Colours of the Wind

In that delightful song of Disney, 'Colours of the Wind', Pocahontas sings in praise of the fact that in every tree and even every rock, there is life and spirit. How can that be true ?But any primary school pupil can tell you that life is a cycle in which one thing depends on another for survival. If there is no soil, there can be no minerals with which we build houses and manufacture daily necessities. If there are no trees, we have no oxygen to breathe. Yes everything in nature is here for a purpose. It has life because it is in different ways life-giving.
There are different types of trees, rocks and soil, as well as different types of living creatures on land and at sea. Diversity is the No. 1 law of nature. In diversity all things in nature find a common thread, which is that basic survival depends on our being very different from each other.
It is so simple a thing -- our need to accept differences in life. Yet down through the ages -- and up to the present --women...being physically and emotionally so different from men... are not given the rights and freedom taken for granted by men. Gay and trans people are regarded as perverts...social reformers treated as dissidents or counter-revolutionaries...racial and religious differences are not treated as extensions of natural diversities but as benchmarks of antagonism and hatred.
In different cultures, God is expressed in different ways and in different words but there is just one God. One God...one humanity...one living world...all these have been like this since time immemorial. How stupid are those who think that they can ever change that ?
