A control group of people on a wait list was tested at the same time as the meditating group. At the end of the training program, both groups were given an influenza vaccine.
The study found significant increases brain activation in the left side, a pattern known to have a positive effect occurred among the people who meditate. It also discovered much higher levels of antibodies in response to the flu vaccine in the meditation group. Also, the size of the antibody level increase to the vaccine matched the increase in the left-sided brain activation.
The researchers concluded that these findings indicated a short program in mindfulness meditation produces demonstrable effects on brain and immune function. They also suggest that meditation changes brain and immune function in positive ways and underscore the need for additional research.
