Ubuntu @ linux were known to be immune from windows virus. There is no other way to run windows virus on ubuntu except with the help of compatibility layer like wine or crossover with root permission.

Windows virus in Ubuntu is normal if you like me, a heavy torrent downloader. But as I mentioned before, the virus cannot do anything harm to your files.

Antivirus @ Antispyware ONLY NEEDED if your are on sharing folder, on network or you run an email server. Its purpose only to stop windows virus from spreading through network (in windows pc).

It also can be use to scan your windows partition if you have dual-boot system.

Here the world's top internet browser. Microsoft dominance through Internet explorer in the browser world is more than 50%. It is because the internet explorer is the default and pre-installed in every windows OS which make it possible in gaining 1st place. For full statistic please refer here



This follow by firefox, safari, chrome and opera. Google Chrome is a new kid on the block in this browser war are gaining more popularity than the Opera. In my experience, Google Chrome has a wider interface, fast and easy to manage.

I mean by "easy to manage" because every tab in Google Chrome are run as a separate process if you see in your task manager (windows). If any one of the tab get hung, you can easily close the tab without affecting the whole browser. Google Chrome is free and can be download here.

Regards to firefox, an open source browser project. Hmmmmmm.... With the help of extensions support, its become the most have functionality and a good browser. But firefox with a lot of extensions may affect your memory usage. Sometime, your mouse cursor are not responding and feel slugish. I recommend firefox for user with 1 GB RAM and above. But in Firefox3, memory management are better than firefox2.

Opera is one of my favorite other than Firefox. It has a lot of functions like torrent client, mail client, sidebar and speeddial. It also not a memory hunger browser. Overall, opera need some tweaking to get the most out of it.

Safari... it's called by Apple to be the world fastest browser and I still don't have any chance to use it. No comment...

Overall, my choice are Firefox, Opera and Google Chrome.

Yesterday, my office PC broke down. I've try to fix it, still no chance. I've try the ACER Recovery Environment but it say the size missmatch. Actually I have a backup but it at the same hard disk on different partition.

This morning my pc drive me crazy. There's something wrong with the PC. The hard disk, I think is spinning at 25,000 rpm (I'm not sure, but the sound telling me that's it). The mouse cursor respond too slow and sluggish. Then I reboot and it fails to start the windows.

This is insane. I have a lot of files inside there like our company insurance master policy, vendor details, leasing statement, hire-purchase agreement, loan statement and some personal files. Then I think of formatting and re-installing the OS. Yes, I can but it take time as I need those files urgently.

Luckily, I have Ubuntu Live CD in my drawer. I boot the Live CD and start nautilus and fail again. The nautilus file manager can't access the backup disk and hung without any respond even though the partition already mounted.

Shit... this is really worse. Then I think of gnome-terminal.

I fire up my terminal and start navigating. First I go and check the backup folder

What I learn in this case.

• Make sure your backup software is running
  
• make sure your backup folder is exist
  
• make sure your backup files ok and defect-free
  
• possibly make a copy to another pc or over the network
