HALO ODST you made me so sad.

, , , ...

I finally got a chance to play though Halo ODST. And it breaks my heart to report that I was a little disappointed. It just felt like it could have been more, like it SHOULD have been more. I expected a more stealth based HALO episode - something along the lines of SPLINTER CELL meets HALO. Dang, just like that sounds super rad to me. The problem is that this Orbital Drop Shock Trooper was still pretty invincible. I mean, sure he doesn't have shields like Master Chief, but you could still take quite a beating (thats without mentioning that you're incredibly strong when it comes to running around with a freaking turret in your hands).

The graphics are cool, and dark and the changing view function is a nice touch, but you don't actually need to use it that often unfortunately. The story seems to drag, although I appreciate what they were trying to do and the music seems like a strange departure from the original trilogies soundtrack (and not necessarily a step forward - although I know some fans of the series loved the music). New Mombasa was in fact a cool setting but it felt a little like they skimped a little on the design and detail, it felt generic and average to me, and definitely not 'lived in.'

What really rubbed me the wrong way, was that there was no Master Chief appearance. I know I know, this can't happen because of the story, where they are etc etc. But thats not what I'm saying. To really get the idea of how cool and powerful our hero Master Chief really is, wouldn't it be cool if our little protagonist Rookie got saved by the big man himself and watched Master Chief completely rip through a bunch of the Covenant baddies....I dunno I was really really sure they would be smart enough to place this cameo in there, but it wasn't there, and I was sad.

If you think otherwise, please tell...change my mind, I'd be glad if you could.

Well, I guess I'll just have to wait for HALO REACH.

Games Currently Stealing My Time

, , , ...

Henry Hatsworth (Nintendo DS)

I just started playing this game and I'm loving it. It's a great mix between puzzler and jump-and-run. It's the kind of quirky mix that I expect from a Japanese software house but I was surprised to see the EA logo pop-up at the beginning. (It's especially "japanese" went he transforms into his knight suit) It's got good humour too: the hero is a monoclue wearing, bowler dotting, tea drinking stuffy old british gentleman. And despite its colourful and very "kiddy" looking cover, this is one tough game!

Astro Boy - Omega Factor (Nintendo Gameboy Advance)

A really cool action game, its Astro boy! I'm finding it really tough so far (a bit too unforgiving!) but the levels are as different and strange as the enemy robots from the manga - And hey its Astro boy, so its just so rad. You meet new characters to upgrade your "soul" (different attack meters, and your life meter) - so there's a slight difference to most side scrolling jump-and-run/action games and, although Im not that far, I think its not completely linear; I met one character the first time, and then because I died and went back, I took a different way, and it seems I'll never meet that other character actually: Awesome (thats something Id really like to see from the NEW SUPER MARIO BROS. WII.

Puzzle Quest (Xbox 360)

A wicked game. I don't know why I didnt check it out sooner. It was on sale for 50% off on Xbox Live, so that comes out to about 5€ (400microsoftpoints). It's really not that much at all. The game is wild. It's bejeweled meets classic RPG. Instead of fighting monsters with swords, you fight through the bejeweled game - gaining mana by connecting at least 3 jewels of the same colour, gaining XP by connecting 3 or more XP-stars, and you damage your opponent by connecting a minimum of 3 skulls (although i think they look more like the heads of the aliens from DISTRICT 9....) Along the way, (and this is the wild part) you get spells that allow different moves and skills during the bejeweled-style battle. Plus you can get items that make you stronger, you level-up and actually become stronger and you can even build your own castle (with dungeons and towers and stables) that will allow you to capture your enemies and learn their spells, train a mount, forge new items and further customizing your character...oh me oh my...

Gaming-Awesomeness : Portal

, , , ...

Portal. From the makers of Half-Life. It'S already gained cult status - though lately, Ive met quite a few gamers that dont know it at all! With the influx of new gamers there seems to be the need for help when deciding what to play. There are so many games nowadays and that means that most of them are pure crap.

Not however in the case of the short yet wonderful : Portal. Its a ego-shooter puzzler game, and could very well be the beginning of its own genre. I was lucky enough to find the hard to get (in Germany) Orange Box at a used game shop. For me, it is the most memorable game that I have played in a long time. Its non-violent, it has great humour and a well told, unfolding story. It's short, yes, but its the beginning of something new, Portal 2 (already has been announced) will be much longer I am sure.

Im not going to get into what the game is about, there is a wikipedia link at the bottom that explains it all better then I can. I think you should just give it a try, if you consider yourself to be someone who loves gaming for gaming then there is little risk involved; great gameplay, well-structured, self-explanitory, full of story and humour, cool music - try to find another 5 hour game that can stand up to this one!

Also included in the amazing Orange Box edition, is a game commentary, that you can interact with while playing the game, you find little speech bubbles that you can activate to hear more about the making and testing of the game, and how it came to its final version : more 70€ games could learn something about value here.

The first Half-life changed the ego-shooting genre forever. It was a much more story based game, less of just finding exits and killing. It placed you in a role. Portal harkens those emotions that bubbled up while playing the first Half-life for the first time : "This will change things."

It seems that the gaming world is becoming more and more like the movie world; there are big budget games, that dazzle with their effects but lose out on there innovativeness, and then there are the smaller indie games(Portal, Flower, Braid) that are extremely innovative, but are at times a tad lackluster, but for a true gamer thats easily forgiven.

You can get Portal on Xbox Live for around 1000 points. It's more then worth it. Then after you're done, check out all the fan art & stuff online - Im sure you'll already be doing it.

RANT : CoD 5 & World Cup of Ice Hockey

, , , ...

Alright I'm sorry but I gotta let this out. Today I really hate living in Germany. First, everything was going good, I was playing the very last level on Call of Duty 5: World At War on veteran (which is a pain in the butt) and I was looking forward to having it behind me and getting a taste of the zombie-nazi levels - especially since I had bought the new map pack over XBL and there was a 2nd co-op map for the zombie-nazi level : "Verrükt" it was called.

After I beat the game, there was nothing.

It's bad enough that the game is ONLY being sold here in a dubbed GERMAN version - but this....this is another show of German censorship that I dont understand. The game is already rated 18, its already super realilistic and authentic when killing the other humans in the game. It's got intense scenes, its even got a warning cautioning players at the beginning. Then why does the mythical ZOMBIE level get cut from the german version?! And why are german XBLA owners paying the same price for the map-packs (or more since the Euro is worth more) then our American gaming friends?!

Unacceptable.

Secondly, as if that wasnt disappointing enough for one day. The ice hockey world cup is on at the moment, in Switzerland. Seems that in Germany, its DSF who's responsible for putting this on TV. Which is scary since they have some weird 'sports stripping' on at night and odd money-grabbing call in game-shows during the day. I mean is there REALLY nothing that they can show? Sports are happening constantly! I dont understand why they just dont show a a re-run of some of the games! or something geez, whats going on over there?! I already had a hard enough time with them showing an unimportant game between Germany and Austria on Sunday, when Canada was playing against Norway, but then yesterday - May 4th - Canada was playing against Finland. I mean this is a showdown. Today the IIHF webpage describes it as "A barnburner, a dustup, a CAN-FIN battle royale"

Battle Royale?! Are you kidding me? A game that went past overtime to shootouts and then even 14 of those!!! DSF where is your mind?! Oh yea I forgot, DSF is showing "Hattrick" their 2nd german league soccer game! DSF by the way, stands for : Deutsche Sport Fernseher (German Sport Television). I know ice hockey isnt on their priority list. I know. But even after the soccer game was over, they didnt quickly go to the hockey game, they were showing some report about some manager and some interviews that were in no way live....I dont get it. This Ice hockey world cup, its a WORLD event. I know its not the soccer world cup, but there are more teams in it from EUROPE then from anywhere else.

Not even Eurosport was showing the games.

I hate this.

A friend of mine was in New York during the Soccer world cup (I know its called Football just leave me alone) and he went to a bar to watch the game. They were watching when a guy came in and asked to have the TV turned to the GOLF game that was taking place. My German friend scoffed, but the bartender said : "Well, if anyone else comes in asking, we'll change it." They did and he did. And while the biggest sport event of the year was happening my friend was forced to watch GOLF.

I guess what Im saying is : AT LEAST IT WAS ON TV AND YOU COULD SEE IT! WHY ISNT IT ON MY TV?!

End of RANT.

Heres dessert : (albeit "PAINFUL dessert" if you are in Germany)

Wii Awesomeness : Cubello

, , , ...

I used WiiWare for the first time today and got my greedy little gaming wii-remote wielding hands on "Cubello" today. One of Nintendo's new Art Style Puzzlers. For Only 600 Wii Points and only 47 measly blocks - its a great game. Wii Points by the way will soon be the new world currency, once its taken on my Secondlife and the likes. Oil will even be traded in it

I think its a pretty universal opinion that good games are easy to learn, difficult to master. That's just what "Cubello" is. Well, I dont know exactly how hard its going to get, because so far Ive just played the first 3 levels (which are divided into "A-B-C-D-E-F") So I guess by the end of level 3 youve played 18 puzzles.

The premise is this : youve got to connect at least 4 blocks of the same colour to finally get rid of all the blocks so that only the "core" is left. You have only a certain amount of blocks to use in your "magazine" but you can get more by making the blocks disappear, so you cant just stack them up. Oh, and there's also a little slow-time mode. It is in alot of ways kinda like a 3D Tetris idea.

What is missing though, is a high score list (which so far, only exsists in the "endless" mode, but not in the normal levels) So even though you know how quickly the fastest person was, and with how few moves they solved the puzzles, you dont know WHO actually was playing. Thats something thats all-to-easy to put in, and should have been there. Tsk tsk.... Online-play would be something for Cubello 2. It would really be tense to have someone trying to solve the puzzle against you (Something to think about Nintendo), but even for now they could have added an online score board, where you could upload your scores and compare them with your friends.

A level editor is something the game design is practically begging for. But Im sure its something they wont release until the hype is all but dead around this idea, then they can use it to resurrect it once more for a few bucks.

Nintendo could get alot of Kudos by releasing a few small games (smaller than these?) for free and it would really give their online platform a boost and make them the good guys they want to be. Its a real fun game, anyone who is interested, especially in games like Dynomite, Bejeweled and such things, should take a look.
