The power of vector graphics

I began to learn vector graphics recently and Adobe Illustrator particularly. And now, when I know some basics I began to look around in the search of the "illustrator guru".
The man I've found makes me feel myself like a little dirty and stupid bug at the area of vector illustration... Just take a look at that:

The whole portfolio of Yukio Miyamoto may be found here: http://www.khulsey.com/portfolio_auto.html
It's all *VECTOR* graphics!!!
BUT!
Is it the right choice? Or maybe it's just an excessiveness? Yes, vector is great, but... 3D model in that particular cases would be a better solution. IMHO. Imagine you'll need that picture at some case in another viewing angle? With the use of the 3D-model you just need to turn the model (or camera) to that angle and render again. In the case of the vector source you'll need to draw it again from scratch...

They're a lot quicker to create than polygons, the tradeoff is that they cannot be rotated in a 3-dimensional space for better positioning, and they cannot change the lighting after they've been drawn except through manual efforts.
Creating this bike in 3D with the same level of detail as the vector image would probably take days or weeks, where the vector image could probably be done in hours.

And the other thing — it's very hard to control exact sizes and proportions of details in the case of vector illustration.
