District 9

, , , ...

I'm dying to see District 9 - and they are actually going to show it in english at the Cinestar tomorrow! (Monday the 21st @20.00)

Games Currently Stealing My Time

, , , ...

Henry Hatsworth (Nintendo DS)

I just started playing this game and I'm loving it. It's a great mix between puzzler and jump-and-run. It's the kind of quirky mix that I expect from a Japanese software house but I was surprised to see the EA logo pop-up at the beginning. (It's especially "japanese" went he transforms into his knight suit) It's got good humour too: the hero is a monoclue wearing, bowler dotting, tea drinking stuffy old british gentleman. And despite its colourful and very "kiddy" looking cover, this is one tough game!

Astro Boy - Omega Factor (Nintendo Gameboy Advance)

A really cool action game, its Astro boy! I'm finding it really tough so far (a bit too unforgiving!) but the levels are as different and strange as the enemy robots from the manga - And hey its Astro boy, so its just so rad. You meet new characters to upgrade your "soul" (different attack meters, and your life meter) - so there's a slight difference to most side scrolling jump-and-run/action games and, although Im not that far, I think its not completely linear; I met one character the first time, and then because I died and went back, I took a different way, and it seems I'll never meet that other character actually: Awesome (thats something Id really like to see from the NEW SUPER MARIO BROS. WII.

Puzzle Quest (Xbox 360)

A wicked game. I don't know why I didnt check it out sooner. It was on sale for 50% off on Xbox Live, so that comes out to about 5€ (400microsoftpoints). It's really not that much at all. The game is wild. It's bejeweled meets classic RPG. Instead of fighting monsters with swords, you fight through the bejeweled game - gaining mana by connecting at least 3 jewels of the same colour, gaining XP by connecting 3 or more XP-stars, and you damage your opponent by connecting a minimum of 3 skulls (although i think they look more like the heads of the aliens from DISTRICT 9....) Along the way, (and this is the wild part) you get spells that allow different moves and skills during the bejeweled-style battle. Plus you can get items that make you stronger, you level-up and actually become stronger and you can even build your own castle (with dungeons and towers and stables) that will allow you to capture your enemies and learn their spells, train a mount, forge new items and further customizing your character...oh me oh my...

Prince Of Persia : Finished.

, , , ...

I finally finished the new Prince of Persia : I am blown away and a little sad. And actually I shouldn't say "finally" the game was not short, it was just right; if anything it was the end that dragged a little (but i guess that just adds to the epic nature of this reboot). In regards to the reboot it is a complete success in my mind. Ubisoft Montreal made a good decision when they thought to re-envision the Prince of Persia series, they had made the original trilogy (Sands of Time, Warrior Within and The Two Thrones) as wonderfully clever and dark as they could. This time around, its far more light-hearted, its an adventure, with great humor and real characters (Elika is one of the most welcome new additions to the game) and their interaction with eachother fits perfectly to that genre à la Indiana Jones.

When I saw the first trailer at the Games Convention in Leipzig, I was impressed with the cartoon-like graphics. The characters stood out and seemed to pop right off the screen while the backgrounds and scenery were so vast and amazing, that you actually wanted to take time and just look around. (Which by the way is how you get one or two achievements on the 360: just trying to get a good view of the landscape)

I was, however, a little worried about this whole "Elika-thing." She saves you everytime you fall, she saves you in battle...blah blah...If there is no way to die the game is going to be way to easy right? Well, its not that hard, Ill say that much, but its a welcome change to the frustrations and time wasted on Warrior Within, or worse : Two Thrones with their stupid unbeatable bosses just because you didnt find all the sand vessels (so annoying). Actually it improves the game alot, because now you can run just like the prince can, youre faster, more agile, more fluent and flexible: you are the Prince. And on the Xbox 360, the framerate is perfect so you can really jump, run, hang, swing, slide or grind down whatever you want - if you see it you can try to run to it. Gone are the annoying set ways and because you started out a little low on your jump he misses the next bar. (Sigh: finally) Also, gone are the annoying button combos (In the original trilogy-which I still love by the way-you would have to jump with one button, wall run with another combine it with something else to make it over a gap, it was a pain...Now its pretty simple, especially with Elika in tow.

Besides the great controls, great graphics, great writing and style, there was also great music. I know they are making Prince of Persia into a movie now with Jake Galalallalahagenheimerschen but, I think that this might be another great story to tell on the big screen. One can only wish, by the time that rolls around, by children will probably be playing Prince of Persia XXI only using their brainwaves and their ocular implants. Ah well.

Cheers POP. I shall see you soon again (now i just gotta finished The Two Thones on the Wii - because the Xbox version is completely unbeatable.

George Clooney Stares At Goats!

, , , ...

A great looking trailer for the movie "Men who Stare At Goats." Directed by the writer (oddly enough) of 'Good Night and Good Luck.' The cast is also amazing, especially for this kinda flick : George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey, Jeff Bridges and J.K. Simmons - they are going to get the most out of every bit of comedy this thing has to offer. Check it out!

Web Strangeness : Pet the Kitty

, , , ...

This has got to be the strangest webbanner i have seen in a long long time. I mean, you are trying to get people to click on it by either offering them something interesting, or tricking them into clicking by making some dumb but irresistable game outta it. But this is neither - its just, well, petting a kitty with a flat floating hand....and thats what makes it amazing.

G.I.JOE a real American SUCKFEST! G.I.JOE! *singing*

, , , ...

what....WHAT WHAT? Today I had to read : "G.I. Joe Blasts Competition At U.S. Box Office" - Who ARE you people?! Will you actually watch ANYTHING they put on the big screen as long as there are things blowing up?! Will you buy ANYTHING they make a commercial for?? Are you actually logging on to movie webpages to PRAISE this amazingly sucky piece of stinking garbage?

Wasn't it enough of a hint that Paramount didnt want to show critics before the release of a major summer movie?! Peter Howell of the Toronto Star writes : Anyone "unlucky or foolish enough to waste money on this wretched excuse for entertainment" will have lost two hours watching it.

Honestly, you are paying 10bucks to watch a 118min commercial based on a fabled military toy, directed and written by the guy who gave us 'classics' such as "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" and the direct -to-dvd : "The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior." And Dennis Quaid? I mean really? Who is going to see it, because theres certainly no Shia LaBeouf or something...did you people actually see the trailer? Did you actually SEE the costumes? They dont even surpise the really BAD stuff on the sci-fi channel....geez!

Ok, I can't waste much more time on this, but I want to say, I understand that geek is in, the 80s are in - I get that, they are trying to recapture and rekindle the hype and pocket a few gold bars in the meanwhile - but if you go see this you are SUPPORTING THE MAKING OF THIS CRAP! I musta had a hundred GIJOES (tanks, jeeps, motorcycles, helicopters and all) but do you remember the cartoon? NO! Because it was garbage!

This movie honestly is going for the "suckiest big summer movie of 2009" in my books - and just when I thought it couldnt get any worse after TERMINATOR SALVATION and TRANSFORMERS 2. This is a sad summer for the big ones.

sad...sad....sad.... (reviews/rants to come on TERMINATOR SALVATION and TRANSFORMERS 2)
