Liz Dialto - Should I Workout if I’m Sick?
Thursday, April 5, 2012 11:09:48 AM
Here are three easy guidelines for performing exercises when youre sick:
1. Is the cold in your mind or in your chest?
If its just in your mind, (meaning, stuffy nose, maybe slightly sinus headache but no chest over-crowding) then its still ok to help workout. Once the cold hits your chest, its time to see your physician. Pushing yourself too hard in this state could result in a serious lung infection. Its better to skip a few days of exercise and recover than over do it and get a longer term problem.
2. Whats your system saying?
Always remember that your body knows best. Often when you acquire sick, itâs your bodys way of slowing you down as you're wonât do it voluntarily. Ever notice how you get sick at the most inopportune times? Like right in the middle of a busy time at work? A significant project? A family crisis? Itâs probably because you have to rest. So tune into your entire body. If you feel up to a fitness, have some energy and giving it a go feels like a good choice-go correctly. Just stay tuned in during that workout also. No one is judging you in the event you decide half way through to telephone it quits. Likewise, sometimes you wont know and soon you give it a try-you may quite possibly feel better afterwards.
If you are attempting an exercise session, keep the intensity light to moderate.
3. But I heard exercise boosts your disease fighting capability.
Ill let a medical professional field that one. âModerate exercise wonât prolong your condition or make your symptoms worse, but it may not shorten them, either. One possible benefit of exercising with a cold: If youâre typically well-hydrated, a workout can break in place congestion, â notes Leah Mooshil Durst, MD, medical director of the Friend Family Health Center, Inc., and clinical associate at the University of Chicago. âHowever, your congestion could worsen if youre dehydrated. â
And heres an additional benefit tip for you:
This is 100% my opinion, by the way-the BEST cold remedy ever is sleep. Refer back to tip #2-itâs what your body wants. On more than one occasion Ive felt a cold coming with, went to bed early and felt way better morning.
