I saw this video somewhere earlier today. I was just blown away.

Don'tcha just love it when people are all ready to find fault and end up cheering for those with whom they would have?

Inspiring.

Absolutely. I totally  that chick, and I hope she gets kissed by someone she thinks is awesome (because part of the story was she said she's 47 and never been kissed).

She's the odds on favorite (all of a sudden), and Simon is supposedly already negotiating her record deal. She quit singing to take care of her sick mum, and says she's gobsmacked by the attention.

I have to say, she won the crowd in about a tenth of a second.

She just had to sing.

It's a cultural difference, I think. There's no way, even with that amazing voice and quirky attitude, that this chick would get anywhere here. I think, anyway. People are always surprising me, but the Brits seem to appreciate this kind of thing.

But I'm an anglophile, and biased

Perhaps you're right. It seems the voice will ring through. On the other hand, she'd never front a rock band (at 47, maybe she doesn't want to - I wouldn't).

I bet there's a bright future for her - some one has to sing in commercials and on movie soundtracks, and all sorts of places. I hope she gets to fulfill her dream - she stands as hope for everyone, I think.

Well, Mlynnjohnson, I'm from the US, and I believe she *would* go somewhere here in the US. After all, most of our most revered singers have been rather frumpy old ladies. Ella Fitzgerald, Kate Smith, Mahalia Jackson, were all considered national treasures and were drug out for nearly every national celebration in order to sing.

Also, on live stage, one need not be beautiful, as on the 2 screen sizes. As someone already mentioned, there are always voiceovers and other film work for a really good singer too.

I think she'll sell a few recordings as herself, and then be an occasional guest singer for special events. Perhaps commercials and voiceovers too. And that is a longer career than most pop singers ever have. Even someone who has been disgraced, Sandi Patty, is drug out on the 4th of July and baseball openings. She is still earning a living singer her "ministry" in churches throughout the country. (You should catch it, she has an absolutely charming Downs Syndrome girl who signs the words to all her songs - it is poetry). I am amazed that the Christians, though, have been so unforgiving. If she was a reformed drug addict, they'd be having special celebrations. Such fickle people we are.

And I hope she does go far and do well.

Matthew 19. April 2009, 01:52

Most of those frumpy singers started out young and cute, though.

When I saw her, I thought 'she's going to get commercial and file work.' I tell you though, we do love an underdog - not that she has an underdog's voice. Her personality is great, too.
