Woohoo!!! IE8 & ACID2 — they made it!

, , ,

According to the MOLLY's blog, guys from IE team finally brought their child to pass Acid test! :yikes:  :hat:

But! :wait: I think they just want to have this "trump card" when EU Commision will be reviewing Opera's formal complaint against Microsoft Internet Explorer. We know you, Bill! And this trick won't work this time! monkey

And I think, Bill didn't even know about this Acid2 test till a Opera compliant. And he became so mad when he saw this big smiley face on the Acid page (I'm 99.9% sure he used Opera to check it ) that he walked down to the IE dev. team and kicked someone's ass very nicely...

I think this is all Opera's merit, ladies and gentleman! :sherlock:

Cool Opera smiley! \m/

I think, we should add this one to the My Opera smileys  That one is awesome one!

Month of work — and here's first beta!

, ,

Well... One month of work on the online map of my city and now it's first beta is out:
http://map.krivbass.info/

We did a great job actually... Two guys 'measured' almost every piece of our city by themselves. Every disctrict, every street, every building... And just two guys with theodolite — Yury and Igor! (their work took several years actually)

Another two guys — Andrey and me brought it all to work. Andrey made all server-side scripting and configuration and I made a very simple design, XHTML coding, CSS styling and user intercation through JavaScript (AJAX).

This was my first 'serious' web project with AJAX and DHTML.
Andrey also has his first experience in developing web applications. He's application software developer.

Now it's just regular GIS that allows you to search streets and districts and navigate through a map: zoom-in, out and move it. Well, sure... There are some small aberrations and bugs there, but they will be fixed soon  But even more functionality just haven't been added yet! Like user accounts, advanced search feature, rich user feedback, business search etc. There's no any other content now except the map itself :frown: But it'll be added asap. The main aim — the map itself.

By the way, we placed there some social advertise banners: one against AIDS and another is for donor association support. It's such a great feeling to do something beneficent, actually!!! Even if it's not so much, but... It's something you CAN do within yours $300/month salary. And I think it's good!

P.S.: We also added a small Opera banner  at the top of the site! Hoping it'll also help to spread the word about this great browser!

Opera and Opera Error Console favored in Apress's book

John Resig (the creator and lead developer of the jQuery JavaScript library) has favored Opera and it's Error Console in the "Pro JavaScript Techniques" [Apress] book.

In the chapter called "Tools For Debugging And Testing" among other browser's error consoles he wrote next:

Opera
The last error console that we’re going to look at is the one contained within the Opera browser.
Thankfully Opera put a lot of time and effort into making it quite functional and useful. In addition to all the features available in the Firefox error console, it additionally provides the following:

  • Descriptive error messages, giving you a good understanding of what the problem is.
  • Inline code snippets, showing you where the problem is in the code itself.
  • Error messages filterable by type (e.g., JavaScript, CSS, etc.).

[...] All of this together, however, provides you with an excellent error console. [...]

Opera has long taken web development seriously. With a large number of active, avid developers and specification authors on its development team, its platform has strived to serve web developers well.
