People are resistant to backing up their computers. They know that a hard drive crash can be a disaster, if no data backup is available, but unless doing backups can be made very convenient, they tend to neglect this important precaution. Software, such as photo organizers, may sometimes malfunction and destroy files. Users may inadvertently do the same. If the user can access backup copies of these files, the problem is much less severe.

For computer files, a backup program is analogous to the photocopy machine, and there are many places to put backups that are analogous to the manila folder. In many cases, a USB memory stick is an ideal place to put a backup.
Though the computer uses a memory stick as if it was a small hard drive, in reality it consists of pure electronics with no moving parts. Thus it is small and very rugged. Today's memory sticks go up to 64 billion bytes, tomorrow they will be bigger. The memory stick doesn't need to be as big as the hard drive, as in most cases we will only be backing up some of its contents.
The USB memory stick works like most USB devices. Plug it in and it is ready to use. It needs to be kept dry, but that is about it. (Don't set it on fire.)
The simplest backup procedure is to backup every thing that we want to protect every time we run the backup. If this takes too long, an alternative is to do occasional full backups. In between, do incremental backups that pickup all of the new files and the ones modified since the last backup. How often to backup? It depends on how frequently you have new or changed files, there is no set answer.
Insurance is usually only valuable when something goes wrong. Then, it is very valuable. Backups work like that. If something goes wrong with your computer, a backup copy of your key data on a USB memory stick becomes your insurance policy.
