HALO ODST you made me so sad.

, , , ...

I finally got a chance to play though Halo ODST. And it breaks my heart to report that I was a little disappointed. It just felt like it could have been more, like it SHOULD have been more. I expected a more stealth based HALO episode - something along the lines of SPLINTER CELL meets HALO. Dang, just like that sounds super rad to me. The problem is that this Orbital Drop Shock Trooper was still pretty invincible. I mean, sure he doesn't have shields like Master Chief, but you could still take quite a beating (thats without mentioning that you're incredibly strong when it comes to running around with a freaking turret in your hands).

The graphics are cool, and dark and the changing view function is a nice touch, but you don't actually need to use it that often unfortunately. The story seems to drag, although I appreciate what they were trying to do and the music seems like a strange departure from the original trilogies soundtrack (and not necessarily a step forward - although I know some fans of the series loved the music). New Mombasa was in fact a cool setting but it felt a little like they skimped a little on the design and detail, it felt generic and average to me, and definitely not 'lived in.'

What really rubbed me the wrong way, was that there was no Master Chief appearance. I know I know, this can't happen because of the story, where they are etc etc. But thats not what I'm saying. To really get the idea of how cool and powerful our hero Master Chief really is, wouldn't it be cool if our little protagonist Rookie got saved by the big man himself and watched Master Chief completely rip through a bunch of the Covenant baddies....I dunno I was really really sure they would be smart enough to place this cameo in there, but it wasn't there, and I was sad.

If you think otherwise, please tell...change my mind, I'd be glad if you could.

Well, I guess I'll just have to wait for HALO REACH.

Most of you will have already seen this. But it's just too cool not to have seen. Kudos to the man who came up with this idea.

GANTZ: please explain.

, , , ...

I watched the last couple episodes of the anime series GANTZ today. And, as I expected, they didn't explain anything. I felt a little let down that the idea posed throughout the series weren't as mind-blowing as I expected them to be, and I'm left a little let down and a lot confused. Ok, I'll admit there is a change that I just missed something or didn't get it. So be my guest, go ahead - please explain if you've seen it (or if you can give additional information about the manga...) Come on would someone like to explain?!

One of my photos was featured on the Bokehh.com in their post about Notre Dame in Paris. Just scrolling through all the great photos on this page, I'm amazed that they wanted mine up there too (mines the one marked AltecApollyon) It was a secret favourite of mine, since I felt that Notre Dame is always photographed in the same way, and wanted to do something different and felt that I had. I guess someone else thought so as well. It's not nearly on par with the others...so anyways: I'm flattered.

Bokehh.com is a photography page trying to make a contribution to artists by highlighting their talents and introducing their works, its also meant as a platform for inspiration for others.

Termiformers and Transinators (A Rant-Review)

, , , ...

Unfortunately, so much time has passed that most people have watched these movies or watched them pass. So I am going to make this as quick as I possibly can.

First of all, Terminator Salvation (because its the one I saw first). I wouldn't have actually left my house to see this, but I was invited by a couple friends and it seemed like a fun night out (regardless of which movie we were going to see). The trailer for 'Salvation' made the film look gritty, and very Fallout 3 like (ie. end of the world, everything is rumble and destroyed...desolate) And I was liking that - but I knew there was something foul about it.

So to quickly recap why this movie completely and utterly SUCKS: this terminator film has NO time travel - something which is a key element to the other terminator films, and its what sets the terminator films apart from other sci-fi robot films (but I'll get to that in a sec). Also, aparently its not so desolate afterall, as there are hundreds of humans being rounded up - heck they are popping up everywhere in every scene! So much for nuclear holocaust. There's also these NEW terminators, that are pretty much Transformers, they are so big and even have little Terminators that spin out of them that look like motorcycles. (WHAT THE HECK?!)

The useless and boring story finally brings the characters to Skynet HQ - which looks a lot like Mordor (big tower with a light on top and all!) there's big talk about how dangerous it is, and how they aren't going to get it. But then they simply walk right on in (even typing 'DISENGAGE' to a door to open it) and don't get any resistance! Then theres a completely useless scene where Sam Worthington talks to the über-computer, but denies his programming (that was super lame, because that's where he should have become the terminator) but instead we get a weightlifter with Arnie's face digitally grafted on to it (why?!) although that last scene running from the slow digi-Arnie is about as close as we get to a Terminator movie. *sigh* what crap. Why Christian Bale ever agreed to do this movie, is far far far far beyond me.

Secondly we have Transformers : The Revenge of the Fallen. Now, to be fair, Michael Bay was complaining up and down that Terminator Salvation was stealing ideas adding practically Transformers into their movie and he's probably right - but boy did he get them back, with the introduction of a humanlike transformer that tries to seduce Sam Witwicky in his dorm room. hmmm, Terminator 3 anyone? Geez, cry me a river Bay - who do you think you are? Oh, you're the guy who spent $200 million making this movie? Oh. Apart from the not-so-hidden racism and over the top American patriotism theres still so much gunk in this movie its embarrassing!

Think about the first scene with Megan Fox, lying on the motorcycle, (there are so many more of these shots of her in this film its like watching Michael Bay's voyeur video collection. She's painting the motorcycle upside-down. What the?!?! I'm not going to list all the scenes, but also at the end, when shes running around in the sand all dressed in white, I wanted to just get up and leave. But I didnt, because I had paid 18 british pounds to see this steaming stink pile in the IMAX (which was so shaking and hard to watch it made some seriously motion sick.

The worst still has to be the 20min at the end of military garbage that we had to sit through- full of military-jargon and crap just so Mr.Bay could show off once again how tight he is with the American Army...I can't believe that Steven Spielburg put his name anywhere near this movie.

The only thing good about these movies was the computer graphics, good job ILM.

Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box! Nintendo DS

, , , ...

'Gamers' who sit in front of their PS3's or 360's and call themselves 'gamers' but completely discard the Nintendo DS as a 'kiddy console' are really missing out on some of the most original and inspiring games out at the moment.

In Level-5's first Layton-adventure : "Professor Layton and the Curious Village" - we got a fantastically memorable game, with a mixture of puzzles, history, mystery, mini-games, character and full-blown animated story! The world in which these characters find themselves was purely its own, and it took us on an adventure with great twists and surprises. So, being so taken with the first, I was naturally excited when I heard that 'the Curious Village' was simply the first act in a trilogy that was already available in Japan!

The second act is now being translated and is for sale outside of Japan : "Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box" and it looks every bit as good as the first. I'm not going to go into detail about the story, there are enough articles a google search away to read on that, but let me say that they've kept everything you loved about the first, and added changed a few things, but it feels like a natural extension of the first; graphically nothing has changed, the gameplay hasnt changed, the music hasnt changed, even the story gets underway and it's great. Immediately you feel that you're back in Layton's world.

This time around, the game does not take place in a little village, but on a train (trains seem to be all the rage lately, as they are also making an appearance in the new Nintendo DS Zelda game : Spirit Tracks) This has got to be the best idea about the game : you are still confined to a small area, surrounded by familiar faces, but it doesnt seem unnatural or contrived. It's like the difference between 'Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark' and 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.' Anyways, enough writing about this game, I gotta go play!
