Error notifications and Opera

,

As i've mentioned in the previous post: why should i use clumsy FF or Safary instead Opera when developing for web? This time the problem isn't in strong image caching. It's about error notification...

By the way, Opera error console is far more usable for me than the one in FF (even with FireBug extension). It gives me more info to think of and point to exact place in code that triggered an error/warning.

But today's thing with AJAX dissapointed me a bit... The error is next:
[Exception... "'Permission denied to call method XMLHttpRequest.open' when calling method: [nsIDOMEventListener::handleEvent]" nsresult: "0x8057001e (NS_ERROR_XPC_JS_THREW_STRING)" location: "<unknown>" data: no]

And there weren't any alert about this exception in Opera :frown: It just blocked my attempt of cross-domain scripting... quietly...

I'm using Safari for the development of this site for two reasons: first one — I like it much more than FF and the second is — he has the same problem that Opera does — it blocks my attempts (but the error is showed).

Strong image caching for localhost

,

It's a big goal in the speed improvement and traffic reduction... But as far as I see — this works mostly on localhost — where the speed and traffic improvements aren't needed actually. 'Reload Image' doesn't work also... Why?

I love Opera. I'll be using it till the end of my days. But why do I need to use ugly FF or Safari for the web development stage? :frown:

Keyboard layout switching... Free?

, ,

As I'm going to switch to the freeware software as much as I can, I need to find some keyboard switching application — an alternative for the ParaWin XP that I'm using now. It's very handy to use such software, 0ctually, as I have 3 languages (layouts) to switch between: English, Russian and Ukrainian. So I've assigned the next shortcuts:
  • Left Alt + Shift = English
  • Left Ctrl + Shift = Russian
  • Left Alt + Ctrl = Ukrainian

But the main advantage of this app is next: I don't need to check which layout is currently active — I'm just hitting the shortcut and can be sure I have the layout I need  To be even more sure — I'm often hitting the shortcut several times 8) It's some kind of habit for me now...

And I was very dissapointed when some builds of 9.5 alpha had the same shortcut for the text direction switch — [Left Alt + Shift]! :frown: I was so happy when this feature shortcut were changed...

But the program is shareware... And I'm using it's cracked :frown: version. Does someone know any simple alternative to this program? Or it's easier to write such thing by myself? But I need more free time and more Google queries to accomplish this...

Yeah! Beta++

Finally... I'm using Opera 9.5 beta too

I've downloaded the first beta at the day of it's release and it worked great until the moment I've decided to clean up my bookmarks :frown: Then it made several fatal freezings and, finally, refused to start at all! :frown:

'Repair install' didn't help. I reinstalled it with the latest alpha and used it till this evening. By the way, the latest alpha can't synchronize my account after I've used the Beta...
I think some switcher triggered first time I used beta and 'the old way synchronizing' seem not to work for more... But now everything is ok.

And one more thing... Widgets seem not to work for now. I need to reinstall them to get them work :frown:
And the worst thing is that My Opera widget works buggy for me:

Will there be a new widget release?

Mouse Pointer and Pop-Up Notifications

,

Pop-up notifications are simple and elegant in Opera and works just great!

There are some advantages i've noticed:
  • They can detect the monitor to display on by active application window focus. If you switching between applications that have it's windows placed on different monitors - notification will also switch and continue to pop-up/down on that monitor!
  • Clicking on the pop-up is also useful: it opens the context menu for "Finished Download" notification, brings you to the RSS feed you've clicked on for the "RSS Feeds" notification and opens the incoming e-mail message for the "New e-mail" notification.
  • They shows the nice icon for the event that triggered notification (new RSS feed, new e-mail, finished transfers etc.)
  • You can close a notification at any time simply clicking on a close icon at the up right corner
  • You can turn them off by using Opera Preferences (Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Notifications)
  • Pointing the mouse cursor on the notification causes it to stop hiding until you focusing the cursor on it.

The last one is very useful but... Has some problems. It's often for me to leave the mouse cursor somewhere near the bottom right corner of the screen (where my iTunes player is). Here the problem is: when pop-up begin to rise it stumble on the cursor and stops as if I want to read the text on the pop-up. Yes! I want to but I can see only the top part of the notification! Even when I roll the cursor out the notification won't rise to it's full size... It will roll down completely in a few seconds :frown: Leaving me with a mystery...

Why not to let the pop-up to rise to the full size and then trigger mouse hovering?

Another thing... It is often that I'm taking notice on the pop-up only when it's hiding. And when I'm trying to stop it by pointing the mouse cursor it just stops... Yes, but I haven't ended to read it! Why not to show it in the full size at the mouse hovering too??
