How Can You Connect Yoga and Carpal Tunnel

Can you imagine being a writer, secretary, purchaser or anyone else that uses a computer constantly and find out you have carpal tunnel. If the severity alters your work life, it can have a domino effect on everything from finances to extracurricular activities.

If you made it here you've probably heard people exclaiming that yoga exercises are the best way to combat carpal tunnel. While this is true, there was a point in time where this was basically another form of meditation. However, in recent years it's helped wrist pain, muscular paralysis, sleeping orders and many other issues.

In the past though (1998 to be exact), an empirical study was performed to observe the effects of yoga exercises. The goal was to figure out if they truly helped carpal tunnel, or it was just a facade in the industry.

The Two Groups

It was originally thought that yoga was considered to be one of those alternative medicine techniques that had sketchy benefits. This is why it was so important for case study professionals to test the effectiveness of yoga and figure out if it was truly helpful.

What they did was start looking for enough people who had developed some stage of carpal tunnel. Group A was primarily made up of people who would experience their treatment like normal. They would receive splints, inserts and keep them on for a specific amount of time. Then of course adding in the medicine that was prescribed would be used as well.

Group B found themselves able to try something new. The only thing they would be losing is time, and the thought of going through the same motions with minimal results. This was the group that utilized 2 yoga sessions each week for 8 weeks, which would focus in stretching the muscles and joints.

For two months straight there was constant note taking and observations among the doctors. What they were looking for was concrete evidence that yoga would actually help you overcome pain and reduce the discomfort that was the epitome of dealing with carpal tunnel everyday.

What They Found

At the end of the two month period, they found that those who used yoga as their medical treatment felt much better. They had better grips, relieved more of the discomfort and found themselves simply feeling better throughout the day.

This basically put the stamp of approval on anyone that wanted to use yoga as a treatment for carpal tunnel. Although it was only an alternative technique at the time, it has become a leading contributor to help heal and prevent this disorder. In our society, it's a big difference to have a medically approved technique.

The Implications

Since the original test was completed in the late 1990s, any further research could help solve many of the limitations that were substantiated back then. However, the point is there were no signs of conditions getting worse when the case study was taking place.

The next time you are looking for a way to truly prevent and heal carpal tunnel, it's important to know that yoga is an irrefutable solution.
