Thailand and the Thai Transgender Community

,

The transgender community in Thailand enjoys the sort of freedom that is the envy of all transgender communities around the world. Here trans people can move around at public places without being gazed at by anybody. Transgenderism is a part of our culture.

But that is not true of other transgender communities world wide. Tell me how the trans people in your country are treated. I know that Argentina is most liberal on such issue. There you are a man or a woman in strict accordance with how you feel inside your heart. If you as a woman feel that you are a man, you can just apply for a national identity card saying that you are male -- and vice versa if a man feels that he is a woman.

But in Muslim countries and even in advanced Western countries, transgender people easily fall victims to hate crimes of various sorts, which range from sexual harassment, disenfranchisement on the job market to outright physical attacks and murder.

It will be centuries before the transgender people in many countries enjoy the sort of freedom that is taken for granted here in Thailand.

I know what u say of the world outside of Thailand is true, Mimi.. I am a western girl and know my own little part of Europe best and if things legally are getting better for the transgendered, they remain socially the most persecuted and discriminated against by large swathes of British society and Trans are many times more likely to meet their end violently than any biological man or woman.. irrespective of sexuality.

Very smart comments. Trans people...particularly MtF women...are often treated as mere sex toys in the West... how very sad !
