar asal Universitas Manchester itu dianggap gigih mempromosikan pengembangan ilmu dan teknologi dalam peradaban Islam.

Dalam 20 tahun terakhir, Profesor Hassani mengabdikan dirinya untuk meneliti peradaban Islam di abad ke-7 hingga abad ke-17 di India, Cina, Spanyol, juga Timur Tengah. Hasil penelitiannya ini memberi banyak pengetahuan mengenai sejarah Islam di kalangan akademisi Inggris.

Penghargaan asosiasi saintis Inggris bernama British Science Association ini diberikan setiap tahun kepada tokoh yang dianggap berperan besar mempromosikan keterbukaan ilmiah di masyarakat. Penerima penghargaan itu juga merupakan tokoh yang mendorong dan menginspirasi kaum muda untuk tertarik menekuni kajian sain dan teknologi.

Hasil penelitian panjang itu kemudian dituangkannya dalam buku kumpulan penemuan di dunia Islam. Saat ini dia menjadi pemimpin redaksi penerbitan buku sejarah berjudul '1001 Invention: Muslim Heritage in Our World' (1001 Penemuan: Pelestarian Kebudayaan Islam di Dunia). Buku ini mengupas lebih dalam mengenai penemuan yang muncul dalam ribuan tahun peradaban Islam di bidang sosial, sain, dan teknologi.

Dia berniat untuk menyumbangkan buku tersebu kepada dunia pendidikan di Inggris. Rencananya, dia akan menyiapkan 3.000 eksemplar buku tersebut untuk dibagikan secara gratis kepada sekolah-sekolah di negara tersebut.

Saat memberi sambutan dalam penganugerahan penghargaan tersebut, Presiden British Science Association, Lord May, mengungkapkan bahwa ketertarikannya pada sejarah sain dan teknologi Islam membuat Profesor Hassani memiliki reputasi yang mendunia. "Dia berperan besar dalam mengembangkan materi pengajaran tentang kontribusi saintis dan para teknolog bagi peradaban Islam," tutur dia seperti dikutip Middle East online.

Sedangkan Profesor Hassani mengaku sangat tersanjung dengan penghargaan tersebut. Dia pun merasa keberhasilannya itu bukan dihasilkan dari usaha individu, tapi merupakan sumbangan dari banyak pihak. "Betul sekali pernyataan Isaac Newton bahwa yang membuatnya terlihat lebih dibanding yang lain adalah karena dia berdiri di pundak para 'raksasa' yang menopangnya," ujar Hassani. Dia pun mengaku senang untuk mendapatkan kepercayaan dari asosiasi ilmuwan Inggris untuk terus memperdalam risetnya.

Selanjutnya dia menjelaskan bahwa periode abad ke-7 hingga abad ke-17 atau dikenal Abad Kegelapan, memberi pengecualian bagi Cina, India, dunia Arab, dan wilayah selatan Eropa. Periode ini, sambung dia, merupakan periode awal dikenalnya dunia penerbangan, teknologi rekayasa, pengembangan robot, juga dasar-dasar ilmu matematika, kimia, juga fisika. irf

While Professor Hassani was deeply honored by the award. He also feels his success was not the result of individual efforts, but the contribution of many parties. He also admitted pleased to gain the trust of the association of British scientists to continue to deepen the research.
