MY app list

Finally got an Android phone (running Gingerbread), so decided to make a list of apps based on *my* needs as it might slightly differ from the usual lists,... maybe not.

First batch; most essential
Opera Mobile, web browser
imo instant messenger, messenger
Yahoo! Mail, email client
ConnectBot, SSH client
Hacker's Keyboard, full keyboard
Android System Info, for info and managing stuff

Second batch; alternatives and handy apps
Twitter, official Twitter app, alternative for Peep that comes with phone
Skype, for the long distance calls
Stop Skype, essential when need to totally shut down Skype as there's no other way to do it
Astro, file manager
PDF Viewer, as there was no default PDF reader on phone
Google Translate, surprised this one didn't come with phone too
Notepad, for random notes
Photobucket Mobile, handy for Photobucket user that I am, for quick private photo uploads or backup
RunKeeper, for providing info to my stalkers
ServeStream, HTTP streaming media player, for private, unlisted streams

Third batch; apps that didn't quite serve it's purpose
Trillian, messenger (been using desktop version for many many years, but had quite some trouble connecting, decided to stick with imo)
AndChat, IRC client (just too heavy on my phone)

All listed apps are free and can be found by those exact names on Android Market.

I accept alternative suggestions in comments and if reason why I should try it will be good enough, I might give it a go.
Also, I'll be adding to the list if I come across something useful.

GemCraft Labyrinth

GemCraft, probably the best tower defense game ever created, finally got new sequel: GemCraft Labyrinth.

I've just started playing previous part: GemCraft Chapter 0 again after couple years and I still think Chapter 0 is the best of GemCraft games.

Labyrinth introduces us with new field map where, instead of traveling, a puzzle map is opening with paths connecting.
Game modes as known from before are gone; in Labyrinth you select difficulties with each giving part to a score multiplier. So you can choose swarm waves only with extra armory. This way you only have one high score per field.

Fields have changed as well. There is usually more than one path available or is very opened. But you get to control the way monsters will go by building walls, as much as field allows you to.
There are couple new things you can build beside walls: amplifier (doesn't shoot but gives gems on nearby towers extra power) and you can build your own lightning and bolt shrine.
Shrines need to recharge before dropping in another gem and don't have limited charges.
Gem's shapes changed, but powers remain the same. You can now change gem's target priority (hold Shift and click on gem).
The part I like a lot is that you get to shoot at monsters buildings and beacons to destroy them, or can still throw gems at them. And the blue Mana Shard that gives you extra mana while you shoot at it.
Instead of Epic boss levels, there are Crafting Pylon levels. You need to set gems to shoot at pylon to charge it up, while still defending your Magic Orb from invading monsters.

The game remains the eye and ear candy; with (what sounds like) raining and occasional reminding that monsters are still out there (screen shaking, lightnings). Apparition flies over the field now and then (demolishing gives you 3 skill points) and I even had a case when something summoned the monsters and caused waves of angry monsters.

Unfortunately there is premium edition of this game (payable) which gives lots of extra. Free edition is playable, but can't do challenges that some fields have as you can't play some "mode" (eg: "Last at least 100 waves" while you can't play unlimited waves (Endurance mode)). Also can't develop some skills.

After playing GemCraft Chapter 0, GemCraft Labyrinth's gameplay didn't feel quite right. Spent more hours playing it to get used to it and I still think that Chapter 0 is better than Labyrinth. I guess mostly because of limits to non-premium edition. I would like to get higher score on fields, level up, develop different skills, but can't if I can't choose higher score multiplier.

Apparition flying over the field, walls blocking paths, gem shooting extra mana from shards, Magic Orb (blue ball) being protected.

Music of 2010

As the year is coming to the end, the time is right to announce the album of the year 2010.

Album that made most impact on me in this year was released on 16. March, but I didn't get my hands on it until months later. I did quite soon caught up with listening for missed months as it instantly stole my heart and I ended up listening it all the time; even waking up in the middle of the night with one of the 11 songs stuck in my head. I knew right there and then that this is going to be THE album of the year.

It's album of cover songs and just a first part of project with three more albums to be released.
Of course, I am talking about 99 Songs of Revolution by Streetlight Manifesto, volume 1.
A very clever album cover for 99 Songs of revolution vol. 1 representing songs and (original) artists.

To wrap music of 2010 up I should add discovering steampunk band Abney Park which ended up as being the Most played artist of the year. They too had a notable release in October; album titled The End of Days.

Halfway out of the dark

Abigail's Song

When you're alone, silence is all you know.
When you're alone, silence is all you know.
When you're alone, silence is all you see,
When you're alone, silent is all you'll be.
Give me your heart, come to me.
When you are here, music is all around.
When you are near, music is all around.
Open your eyes, don't make a sound.
Meet in the shadow, meet in the shadow.
Meet in the light of your bright shadow.
Meet in the shadow, meet in the shadow.
Meet in the light of your bright shadow.

Sung by Abigail Pettigrew (played by Katherine Jenkins) in 2010 Doctor Who Christmas special: A Christmas Carol.

Pa rum pum pum pum

Let this years Christmas song be a classical tune Little drummer boy, as performed by Abney Park.
Song can be found on Abney Park's 2009 album Dark Christmas.

Come they told me, pa rum pum pum pum
A new born King to see, pa rum pum pum pum
Our finest gifts we bring, pa rum pum pum pum
To lay before the King, pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,

So to honor Him, pa rum pum pum pum,
When we come.

Little Baby, pa rum pum pum pum
I am a poor boy too, pa rum pum pum pum
I have no gift to bring, pa rum pum pum pum
That's fit to give the King, pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,

Shall I play for you, pa rum pum pum pum,
On my drum?

Mary nodded, pa rum pum pum pum
The ox and lamb kept time, pa rum pum pum pum
I played my drum for Him, pa rum pum pum pum
I played my best for Him, pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,

Then He smiled at me, pa rum pum pum pum
Me and my drum.
