Home Schooling Or Public School

, ,

One of the things that bother me a lot is my kids education. I often think about the pros and cons of home schooling versus public schools.

I actually am tear apart with the 2 options. On one hand, home schooling is more adaptable, and the child can learn at his own pace. On the other hand, at public school, kids interact with other kids their age, and learning those social skills is very important as well.

So, what to choose? It's a big dilemma, I tell you that. I don't know what to choose, maybe this article will help me sort my thoughts.

We home schooled our daughter (now 37) and helped home school her son(now 17 and finishing first year in college). This issue of kids interacting with kids their own age and learning social skills is what the school systems put out to keep people from home schooling their children. I don't know where you live, and laws differ in different states (most states have a site on home schooling to tell you what is required). My daughter relates very well to her peers and others, and so does my grandson. He aced his GED and scored in the top 1.5% of his college entrance exam. At first we used the on line charter school, but they were so far behind his abilities that after about 6 months we quit that and I designed his own school curriculum according to what was required by the school system in our county. I used college level books because the high school level books were too simplistic and in some areas were simply wrong. The grammar and spelling in these so called text books were atrocious. Some of the examples used in the math text books used in the school system had wrong answers to simple problems. There are many, many places on line where you can get remedial lessons FREE, if you just look for them, in the case that your child needs some remedial work in some subject. We made each session interesting, one on one sessions. \

Of course, my prep time was enormous, but I was retired and could do this. And, most important of all, I loved him.

Home schooling is not for everyone, and certainly not for every parent, and quite often the first year is a disaster. Ours certainly was. But the key to success is to learn from your mistakes, and persist. No teacher in any public school system will care about your child, or for your child, like you will. Email me if you want to discuss this further: sgf468@gmail.com. Put in the subject line "homeschooling" so it won't end up on my spam folder.
