Life And Other Things

just tryin' to get by

PAT'S CHRISTMAS PARTY

Lu, Mary and I spent most of the time in Pat’s “earth room”. It was comfortable, intimate and it was the designated cigarette smoking room…
It wasn’t that we weren’t comfortable with Pat’s other guests we just kind of went there for a smoke and never left until much later and even then we ended up back in that room.
We had a girl’s night in a way, Pat would come in for a little while and disappear again to her other guests, her daughter poked her head in once, laughing at our subject matter but then telling a story of her own.
But there was serious talk also sometimes and all three of us said things we might not say to just anyone.
Mary is the baby; she is in her late 20’s. Lu and I are in our fifties and have more life experience but Mary is pretty smart.
Nobody has had a smooth ride through life; we’ve all had our mountains, valleys and tidal waves.
Sometimes it’s nice to know that some parts of our journey are similar to other’s.
The food was great and there was a lot of it. None of “the boys” except for Bomba showed up, he’s Pat’s boyfriend.
The conflict was that it was also Andre & Mary’s anniversary for Café Andre. Seven years. And also, I believe, the same date Andre came to America from Poland back in the early 70’s.
Pat didn’t know or she’d have planned her party for another day. I don’t think it made a difference; there weren’t many people at either place.
I left at 7 and went to Andre’s to see my cousin and brother who were supposed to go to the party but never made it. They just got back yesterday from a cruise and I hadn’t seen them in over a week.
It had been snowing most of the day but lightly, now it was snowing really hard and visibility was only about 10 feet, which had a disorienting effect, kind of surreal. I know that road like the back of my hand. I’ve traveled it for 54 years and yet at times I had to think about just where I was.
I think it was the snow that kept people from coming out at all.
There were only a handful of us at Andre’s but the fire was going, the pool was being played and the music was loud but not too loud. It was warm and comfortable but then it’s almost a second home to me anyway.
The snow looked nice through the picture window especially with it being so toasty inside.
But I really didn’t want to stay as long as I did.
I waited though because the thought of driving all the way to Claremont in that blinding snow was daunting. Slick roads are bad enough when you can see what’s ahead of you.
But finally it lessened and I left and it probably only took me about 10 minutes longer to get home than it usually does.
Now the snow has stopped and the sky is much clearer, the quarter moon was hanging outside my window a while ago and reflecting off the snow in my yard.
And as tired as I am I don’t want to go to bed yet.

It always is I'm pretty good at it now. When I got my first one that actually went on line I never thought I'd figure some of it out...but I did, eventually LOL.
