Katie Melua - Nine Million Bicycles.mp3
>> I was driving on N2 highway from Richards Bay to Durban on one Friday afternoon, then for the first time, i heard this song from East Coast Radio, the graceful rhythm immediately caught my heart. have you ever felt this way? sometimes the most beautiful song you heard is the one you unconsciously heard from some radio stations you dont even know and have absolutely no idea about the song's name? well, Nine Million Bicycles is one of these songs to me.
There are nine million bicycles in Beijing
That's a fact,
It's a thing we can't deny
Like the fact that I will love you till I die.
We are twelve billion light years from the edge,
That's a guess,
No-one can ever say it's true
But I know that I will always be with you.
I'm warmed by the fire of your love everyday
So don't call me a liar,
Just believe everything that I say
There are six BILLION people in the world
More or less
and it makes me feel quite small
But you're the one I love the most of all
[INTERLUDE]
We're high on the wire
With the world in our sight
And I'll never tire,
Of the love that you give me every night
There are nine million bicycles in Beijing
That's a Fact,
it's a thing we can't deny
Like the fact that I will love you till I die
And there are nine million bicycles in Beijing
And you know that I will love you till I die!

when you really think carefully about the lyric, it actully doesn't make any sense, what "9 million bicycles" have anything to do with "love you till i die"? i think this might be the difference between ordinary people and song writers, they can put two completely inconnected things together to write a song and make you fall for it. what's your opinion?
take care.

I think the bicycles represent the country and the love is the patriotism until she dies?
Sometimes writer use objects to stand in the place for the real meaning just to make you ponder more deeper like you have
It's a touch of the magic of writing.
If you see my new post I placed a woman in white half naked to represent the change in the persons heart. I didn't place a heart which would have been more visual however, this girl half dressed I felt described losing ones heart more than the photo of a heart.. Also.. half naked could mean half the person she use to be..
It's a play on words from a writers perspective .
I like the way you dig deep.
Yours
Eve

This is a love song and has nothing to do with patriotism. She compares her love for her partner to all these things, quite beautiful infact.

I had just dropped my baby girl off at the airport to fly to China for the 2nd time and I was going through radio stations to find one that caught my mood when I happened on this song! The melody caught my mood and then I listened to the words. I couldn't believe bicycles were mentioned and beijing.
Thanks for posting this so I can hear it again.

Hi folks,
maybe we all misunderstood sth. in the song?
Maybe it's more like the chinese way to tell a lie that another person wants to hear (especially when sb. is in love and asks for some response that the other doesn't want to give). So let's have a closer look at the lyrics:
"There are nine million bicycles in Beijing"
Yes, there are a lot, I was there, I saw them, but really 9 million? Indeed? Not 8.5 million, 11.2 million, 10.33 million?
Who ever counted?
The authorities don't know how many people actually LIVE in Beijing, so how should sb. know how many bicycles...?
At least we have to take into consideration that this statement CAN be true, but the probability that it's wrong is very high...
"That's a fact,"
No, it's not! It's just an expectation, an appraised value, a guess!
"It's a thing we can't deny"
Oh, in this case we HAVE TO deny it!
"Like the fact that I will love you till I die."
... so we must cast doubt on this, too? This is the only working conclusion, I think. So what now?
But by the way:
I like this song, too. It sounds good and the other verses are great to describe her love.
But to take 9 million bicycles in BJ as a fact like the fact that sb. loves sb. until he/she/they die and therefor "Just believe everything that I say" is giddily or - and here's the danger: tricky.
Could it be that she DOES know that she will NOT love him until she dies, but she tells him so because she does know that he likes to hear it?
And for preventing to be called a liar later she shows him by a simile how vague her statement actually is.
So he COULD see it, if he wants, but who wants to find the trap in such a situation?
And later she can tell him: "I told you this!"
You see: My mistake is that I read/listen too carefully all the time
But nice song, indeed.

In the early hours this morning I had a phone call telling me he has passed away..... I always listen to ABC Radio in Perth Australia and have never heard this song played on this station.
When may clock radio went off at 6:50am this morning, after a disturbed night, the song was introduced and played.
It brought a tear to my eye, I understood it as a message from him telling me he was now ok and not to worry.
This song will always be close to my heart.
